Probably through Johnny Rodz, who trained him. And he was basically done by 2003, but he'd periodically lace 'em up for house shows and special events. Regarding the actual statement he made, Taz has been around long enough that he probably considers the whole publicly asking flippantly like that to be disrespectful, which is a bit silly. But at least he said it instead of just burying the guy on his show.
