It did nothing for normal playback speed  I'm always amazed at the number of regularly occurring tape artifacts that we just accepted. Colored bars, random lines and static...it was just part of the experience.

I've got a 6-head Sony deck that's capable of all the nice trick playback functions and freeze-frame without 1/3 of the frame jittering around(also can play in reverse at full speed or slow speed). Plus I have an old Sears 4-head deck that had SP, LP, SLP, and EP record speeds on it. I don't think anything recorded in SLP speed was guaranteed to play right on any other machine, though. Anything made after about 1998 is just SP/EP.
