Don't draft a RB in the first mostly means the top of the first, nobody really cares what you do at pick 25 or whatever.

That said, there's next to no workhorse backs in the league at all anymore, almost everyone platoons, and the history of 1st rounders kinda sucks!

'21 - 24 - Najee Harris - seems fine, and way too early, but definitely doesn't look to be solving the Steelers' offensive issues
'21 - 25 - Travis Etienne - injured
'20 - 32 - Clyde Edwards-Helaire - unimpressive
'19 - 24 - Josh Jacobs - fine, trailed off last year, injured this year.
'18 - 2 - Saquon Barkley - Hasn't done much but be injured since his rookie year.
'18 - 27 - Rashaad Penny - lmao
'18 - 31 - Sony Michel - A perfectly fine platoon back who... lol, oh right, first round pick.
'17 - 4 - Leonard Fournette - A perfectly fine platoon back who... oh my god he went 4th overall and shitheaded his way out of Jacksonville.
'17 - 8 - Christian McCaffrey - All pro in his 3rd year! injured his 4th, injured so far his 5th.
'16 - 4 - Ezekiel Elliott - The prototypical workhorse back who is... currently two games into averaging a middling 4 yards a carry and underperforming a random other back they got playing half the snaps he is.
'15 - 10 - Todd Gurley - 2 x All pro his 3rd and 4th years and.... he's gone.
'15 - 15 - Melvin Gordon - A half dozen years of solid production.

TFF required posting: You'd be much better off drafting an oline that any ol' shmuck can run for 4.5 YPC behind.

A lot of that is supported by 'big data' too. https://theathletic.com/1555085/2020/03/02/how-big-data-bowl-winners-used-machine-learning-to-better-understand-the-game/ The buried lede in this article is that the winners created an algorithm that would take in the position of the oline, the defense, and the speed and direction of the running back at the moment of the handoff and predict how many yards would be gained or lost on the play. And then extrapolating whether the identity of the rusher matters once this data is known - ie do 'good' running backs gain more than the expected yards or not.

Well it turns out that, by and large, they don't. I'm sure there's always going to be a Trent Richardson or an Adrian Peterson, and the pre-handoff movement of the runningback is also still important - they still need vision and awareness so that they can see the blocking in front of them (Trent Richardson has shown us what happens when they don't).

Here's some more reading on the process for coming up with their method:

I mean the question is if he can stay healthy, the tools are all there and to be honest he has really worked on his run support and his body over the last two years. Just can't stay healthy.

What's weird about this one, in particular, to me is that it's not unusual for a CB to take a little bit to develop and even on a first round contract he's still cost-controlled

Now obviously the Jaguars see him in practice more than I do so they might already know for sure he's a bustaroo but even so, seems too early to give up on a CB for a TE and a third

Yeah Kyle Fuller took so long to develop they didn't even pick up that player option on his rookie contract then had to give him a big salary. Giving up this early is nuts

Yeah Chiefs played Mike Hughes who the Vikings gave up on and DeAndre Baker who the Giants gave up on yesterday and they both had huge plays. And one disastrous PI.

but the point is corners can take a while to realize their potential.

Goodell getting increasingly drunk was funny. Also all the pets and silly children in the houses were great, like Belichick’s dog and the insanity in Vrabel’s house, Kingsburg and McVay living in porn mansions, etc.
