In Kiwami, is there no way to cash out casino chips for plates? I have a boatload of chips from using the blackjack cheat device. Should I just buy the weapons and armor and use the rest on staminan sparks?

Horse armour was a watershed gaming moment. I remember buying a DVD with the Oblivion DLC packs (Knights of the Nine!!!) and being absolutely gobsmacked at how shite most of them were. Up until that point, any additional content you’d get for games would be massive expansion packs (Opposing Force, Throne of Baahl, Morrowind: Tribunal)

Then Bethesda comes along and charges a few bucks for an item that does literally nothing.

I don’t know now if people can fully appreciate how ridiculous this was at the time but Bethesda got mercilessly mocked in all the PC magazines.

Simpler times!

Nah don't bother. This is anime high school just like the other Persona games, except this time, it's 2017 anime high school -- safe spaces, no platforming, trigger warnings, white privilege, etc.

Actually, there isn't really any of that in there, but it reeks of middle-aged developers interpreting the modern teenager/young adult attitude towards symbols of authority, and it feels drat oppressive to play unless you fall squarely into that niche.

When I started to get a feel for the combat in Origins I thought it felt pretty old-school, actually. No real combos, not a trace of Arkham elements, just timing and blocking and watching enemy attack patterns/animations. It sounds like Dark Souls (though I've never played) but that kind of combat goes way back. Like, Ocarina of Time way back.

It’s not just the shoulder buttons, it’s stuff like the parry command and timing. The general rhythm feels Souls-y too. It’s hard to explain. It’s definitely more influenced by souls than anything else in the series. The first two games actually were all about hitting the attack button at the right time in a combo and stance changing to use counter moves.

The current offerings look hideous and play like poo poo. Give me one good one to play for a while and then the genre can go away forever.

I never did play 1 or 2, so I can't comment on those. I hopped on board with Persona 3, and remember enjoying 3 and 4. I just felt like they piled on the "headstrong to a fault, opinionated teenager" thing way too hard in 5. I liked the earlier themes of self-acceptance and community effort from 3 and 4, because those were kids trying to be the best people they could as they went through their own individual coming of age. Persona 5's cast was just too abrasive all the drat time. I didn't like a single one of them. It felt as if they abandoned just about any trait that could make a teenager a good person, and doubled down on everything that makes people shake their fist and mutter "god damned kids these days..."

As an aside, I got old between the release of 4 and 5, so I attribute at least some of my distaste and failure to relate to the cast to that. But really, this is just a hot take. I know Persona 5 was well-lauded when it came out, and clearly it was a case of "it's not you, it's me." If someone says "I hate anime high school games," that's probably enough information, to me, to recommend a hard pass on Persona 5 (or even Persona games in general.) I mean, the UI and music was pretty solid...

I wonder if since they were going with a thief theme that P5 would have some small amount of moral ambiguity in it but nope, stealing people's hearts is completely justified (as long as they don't do that thing that makes vegetables) and the adult system of justice is worthless, except for a few adults who betray it to help them.

Persona 5 is a very specific articulation of a vigilante revenge fantasy, like Death Wish except even more extravagant, because it is based on the reality that most people in power who commit great evil are never punished for it. All the people who are currently in power right now who ruin people's lives on a daily basis will most likely die surrounded by their loved ones having lived long lives of extreme comfort because of their exploited wealth and power. At best maybe a few will be punished in their advanced years and granted leniency because the worst of their crimes are far enough in the past or they are old and frail, having successfully evaded punishment for decades. Persona 5 runs with the idea that simply killing these people and granting them nonexistence is a blessing compared to the ruined lives their victims will have to endure for years, and the true revenge is forcing these people to actually have a psychological reckoning that never occurs in reality because the guilty will never, ever, feel guilt, let alone be publicly found so

Also, I wouldn't assert that I'm a normal person with regard to videogame demographics...but I've talked to some real normal rear end people with wives and kids in the last 6 months who've played and loved P5, and I'd say broadly speaking the game's theme resonates pretty strongly right now along class lines. I think the idea that goons sometimes perpetuate about it being merely a high school dating simulator are pretty off base.
