Who's stopping on a whim when they drive someplace?

That's a good point and frequently one that small business owners get dead wrong when they moan about protected bike paths taking out the 2 parking spots in front of their store.

There's this perception that a far larger chunk of their business is coming from people parking in those spots than is actually happening in reality.

But really, who the hell in city cores is like "I'm just going to go out for a drive and I'll stop at any cool store I see."

Maybe that would have been a thing back in the 50's or something when there was only a fraction of the traffic on the same sized roads, but today that would be a recipe for massive frustration and burning your time and resources.

If I need to drive to buy something it's a tactical mission. Check traffic, preplan approach and parking, secure target item and gently caress off immediately home, annoyed that I had to drive in the first place.

You know when I do stop into interesting stores on a whim? When I'm a pedestrian walking down traffic calmed streets with wide and pleasant sidewalks.

Make your street somewhere people want to explore and hang out on and not just get through as quickly as possible, and watch the money roll in.

Say Watt?

The thing about parking in front of stores is that if it's not paid parking often the people parking there are the employees or owners :ssh:

Langford submits bid for Amazon headquarters

The city submitted its bid for HQ2 believing it has the "resources, political will and business climate to ensure" the firm is successful

The City of Langford is the second B.C. city to announce its bid to become home to online retail giant Amazon’s next headquarters.

The southern Vancouver Island city submitted its bid for “Amazon HQ2” with the belief that it has the “resources, political will and business climate to ensure” the firm is successful, said Dale Gann, chair of the city’s bid committee for the project, in a news release.

“The bid identified a number of serviced, development ready areas within and around the City of Langford that meet the needs of Amazon,” Gann said.

“The bid also highlighted the capacity for Langford’s neighbourhoods, including Westhills and Bear Mountain, to continue to grow and accommodate the influx of anticipated workers arriving over multiple years.”

Langford has a population of 35,000 after growing by 21 per cent between 2011 and 2016, the fastest increase in the Capital District Region.

The deadline to submit a bid was Thursday. Vancouver, in a joint bid with Surrey, backed by the provincial government, is also vying to become home to Amazon’s second headquarters, which would join its first headquarters in Seattle, Wash.

The B.C. government said it would kick in $50,000 to help Metro Vancouver cities prepare their bids.

Amazon is promising up to 50,000 jobs with an average annual salary of $125,000 over the next 15 years, plus additional investment by the online retailer to the tune of $6 billion.

In preparing its bid, Gann said Langford worked with the B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology, the city’s economic development committee, the Sooke Economic Development Commission, the Malahat Nation, as well as local businesses and other partners.

Gann listed the city’s competitive wages, affordable and high-quality housing, recreational opportunities and post-secondary school and tech sector as reasons for Amazon to come.

The city “always will be open for business,” Mayor Stewart Young said. “Langford will continue to expedite the permitting process and minimize red tape to ensure that all businesses, including Amazon, can grow and thrive.”

The city did not release full details of its bid package as it heads off to Amazon’s internal review process.

More than 100 North American cities have shown interest in the project, according to a report by CNBC.

Close to a dozen Canadian cities are in the running, including Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Halifax, Winnipeg and four cities in Ontario, including Hamilton, London, Toronto and Ottawa.

'No pets allowed': B.C. group rallies for legislative change for renters

Finding a home to rent in many parts of British Columbia can be tough at the best of times and, throw a pet into the mix, can become nearly impossible.

Pets OK BC, a grassroots advocacy group, is trying to remove what it says are unfair restrictions on pet owners.

Under current laws, landlords can turn away a renter if they own pets as well as restrict the number, size and type of pet.

"It's just unacceptable," said co-founder and organizer of the group Eliot Galan. "It's gotten to the point where having a pet at home doesn't afford you the ability to have a home unless you are wealthy or are willing to part with your pet."

Pets OK BC launched a paper petition calling on the provincial government to amend no pet policies in the Residential Tenancy Act, the Strata Property Act and Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act.

There is already a provision in the acts giving tenants the right to use their living spaces undisturbed — contained in so-called quiet enjoyment clauses — so there is no need for a specific pet clause, Galan told CBC host of The Early Edition Rick Cluff.

The group have collected over 10,000 signatures so far and is planning to present it to the legislature as a private member's bill.

Eliot Galan, co-founder of Pets OK BC, lived in a van with his dog in 2015 after being unable to find affordable, pet-friendly housing. (Eliot Galan)

'A slippery slope'

Galan knows first-hand the struggle to find a home with a pet, he said. In 2015, he and his dog were evicted from an apartment after a renovation in a so-called renoviction. After that, he could not find an affordable place that accepted animals.

A renoviction is when a landlord renovates a rental unit with the goal of evicting tenants. Often, landlords do the renovations in order to charge higher rent.

"I ended up living in my van, down by the river," Galan said. "It became very difficult to hold down a steady job and it was a slippery slope that led to a deep pit to climb out of."

The choice for pet-owners often comes down to giving up a pet or giving up a place to live, Galan said.

"We have people going homeless all over the province because of this," he said. "They've done nothing wrong, many of them have impeccable references, steady jobs and no one will rent to them."

Galan said the group has received support from both pet owners and many landlords. A big part of the issue, he said, is changing people's perspectives about pets and rentals.

"There are landlords that have had bad experiences, I'm not going to try to deny that," he said. "Pets are not the problem, people are the problem. When you single out pets as what's causing this, you're missing the mark."

Pets OK BC is holding a rally for affordable pet-friendly housing at the Legislative Assembly in Victoria on Sunday, Oct. 22 starting at 12:30 p.m.

So this goes back around 5-6 months, but remember how some of this thread's posters thought the BC NDP's opposition to Uber was going to cost them the election? It very much sounds like the Liberals think the exact opposite - that their pro-ride sharing position cost them the election.

Complete bunk from people who have no idea what they are talking about.

The taxi drivers/dispatchers and associated friends and family were the only ones voting based on that poo poo.

The general public overwhelmingly wants ride sharing (not necessarily Uber), because taxi drivers are total loving rude assholes with a dumbass monopoly.

One honked at me while I was biking up a steep hill with a ton of cargo on 10th Ave where due to parked cars the street is one car width wide.

Motherfucker literally wanted me to pull off the road, kill momentum and stop so he could get to the red light ahead 10 seconds faster.

That was the day my final shred of sympathy for taxi drivers died.

Go drive an Uber for less than minimum wage, assholes. And so help me god if I get a ride with you and you drive like a dick towards anyone, ped, bike or car, I'ma rate your rear end down hard.
