Alan Wake is another game that's way better on easy, as the combat is incredibly repetitive.

Difficulty is such an inconsistent thing, even within the same franchise: Wolf:TNO - my first run through the game was done on Hard and it felt like a fair, enjoyable challenge that put up enough resistance to feel satisfying but not so much to be frustrating (except for specifically the big guys with the flak cannon shotguns, they can eat my entire rear end) Wolf:TNC - my first (and current) run is on Normal, I'm about a third of the way in, and I'm wondering at what point I get to turn from a busted-rear end puppet into a real live boy 'cause this poo poo ain't cutting it

Having 50 health for the first half of the game makes sense story-wise, but it's a bizarre gameplay decision.

Old shooters do have some of the best higher difficulties. Often they had greater number of enemies who were also more lethal. That can be a fun challenge if it's not all hitscan. Plenty of other games just add tedium with their difficulty. Vastly increased hit points so combat takes forever or encouraging tedious tactics/prep. Most RPGs the difficulty slider is just "how much time do you want to spend screwing around with consumables and buffs" slider

To be fair the real hard mode back then was convincing your parents why they should let you play Duke Nukem 3D even though you were 12 and it had an 18 rating VVV even stranger, I was allowed to play Duke3D (18 rating) but not Doom (15 rating), I never understood why. Fortunately I got a copy of Doom from someone at school Convex fucked around with this message at 01:22 on Jan 26, 2019 |

This was like...5th or 6th grade. It was all downhill from there. I've been in a rapidly decaying moral orbit ever since.

Doom and Doom 2 are much better games (especially with custom content) but you have to understand just how novel Duke 3D was when it came out. I remember when a friend showed me the shareware episode and it blew my mind; it felt like anything was possible and we spent like 10 minutes trying to get a pipe bomb to land in a toilet bowl. Looking at the game now you would see immediately the toilet is just a sprite and it's obviously impossible to do something like that, but at the time...

Man what is UP with shooters and lovely sound design!!! Latest update of Ion Maiden changed the reload sfx for the smg and it's just horrible. It sounds like something you'd buy for 1$ off of freesound that some dude recorded in his bedroom with his webcam mic. It doesn't feel good to hear and doesn't seem to match what you'd expect to hear from reloading the smg at all. UGH. Sound design is important! You gotta hear these sounds THOUSANDS of times over the course of a playthrough they better be sweet as gently caress! I love Half-Life 2 but it had this problem so bad. I don't understand how Kelly Bailey could have made such a good series of slammers for the soundtrack and then have such godawful weapon sfx. Thank gently caress for MMod.
