our apartment management has scheduled pest control for mice that involves everyone cleaning out the cabinets and moving all of the furniture away from the walls. will our rats ever be able to have floor time again? i don't know how they treat apartments like this, especially since they allow pets, so animals like dogs (our downstairs neighbors have a dog for example) and cats would be on the ground fairly regularly. also children i guess

the first time the old pest control came in, they just placed a couple of pellets in hard-to-reach spots we never let the rats ago anyway. i don't know what they would be spraying or using, if it breaks down over time, etc. and i'm so stressed out about this.

i really believe the problem is that the building is old as gently caress and there's holes and gaps and plenty of places for the mice to get in at, and they need to loving do preventative maintenance, but whatever!!

Yeah, when you own rats you've pretty much gotta accept that sometimes your clothes are going to be ruined. No avoiding it, really.

They should, but to get an actual timeline you'd really need to ask the exterminators themselves. I once had my place fumigated (ants, not mice), and had to keep my rats out for ~72 hours afterward (iirc).

I remember once when I was cleaning the cage one of my assholes escaped and found his way into the laundry basket.
I didn't notice that he was gone until he was done making holes in literally every piece of clothing that was in there.

That hoodie I bought as a sort of socialising tool but I’ve since given it over to them, they sleep in it on top of the cage at night.

My lads still don’t want to escape. Give them any opportunity and they’ll either freeze in terror, or panic and run home.

didn't get a chance to ask them (I was out with the rats, my husband stayed here to keep an eye on it all) but they sprayed some type of liquid poison into some known mouse holes, the one in the bedroom is normally covered by furniture they can't get under. we're not sure what they did in the living room which is where we've been having floor time lately. but we have no idea how long it stays toxic for. it's hard to find information online about it all. :(

at least they complimented our cleaning/prep abilities :smug:

My rats have finally lost interest in chewing cables. Phew!

One of them is getting a little more inquisitive about the outside world, though, I let him onto the window sill of a wide open window as a bit of a test, and he leaned out a little far for my liking. So that'll stay off limits.

At the rate my renovations are going it'll be months before I can give them any floor time. Will they remain happy with the desk time they have now as they get older?

Falstaff

Nope, not at all. Rats need floor time to be happy.

You could try setting up a play area by partitioning it off with cardboard walls or the like.

E: Something like this.

Won't be super convenient when it's up, but maybe try a cheap kids pop up tent? Fold it flat when you aren't around and throw a rug and some toys in when they need their runaround time.

My current plan is to head to the local fabric shop and see what I can get on the cheap. I should have enough cardboard boxes around to form the fence. Then I just have to clear out one of the rooms currently used for temporary storage, the stuff can stay set up there until I get around to finishing the decoration in it.

Has anyone seen RAT FILM? I have very mixed feelings about it. It brings up some very good points about poverty in Baltimore but obviously I feel rather uneasy about its treatment of rats.

It's been a fair while since I watched it, so my memory's not great, but there's definitely a fair portion of the documentary showing how people in the city go about killing rats, rendered in pretty explicit detail.

Speaking of rat documentaries.
Here's the only good one I managed to ever find, that's about lab rats being released into the wild and observed, that's full of cute ratters and has a smooth-voiced British gentleman speaking informatively about them.

Part of this thread's title is actually originated from this documentary.

I love rats as pets but if you ever want to appreciate their danger as an actual pestilence just read about the ecology of colonial Australia. It's basically just centuries of "people roll up, rats destroy an entire island ecosystem in the span of months, repeat"

There was a loud crash from my office last night and I went in to find my (computer) mouse on the floor, and all 4 rats still in the cage looking innocent.

So either they've got very long arms and fancied some destruction or one of them's climbed down from the top of the cage (where they have free range) during the night, and then climbed back up.

I say we give 'em DC! Can't be worse than what's already living there plus rats have been proven to have empathy and care for others! We can even have an orange one.

One of my rats took a tumble off the top of the cage yesterday, 5ft onto the floor. He seemed OK once I coaxed him out from under my PC with baby food, just a bit shaken up I think, but I'm keeping an eye to make sure he's not masking an injury. I didn't get any particular squeaky yelps after some poking and prodding of limbs so, here's hoping.

Rats are pretty good at dealing with clumsy falls, in my experience at least.
Definitely keep an eye no them but if there's no apparent injury then I wouldn't worry too much.

Rats are basically built like fuzzy beanbag chairs with whiskers.

I think women are intimidated by me because I have mean cartoon eyebrows.
The only time we had a problem with a fall was when our Trudy cracked her jaw on the coffee table on the way down. We thought she had just chipped one of her teeth, but it turned out the break was below the skin and it abscessed. :gonk:

Fortunately that was a rare freak accident and you’ll probably be just fine. Our other rats suffered worse falls with less trouble.

Phew.

He was behaving in ways that made me feel OK with it, like if you've got a broken leg you don't choose to stand on your hind legs to sniff a water bottle. Glad to hear they're resilient.

And maybe he'll be a bit more careful next time.
