I'm just not sure what NJPW gets out of the partnership with AEW is equitable with what AEW seems to gain. I wouldn't call AEW a bad partner, but I would be incredibly skeptical if I were in the NJPW office (which I am, I grab lunch for President Ace)

Yeah, you still see it sometimes in professional sports, but many wrestling fans are still in full pre-Flood vs. Kuhn mode where athletes have no agency/free-agency and should be stuck wherever they are so long as the owners (acting on behalf of The Fans, I guess?) decide they should perform elsewhere. It doesn't help that wrestling had a solid two decades of that being the de facto reality with WWE's monopoly on North American Wrestling, versus anyone under 60 having grown up with free agency as a reality in MLB/NBA/NFL/NHL/etc.

And He produces match ratings that are considered to be important by some groups of fans. Hence people who either dislike the wrestling he likes or more usually like wrestling they've been told he hates consider him to be the voice of everything they hate.

One of the things that always comes up about the star ratings is people being unreasonably upset that Angle vs. HBK (and it's always that match in particular) "only" got 4.75 stars from Dave. I mean, yeah, I think it should've been a 5, but Dave didn't give any 5s out for nearly a decade, so a 4.75 in the 2000s was effectively a 5 anyway.

The Dave stuff is so funny because if you actually read/listen to him he's extremely generous to WWE and their match ratings. If Dave is biased towards anything it's ladder matches. Every MITB match seems to get an automatic 4+ no matter how tired the formula is
