Was getting the birds all ready for bed, took the water bowls out of their cages to clean and refill, and when I came back Ohtori was waiting by the door in an aggressive/angry pose, with a pellet held in his beak. When I opened the door to put the bowl in he made angry noises at me, and dunked his pellet before I'd even the bowl in the holder. He was so mad he couldn't soak his pellet. :3:

Also, the other day-when I was taking all my breakfast supplies through rooms using both hands, I gave Ohtori a Cheerio and put him on my arm. He instantly ran down it and dunked the Cheerio in my glass of kvass before I could do anything about it.

He's also recently taken to eating Inko's Harrison's pellets as a treat, even though they're the tiny fine size and he likes to hold his food-so when ordering Inko's supply, we ordered some coarse size pellets for 'Tori too. Once he's finished the rest of his Nutribird (which is going to take a loooooong time), he'll be on Harrison's instead. Can't have Inko looking better than him, after all.

Sigh. We moved a couple of months ago and now Hannah has learned to bark like a nearby dog that must stay outside during the day. He's been doing it all day off and on. It's funny but it took me by surprise today because it came out of nowhere. I swear he practices stuff for us while we're at work during the day.

Paws up!

So in December Zomo and I are going to make the big transition into Big Adult World and will be moving into a new house that we will (hopefully) stay in for....ever, roughly. And I'm wanting to make a nice space for the birds to hang out so we can stop having to let them perch on a day cage that's way too small for three birds to coexist happily. What do you guys think would be the best? Should I just buy a big play stand? Or maybe try to construct something out of wood... If anyone has any nice big play stands that are affordable (lawl.) I would appreciate hearing about them!

You guys always have the best recommendations, worked great for cages and harnesses, let's get three for three :D

I really gotta recommend cutting down a big branch of a tree (that you've checked is not poisonous), giving it a good scrub, and sticking it in a Christmas tree stand. My birdies spend all their time on that and you can hang toys and treats anywhere on it. If you're not up for a whole tree in your house, you can do a smaller table-top version using smaller pieces. Birds love to chew on wood and it's really cute to see them in their tree in the window from the outside of the house.

Iro still thinks my hands are literally Hitler unless I'm wearing gloves. I've tried switching the gloves while she's looking, slooooowly taking them off in front of her like it's some kind of bizarre hand porno, and tried having gloves half on to no effect. As soon as hands are there they are Satan Babykiller Supremes and as soon as gloves are on they are Headrub Machines.

Ohtori earlier spent a lot of time perched on the spray bottle chewing on the nozzle, it kept him quiet and in one spot, and he wasn't able to bite bits off, so I didn't discourage him from it. Turns out he was figuring out how it worked, followed by meticulously unscrewing it until it came off. I turned around in time to see it come off in his beak, and him instantly flying off into the distance with it.

Staryberry posted:

And how dare you do that to him, right? Does he get mad or anything at you when you do that, and what does it look like?

Staryberry
Oct 16, 2009
He never really displays anger at us (or if he does, we don't know how to recognize it). Usually it's the more simple emotional journey:

"I want that wine."
"Now there is an obstacle I have to get around to get it"
"I nearly got to it, but now there is another obstacle!"
"Maybe if I fly away and then fly back... dang it! It happened again!"
"Ooh shiny thing!"

When he doesn't like an object, the feathers on the back of his neck puff out, he stands real tall, and he makes low grunting noises that sound like "MERK. MERK." Objects that deserve these threats include one of my belts, my cell phone, the wipes we use to clean up his poop, the tube of chapstick I offered him as a play toy this morning, etc.

I'll try and get you a video or photo of him being threatening.

I'm not sure what your definition of affordable this, but my parents gave us this for a christmas present 2 or 3 years ago:

http://www.amazon.com/Tree-Stand-with-Base-Medium/dp/B003C1057M/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0HEE7R6KKDG46E6MQDTE

It has held up very well so far, and is big enough for my cockatiel and GCC to hang out away from each other since Nugget doesn't like Ozzy. :sigh:

Edit: The dish isn't really big enough to put food in, plus it is so high up that any dropped food will end up all over your house.

MY LIFE FOR YOU!
Ugh, speaking of birds and trying to get food they can't have, I was making toast with Nutella on it the other day, with Simon trying to get to it the entire time. I go and sit down, with Simon on his playpen. Simon then screams "the birdy come here!" as he jumps from his perch and flies like he is going to land on my shoulder, as he tends to do, but at the last minute he just pulls his wings in and just drops directly on top of the toast, sending him and the piece of toast that is now adhered to his belly onto my stomach. Needless to say I made sure he didn't eat any and he got a second bath that day since he was pretty much covered in Nutella.

By the way, does anyone else have issues with their bird and them getting suddenly aggressive about certain things? I discovered the other day that Simon hates pill bottles. I went to grab some Motrin the other day and as soon as the pills rattled in the bottle, Simon screamed in horror, flew to me and bit my thumb that was holding the bottle hard enough to draw blood. This is probably the third time he has tried to attack me when I was getting pills from a bottle.

As far as aggressiveness toward random objects, well, it sounds like you have a functioning bird. I think we all have lists of things we do out of sight/reach of our birds (right?) Zippy's hate list follows:
Hairbrushes
Eggs (whole and fried)
Paper towels
Spray bottles
Loose socks
Putting away boots
Laundry chores in general

Any of those objects or activities make her see red enough that I have received some pretty good bites for not paying attention to where she is before I start whatever I'm doing.

I have also discovered that with the exception of me, Simon doesn't like people with beards. We have had two guests come over that had beards and he flew over to them and tried to bite at their lips, which caused him to spend the rest of the visit in his cage. Any other guest though, and he is very happy and friendly. And he is perfectly fine with my beard.

No really.
Thank you.
The budgies don't really care about most things in our house, but my foam roller and hula hoops are budgie devouring monsters. It's mighty useful when they've gotten upstairs, and are being little assholes that refuse to step up and fly around for hours, rather than go back to the room where all their food and toys are. All I have to do is pick up the foam roller and ~whoosh~ nothing but displaced air left. I discovered it one day when I gave up chasing them and decided to roll out my IT band while I waited them out.

Only thing they hate that actually makes sense is the Roomba. It's loud and eats all the food they were leaving on the floor for later.

Keats and Petula are both deathly afraid of the garbage bin when I bring it over on cage cleaning days, but they're perfectly fine with the noisy vacuum cleaner.

Also Keats often plants himself millimeters away from my face and naps, but god forbid if he ever catches me mid yawn as then it's time to viciously attack my mouth. Even if he's playing on my lap, if I start to yawn he'll dart up my chest to attack my lips.

I just don't understand bird brains sometimes.

Neither of my birds "hate" any particular items. Alexis is terrified of the vacuum cleaner and of any pans in the kitchen. Actually she seems pretty scared of any kitchen items in general which isn't a bad thing, she won't ever go into the kitchen on her own.

Auri just doesn't want people to touch her, but she never shows any aggression toward anything, and doesn't exhibit any particular fear either. She's real drat chill. Actually, she's even started to allow me to touch her head without whining or dodging too much.

Speaking of which, I've been taking her outside for longer and longer periods of time whenever it is nice out and she seems to really enjoy it. She also holds onto my shoulder nice and firmly. I'm taking her on her first long walk with some friends through a park on Saturday to see how she does.

Goldy is being Mr. Bitey Butt. He teases to come out, then runs to the back of his cage or clambers down the the bottom of it in the hopes of luring us in to be bitten. For the most part he isn't too bad to me, but he's been a little bastard to my husband. Ahh, the joys of spring.

Boo hates remotes, texting, hair brushes, and the nets to the aquariums. I've decided that the remote issue is just a part of being a lovebird, all that I've owned hate them. I keep trying to get a picture of her when she is a little birdy puddle of total relaxation during scratching but her anger over the phone being what I text on overrides the joy of snuggling.

Last week I accidentally broke part of my big toenail, shattering it. I went in the bedroom and used tweezers to remove the broken nail, not thinking at all about Boo being there to watch the proceedings, and ended up with a raw spot where the nail had been. A while later I had Boo out playing on her boings while I crocheted. She hopped down, let me take her picture, and once I took up my work she was puttering on the bed. Apparently deciding she was going to be helpful she ran right down and chomped on my newly injured toe. I about went through the roof and she fluffed out into a proud blue poof, so happy she was being Dr. Boo.

I can't say any of my budgies had a particular hatred for objects around the house, but Pete (RIP) had a serious problem with the Good Humor truck. Not that he ever saw it, no, that wasn't the issue. It was the music that set him off. If he were out playing and the soft, melodic jingle of "Pop Goes the Weasel" began to rise in the distance, Pete's eyes would go wide, his feathers would slick to his body, and he'd stand frozen in palpable terror until the music peaked and then faded away. It was like watching a Vietnam vet who just heard a car backfire: you could practically see scenes of PTSD-inducing horror flashing across his face.

None of the other budgies cared or noticed the music. Just Pete. Weird, strange little Pete. He was an adopted bird, so I had to wonder what kind of encounters, if any, he had with the Good Humor truck before he came to me...

Deoderant plus ruptured bumgrapes does not equal freshness. Just burning agony.
I'm going away this weekend, so Chuffy is going to be staying with some friends. I KNOW he'll be okay, and everything will be fine. He'll have all his toys with him to play with, and the people who are looking after him are lovely people who are great with birds. It's the same couple who looked after Uglynoodles' budgies over Christmas while I watched Iro, so it's not like I even have to worry about them not knowing how to look after Chuffy. One of them even works from home, so he'll have plenty of company. But I STILL can't stop fretting about him. Sometimes I catch myself worrying about loving stupid poo poo like WHAT IF HOW THEY SAY GOODNIGHT TO CHUFFY IS DIFFERENT TO HOW I DO IT AND CHUFFY GETS CONFUSED AND UPSET? A few times I've even thought about cancelling the weekend, but thankfully I'm too cheap to do that as I've already paid for it and wouldn't get refunded. At this point I'm really looking forward to the weekend being over just so that I can see with undeniable certainty that every was fine and will be the next time I go away. Even though everything is obviously totally going to be fine, I'm still gonna miss the hell outta Chuffy.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. Here's Chuffy perching on my face a few days ago. Really hard to take pictures with a bird all up in your face.
