It's a shame they never translated Kenzan, probably the most interesting Yakuza game imho.

Though watching the LP I understand because Western media would've flipped their poo poo with Haruka's job.

They distribute stuff and maybe add u's to the necessary words and change the date format and that about it.

Didn't stop Ghostlight completely breaking a game that way but eh.

In 6 if you get in a fight in front of a convenience store or something then when you're done, it seems they won't serve you. I couldn't immediately tell how to get the effect to go away (even walking a couple blocks away and coming back didn't do it) so I had to go to a different one. I guess it's possibly realistic but annoying.

My copy of Yakuza 6 is arriving on Friday apparently. I've hardly been paying attention to all the promo stuff so I guess it'll be a good surprise.

Based on the story, setting and the improvements to the fighting system, I think 6 is going to be the best Yakuza game yet.

That said, it has mandatory motion control mini games where it constantly misreads your inputs? What is this, 2007?

the yakuza series is characterized by the devs sticking in everything they can think of. terrible motion controls that no one likes are par for the course.

That the baby rocking? I couldn't do the horizontal one until I tried short, rapid movements - shaking rather than rocking, keeping the controller straight.

They definitely seem to be laying on the revelations thick this time around! Really enjoying Beat Takeshi's performance, hope he keeps popping up.

For me it keeps doing the horizontal one when I am trying trying do any of the others. But the point is that to me waggling was video game cancer and I was glad that it seemed to have finally ended a few years ago, but now I see it again out of the blue in one of my favorite game series.

I get you. I think it's the old "annoy the player to make them like a character" wheeze. If it makes you feel better I've yet to see it again and I'm about 12 hours in now. If nothing else it's a good source of purple experience.

I've never been this poor at the beginning of one of these games. For the last two hours of playing I have had 60 yen, that's not enough to buy a boiled egg. Enemies don't seem to drop anything at all and there are no sub stories around that look like they're going to result in pay anytime soon.

Edit: when you finish a fight there's no more scene where the guys admit they were wrong and give you stuff; their dead unconscious bodies just fade away Final Fight style,

Edit again: I even got an ability that is supposed to increase money I get from random encounters, but it is still literally zero every time. I wonder if it's a bug in the game or something?

It was the same for me. I got a lot more money in Kamurocho. The money gaining skill seems to add 10% to all money collected per level. I maxed it right away and hit the jackpot at one point, had 75k in one fight. Went from skint to 200k in my pocket in about half an hour in Kamurocho after spending half the time in Hiroshima only being able to buy miso soup and getting annoyed at not being healed overnight.

6 also seems to have no buyable/storable weapons and no crafting system. They've never done that well in the main line games in the first place anyway so I don't feel like it's any kind of loss.

ntan1
Apr 29, 2009

it dips mostly when fights are over/when the game cheats in order to not have loading screens. Otherwise, good performance.

This game is really shaping up to be one of the better ones. I really love what they are doing with bringing back many many past characters in sub plots.

I tried it once after running into that guy. It goes on for a while too! If I'd had my way I'd have swapped the chat window and the inset pic of Kiryu doing the hunt-and-peck typing size-wise but that's the tradeoff for having DMM bankroll the thing I guess!

The music in the Rizap challenge result sequences creeps me out too. It's like a Yello record played backwards.

I just got a trophy for jumping off the roof of a five story building. Kiryu was uninjured of course.

You can move much more freely in 6. It's not Assassin's Creed or anything but it feels much less like a standard adventure game where arbitrary, seemingly easily surmountable obstacles are always blocking your way.

Man, chapters 6-11 happened in such a quick blur. At the beginning of Onomichi I was like yo, I'm gonna wager a guess here and a random kid person accidentally had sex and got pregnant and I was right. After six games, you get really good at predicting Ryu ga Gotoku plots.

Yeah, the game bit is the best of the series by some distance and there are plenty of individually cool scenes, but the overarching plot, loving hell.

edit: Completed after 29 hours. Normally I dive straight into premium adventure and go for Amon, but this time I think I'll leave it for a while.

I just got my copy of the game and played for a couple hours and so far they've introduced a gazillion plot threads so hopefully this isn't like a Y5 situation where it feels like all the sudden someone at the end was like "poo poo this is way over budget" and hamfistedly wrapped everything up.

Oh, they definitely ran out of money. No casino, no arena, no pachinko, bowling, shogi, pool, UFO catchers, weapons... the entire northern street and Champion-gai in Kamurocho are "under construction" for the whole game. It feels like they have to make another game simply because they made so much new stuff with the new animation systems and the seamless battles/buildings and so on - it makes no sense to revamp so much stuff just for one game and then just toss it out with the job maybe two thirds done. I'm sure they'll work it out as the bit where you play it is my favourite in the series and now they can just build Kamurocho up again. They could probably get a game out fairly cheap if they get over their addiction to scanning famous people's faces and licensing 80s cheesemeisters' greatest hits albums (I didn't mind Kyosuke Himuro, but Tatsuro Yamashita, loving hell).
