It's just hard for me to reconcile Amazon warehouses constantly being in the news for having 50% turnover (they set a standard rate using their barcode scanners such that 50% of employees will be fired within a month or so) with exhausting shifts and people working there for years complaining about it their ankle bones getting worn out ...

with the idea that Americans won't also want to work a job that is more physically exhausting but pays a lot more than working at Amazon ($13/hr).

farm workers could (and should) be paid a wage commensurate to their labor and physical toll it takes

they won't be, because there's a huge surplus of immigrants, transients, and illegals who will do the work for less than citizens will ask for. even if some farms hire only citizens and pay them fair wages and pass on the difference in price increases on the crops, they will be outbid by other farms that don't and thusly have cheaper crops

because of trump/brexit, this labor pool abruptly dried up, and we are headed towards a big food crisis this autumn due to lack of people to handle the coming harvest, because the farming industry isn't responding quickly enough to the shift in labor. even if they suddenly start paying $20 or $25/hour or whatever it takes to attract citizens, these people will be inexperienced and inefficient for at least a couple growing seasons. either way food prices are going to go up and that's going to be something the general population will immediately notice

in conclusion capitalism is bad and nationalism is bad

a few reasons I can think of: warehouses are much more accessible to people living in urban areas than farmland is, they're not constantly in the sun, the work is more-or-less year-round (with spikes around christmas)

i'm sure that's not the whole story though
