Shadowgate posted:That's really the Nexus 10? It looks like poo poo. The screen - at least based on the rumored specs of 2560 x 1600, ought to be lovely but yeah the chassis looks kind of terrible, even if I use my imagination to compensate for the poor quality of the photos The curved (plastic?) sides and back don't seem to match the black bezel very well. The black navigation bar looks really empty and awkward. The amount of screen real-estate dedicated to 3 buttons seems a bit excessive, and maybe it's just me but now it really looks likes blown-up phone apps/interface. Maybe they'll have some customization options to make it less plain.

That thing better cost like $200 for being such an ugly piece of poo poo. If it's even close to the cost of an iPad, forget it. At least the Nexus 7 looks pretty slick and is priced really well.

Yeah, really hoping that is an elaborate fake. I'm sure anyone would love the screen but that is a really bad design. It does look pretty Samsung though, almost like the Note 10.1. Probably going to hold off and see what the rumored Asus tablet is like unless it's a different device they unveil in a few days. Front facing speakers also seem like a no-brainer for tablets. Definitely a plus there. poxin fucked around with this message at 19:09 on Oct 26, 2012 |

I'm SERIOUSLY in the minority here but... I like it. Well, at least I like the back. That brushed metal "NEXUS" logo is sexy as gently caress. The rest? No. I'll probably just get a Nexus 7 and pretend it's got a metal back with a plastic part on top because ASUS sucks at using metal.

Aesthetic complaints aside, which i think are overblown, it's nice to have 2 front facing speakers on a tablet, rather than 1 in the rear.

I don't mind that it's LeapFrog-esque or whatever, my only gripe is about the location of the navigation buttons. It looks interesting. I was totally on board with getting the N7 32GB, but I might be looking at this now.

The amount of screen real-estate dedicated to 3 buttons seems a bit excessive, and maybe it's just me but now it really looks likes blown-up phone apps/interface. Maybe they'll have some customization options to make it less plain. I doubt it. It seems to be a direct response to the usability flaw with the old Honeycomb style where people would accidentally touch the system buttons in full screen apps. It got to the point where the suggestion given to drawing app developers who asked for a way to disable to system bar (since they are affected worst) in Google's weekly livestreamed developer Q&A's was to lock the orientation and render the UI upside down. Besides that there's an argument you could make for consistency across form factors (it certainly hasn't hurt the market leader). Can't be completely sure without holding it, but even in the center the nav buttons should be within range of the arc of both thumbs when holding the tablet in a landscape grip. I don't have any problems thumb hitting the 3rd and 4th icon in the 6 icon iPad dock which are in the relative same position (though I don't know my place on the tiny girl hands/man hands continuum to put this in context). So in essence all thats changing is that instead of 2 sweet spots (bottom left region for nav buttons, bottom right region for notifications/quick settings) you get 4 (bottom left region for back, bottom right region for Recents, Top left and top right region for notifications/quick settings). The only real losers are those who have muscle memory for the old Honeycomb way who'll need some time to adjust.

I love OLED displays, so if that leak is generally accurate and the 10" S-AMOLED 2560x1600 spec is correct it's going to be really appealing. Hadn't heard anything until now about work on an OLED screen of that size and resolution, so I'm kinda doubtful on that front. It's more likely an IPS or PLS display, which is still good, just much less tempting for me. e: The back is probably metal since they put a radio window in the chassis. Samsung used a similar windowed chassis on the Galaxy Tab 7.7 (then killed it by pricing above iPads and selling only through Verizon in the USA, also Honeycomb blah).

I'm in two minds about it - it will probably arrive here about the same time as the Windows 8 Pro tablets, and at a price that probably won't offer much value. It certainly doesn't look like it should be attracting a premium price though, maybe $400 USD at most.

Well with their awful paper quality manual maybe they'll shoot for the lower end of the $300-$400 range? The fire 8.9" is $300, albeit with a lesser screen/processor and ads. The Fire has a better looking body, I'd say. If the Nexus 10 lands $350 I would not be surprised that it can grab quite a few sales just from the competitive pricing.

This thing is the same res as my U3011. Impressive for sure. The bump from 149 ppi (x800) to 224 (x1200) in that size panel is noticeable, I wonder if the bump from 224 to 298 (x1600) would be? Or from an ipad at 264 to 298.

BeastOfExmoor posted:Trip report from my first business trip with my N7. I bought it primarily to keep me entertained on long flights and in the airports as well as times I'm eating out that I'm waiting for my meal. I ended up using it even more than I imagined and my laptop often spent any non-work hours in my bag. I was very curious about battery life, but on the way home I watched a 2+ hour movie and only drained it to 85% which means cross-country flights should be completely doable. I'm really happy I purchased it and continue to be puzzled when people (Apple, Tech Blogs) refer to it as a "compromise device." I had my first business trip with my Nexus 7 a couple of weeks ago and I am taking another one this week. My experience was pretty much the same as what you are describing. The only "compromise" I had with it was the performance bug that I discused earlier regarding the file system having less than 3GB of space free, but that has been fixed in the most resent update.
