The shotgun in Atomic Heart is also pretty good. Upgradeable to be able to fire elemental bits by screwing a dingus to the side of it, and it fits the retro Soviet aesthetic.

Re: Shotguns. I'm quite fond of the SPAS-12 in Far Cry 6 which has all the cartoony physics that the rest of the game (with the exception of the massive impaling crossbow) lacks. Why yes, I DO want basic cannon fodder troopers to go cartwheeling away when I bodyshot them!

the auto-shotgun with exploding shells in Turok 1 is a joy. Turok 2's shotguns are decent but don't match up--fortunately its armory excels elsewhere.

Killzone Shadow Fall has a great shotgun... which is an anomly for the series. the games pride themselves on having big meaty sounding guns but every iteration of the shotgun either sucks or is just kind of aenemic. except Shadow Fall's. This shotgun will send enemies pinwheeling through the air and in a game that sometimes takes itself top seriously it is a hilarious way to off space nazis

Was it 2 that introduced the cerebral bore? 4 player gamecube turok was a staple of highschool sleepovers with my friend group, as was 4player timesplitters 2 on the xbox :unsmith:

Yeah turok 2. The bore was so good, I'm amazed they let that one through to kids. I spent many hours with big head mode on just going crazy.

Turok rage wars was such a good multiplayer game

Perfect dark was still the goat for us back then though. A lot of the matches would be 8 meat sims (the lowest difficulty possible) vs humans as a team

then Turok Evolution created the Swarm Bore which was functionally the same weapon... but instead of just the head it sent separate drills into your arms and legs. it proved to me as a kid that sometimes less is more. the excess blood and guts looked worse than the OG gun and made it less fun to use.

It did get an M rating (or BBFC 18 across the pond) but nobody seemed to mind selling it to 11-year-olds such as myself at the time.

The Japanese version, by the way, is called Violence Killer: TUROK NEW GENERATION. Joshua Fireseed is the new generation Turok, and he kills violence.

edit: oh, apparently it got a BBFC 15 instead of 18

The ESRB isn't law so they can and should be able to sell an M rated game to whoever wants it

maybe they actually check ids now though

At about the halfway point of Dead Island 2, it gets bored with being a zombie game and just goes "gently caress it, here's some super powers". They also make it a lot easier to get ahold of guns, but why would I bother when I can dropkick dudes so hard they burst into flames?

South Park on the N64 was fun with friends in multiplayer, if just for their own Cerebral Bore knockoff; The Cow Launcher. A weapon that'd launch a live cow onto someone's head rear end-first, locked on like the original Bore, leaving the victim to wander blind seeing the cow's insides as it sunk down onto them.

The Mind Control Device was fun too, just for making you stop and sing helplessly.

I spent a year working at Gamestop during the PS360 generation, and selling M-rated games to minors without their parent's permission was the one thing they took more seriously than anything else. If you did that poo poo, you were out the door.

...it kind of made me sad how many parents, after being explained to the content of games like GTA and such, would just answer with 'they see worse than that on tv, give them the game' and let their eight year old walk out the door with GTA4 or whatever.

In Baldur's Gate 3's third act there is an NPC who has a bunch of dialogue where he wants to be an adventurer and has a line for each class you can be in game. However if he were to die and you use a talk to the dead spell on his corpse, he isn't restricted to the 5 question limit it normally has. The narrator will note "Even though the spell is supposed to wane, the spirit doesn't seem to want to stop"

It was either Noober or Neeber that gave you reputation and a bunch of xp if you let them talk themselves tired.

The last 5-10 convos they started was just a "How about now?" question being repeated, so you'd think it was just gonna keep doing that.

Fortunately you could fast forward it a bit by spamming conversations with the guy first and then let him do the last 5 conversations to run him tired.

Imagine being an esl child, like 11, you might understand what "head drill" means but you have no idea what a "cerebral bore" is? And then you use the weapon and instantly know what both words mean. That's super shotgun and bfg levels of iconic.
