Office Pig posted:Godspeed friend, god knows you'll need it. Medical is a tough sell since it has a lot of moving parts, but at worst we're laying the groundwork for the 2019 session. Decriminalization, on the other hand, has a pretty strong chance of passing this session and would mean 50+ thousand Texans per year getting a $250 ticket instead of a criminal record. EDIT: among medical issues, they jacked up the price for a CBD license from a few ten-thousands to 1.5 mil, then under protest lowered it to $750k or whatever. Then (since DPS is somehow in charge of MMJ) they tried to require that every CBD dispensary have a 24hr off-duty armed cop guarding that precious CBD the junkies all covet. But I think that fell away when they pointed out that the people who grow it aren't guarding it 24/7 and freaking FedEx is delivering it without armed guard somehow. They've been doing everything they can for years to shut them down. One year they got a list of unofficial showcases online and called in complaints about every single venue to the city's police to try and get them shut down. Interactive is the only part of the official festival that actually matters anymore. (And frankly, SXSW music has always been kind of mediocre. Like, this is the festival whose big discoveries were Hanson and Norah Jones.) Pretty much every big artists that plays at SXSW actually plays at an unofficial showcase. It doesn't help that SXSW treats artists like poo poo. (Hey! Jump through all these hoops for us and we'll give you a 1:30 am "showcase" at a venue that's just a pizza place with a PA system for the week of SXSW. Oh, and we aren't paying you!)

Austinite, been going to festivals I hate since 2002. ACL and SXSW are different experiences. ACL's a giant field and susceptible to weather. It used to be in September and was outright dangerous, but it's been better the last few years in October. Like said above, ACL gets better bands; if you stay past 6pm you're guaranteed a good show from someone you've heard of. You're trapped inside the festival, subject to lovely festival food and beer in plastic cups at terrible prices. SXSW turns all of downtown into a Choose Your Own Adventure. If you spring for a music wristband, you can seek out free poo poo like swag, food and booze. The bands are awful but the experience is seeing weird poo poo from Finland and Japan. There's a .0001% you get to party with Kanye. Locals who have lived here awhile spurn those who buy wristbands and, god forbid, badges. So many bands get screwed by the organization into lovely venues at lovely times and go off the grid. An entire economy has sprung up involving free shows and shows unaffiliated with SXSW. There are probably more free shows than official ones by now. Ask for drink prices before you buy. That $8 can of Lone Star will be $2 at the bar across the street not participating in the festival. There are also liquor stores downtown if you wanna feel shady as you walk around and get the Experience.
