One of the flaws with BG magic is that its either trivialised or its devastating. Like you said, silencing him is cheesy but it works. Potions or scrolls of fire resistance/absorption too for that fight, though slightly less.

So I don't think you cheesed him, really.

I silenced him before he could even talk, while he was still covered by fog of war. Kinda cheesy... Idk, silence has more or less become my most used spell. Problem was, once his protections kicked in he was more or less immune to everything, and casting dispel took longer than him casting a fireball.

Hard as balls, that fight.

But this won't be hard to do in a few minutes. Since all PC and OSX and Linux versions can only come with all the DLCs added, the HasDLC(S:) trigger is essentially a glorified True() trigger; except it's only used in the added content. So even adding ! before it would disable all scripts depending on it. Though with Beamdog's stellar website I don't actually know which NPC's are in all versions. Jesus.
Removing the ~new portraits~ is probably impossible, though. Also I could probably remove the Black Pits option from the game start menu, since they streamlined the GUI elements handling :spergin:

I think I'm going to play a Ranger/Cleric for the Ironman attempt (I predict I won't get past TFAI). I've always played a thief or FMT (only successful completion was as a a FMT). What's the most fun race and party to do use for the EE edition? The only other thief I've ever taken in BG1 and 2 was Imoen (duel classed to mage).

Two questions... Before fixing the bridge in Icewind Dale, can't I free the slaves? It looked like the temperature control machine was not 'useable' and thus I couldn't do anything with it.

Second, the ninja-to and wakazashi or whatever they are called... Are these weapons worth specialising in? I've never tried and good ones seem few and far between. Never understood what's the deal with them.

To free the slaves, talk to the named one on the opposite side of the room from the guy who gives you the repair manual.

Only for a druid I would say. In the EE they included a scimitar which gives +1 APR which is badass. Not sure if its a random drop or what.

Play Ironman as a Wild Mage, bring the npc Wild Mage with you, only memorize Nahals Reckless Dweomer for all your first level slots.

I started a new game at maximum difficulty with an Elf Diviner and wanted to see how long it would take for my PC to die for the first time. It happened in the Nashkel mines, where the pathfinding caused my mage to leave the party and take a detour through a group of kobold archers.

If I could only somewhere find Aias, master of the warcry, then we could go forth and again ignite our battle-lust, even in the face of the gods themselves.
We've always used other threads before, because not everyone's interested and the screenshots tend to clog the thread a bit. Also because you want an OP to refer to and to immortalise the victors.

I was going to wait for the new year, but I definitely can start it up this week if people are already setting out. Probably got more free time now than I will around the beginning of January anyway, to be honest. Anyone got a compelling reason I shouldn't?

I personally won't have time for for a solid effort until the new year, but that's not a compelling reason for anyone that isn't me.

If people are keen then I'd recommend starting it either this weekend or next week (and give people a heads-up in advance) - it's good to start these threads off strong with people ready to post interesting updates, and not just a page or two of "here's my character fresh out of Candlekeep/Château Irenicus".

Anyone have strategies for dealing with the BG1 Duchal Palace fight in Ironman? Especially solo. That fight was really close to killing my successful run in the last thread and I was thinking of trying a solo ironman run for the next one but that fight is the one thing I can't come up with anything resembling a reliable strategy for. What's your limiting factor? Getting killed, or Lila and Belt getting killed?

If the former, depends on your class. Roid the gently caress out if you're a warrior. With an oil of speed, potion of power, potion of 24 strength, and so on, you should absolutely tear up all the dopplegangers. If you're a mage, the dopplegangers are most dangerous because they're fast as hell. Casting SLOW in that room will really change things up for the better.

If your problem is with Lila and Belt getting killed, focus on just 1 (Belt's stronger; keep him). Otiluke's doesn't work anymore; it's viewed as hostile and will end your game. So maybe summon undead/summon monsters around him and try and just box him in.

I've no idea how I'd tackle this fight with a solo rogue or solo cleric. Maybe the solo cleric just summons undead near Belt to protect him, then sanctuaries and hopes the flaming fist can thin the ranks? The thief would need a ton of hasted backstabs, but would probably see Belt get chunked before completion.

That fight and the Aec'Lectec are the 2 most terrifying fights in the game on an ironman run.

Any, really. I haven't decided what I'm going to try for my next attempt, probably either Monk or a Cleric/Thief. I've done solo playthroughs with a Monk and a Sorcerer and that fight was a savescum fest both times. I'd love to figure out a reliable way to do it with a Monk but I'm not sure it's possible. In a normal solo playthrough I just pretty much throw myself at it until I'm lucky enough for the Doppelgangers to focus on either me or the random mooks instead of the dukes. But that obviously wouldn't work, unless I was very lucky, for an ironman solo.

FairGame posted:

Lila and Belt. With all the awesome buff potions in the game it's not hard to keep Charname alive against melee enemies.

The thief probably wouldn't be too bad if you've put a good amount into set snare and trap the place up before the doppelgangers turn. I've not tried it but if you can sneak in set traps, sneak out, rest and repeat it would be really easy. Set snare is godly in BG1.

The last fight before you go to the maze that ultimately leads to the end boss. The one where you have to fight a bunch of Greater Doppelgangers amongst a few friendlies and instantly game over if both Dukes die.

I forgot another horrible area for ironman: coming back to ulgoths beard with the dagger. You don't have time to reposition, there are no ioun stones in bg1 to protect against crits, and those loving assassins come out of nowhere and can chunk a Mage.

It's enough that I won't play a mage on an ironman game.

I do want to do something new, though. Maybe an avenger.

Finished off Icewind Dale and it's assorted expansions. Still a drat fine game and it was fun being able to play the expansions I missed back in the day. Had it bug out with the export function at the end and it would crash but whatever.

My big question is how's the Baldurs Gate saga on iPad. I know the enhanced editions are buggy, but is it anything game breaking or will I be able to deal? Icewind Dale was pretty stable with only the ammo bag issues and two quests glitching.

Invisibility lasts 24 hours. I imagine that having your Mage cast it before entering Ulgoth's Beard from a nearby area will keep him from being targeted by assassins.

Secret to keeping Liia and Belt alive is summons. Just surround them with summons and that will give you enough time to thin out the doppelganger.

So basically unless you're a warrior type then you can do it no problem. As a solo warrior you're kinda hosed and just need to count on taking down the doppelganger faster than they can take down Belt and Liia.

Ugh, i had forgotten how terrible the NPC system can be in BG1, im feeling like dropping khalid to pick up another fighter, and that means dropping jaheira. But i don't really have a divine caster to replace her with because branwen is four levels behind my party, at a shy level 2. Im only in chapter 3 and pretty good aligned. Guess I need Jaheira if I want that divine caster.
