It’s also the internet where people only remember the bad and forget if people apologize or change their stances.

There’s also claims he stole circuits early on for what it’s worth.

The content is good even if I’m not interested in their pedals.

I have been considering picking up both; one thing I’ve found out is that the MV50s are actually kind of designed to use two of those 1x8 cabs in parallel - you can’t get the full 50w output into a single 8Ω cabinet.

Edit: Picked up a Clean set in addition to the AC after finding out that the bundle is $25 cheaper than the Clean head alone used on Reverb.

Very cool. I'll keep that in mind, and yeah, that is bait to buy a second one just for double cab action.

People are modding the hell out of these too, I dug up some discussion about adding both an fx loop and a boost switch:

Yeah, I feel similarly to your post. I think there's enough plausible deniability for me to continue watching their content.

Josh's response to the whole ordeal was weird and he totally bungled it by not putting out an LGBT-affirming statement in my opinion. If you're accused of being a homophobe, you shouldn't really respond by saying something equivalent to "all lives matter."

Yeah Josh has been apologetic about the church and pretty vocal about BLM. Most of his pedals don't appeal to me, but I have an Angry Charlie V3 and it's sensational

Also, most of these Memorial Day sales are manufacturer sales and the prices should be the same across all retailers - Sweetwater, GC/MF, Amazon, etc.

thats cool, my memory of it breaking was a lot of people scratching heads saying "its probably nothing but if its nothing, why not just say that?". Also remember a lot of concern around then about how heavily Strymon was/is associated w/ the worship market around the same time (afaict, just a big market for them and nothing overt), I think it was in the wake of one of the first boycott chick-fil-a campaigns so this was just kind of on everyone's mind. cf the rumors that you get promoted at Sweetwater faster if you join the weirdly conservative church the owners belong to.

I have (clones of but good ones) a Charlie and a Morning Glory and they both sound bleh to me, but I don't particularly like the marshall sound I'm realizing so that's on me. Perfectly fine pedals and I have coveted his muff and screamer things forever.

anyway i was driving and thinking about music and i wanted to say something about writing songs on guitar and especially the compliment i’ve gotten a couple times, of, my chords have a lot of internal movement to them.

the secret is extend every chord unless it feels right — default to something altered.

the theoretical explanation for why this works, and it’s how i imagine jazz gets away with so many weird/cool chord changes, is that an extension gives you an extra common tone to move to different chords with, either making ones that were more abrupt less so, or ones that were less abrupt even more fluid.

for example, the iii chord is rarely used and it’s because it kind of sounds weird going to anything, almost, or you get stepwise movement which can be a bit odd in chord progressions since literally every note changes.

E, G, B in the key of C has two common tones with G, and C. none with Dm, none with F, only one with Am, and only one with B diminished.

but i deeply love the iii chord because if you simply add another third — E, G, B, D — you get:

-two common tones with C, plus stepwise movement downward to the C
-one common tone with Dm
-one common tone with F (i actually like iii -> IV a lot and i usually smooth it out by using a major 7 on IV, to get two common tones)
-you get the entire dominant triad
-you still only get one with Am (though Am7 is common and gives you two)
-and you now have two with B diminished.

and that’s just a 7th voicing- you could do a different alteration and get a different set of possibilities. like an Esus4, and then you don’t have to extend the Am triad to move to it as smoothly if you don’t want to.

we’re used to using stuff like this as a way to sneak out of the key and into another one, for stuff like secondary dominants. but extensions have a really lovely use, which is smoothing out basically any chord movement and making chords feel more melodic and less arbitrary.

from a philosophical perspective, what they also allow me to do is construct similarity. it comes from a Stravinsky lecture where he was talking about how it’s not about adding variety to music. variety is everywhere. instead it’s about making order from chaos — the similarity, the theme, connective tissues between everything. many uncommon chord changes i love the sound of seem impossible or wrong without any extension or alteration, but they come together and seem to work once changed to flow with everything else.

i also want to say i’m not saying “put 7s on top of everything” — sometimes it works to put a 7. but sometimes it works to add a 4, or add a 6. between all the types of alterations, even the fairly common ones, there has NEVER been a time when i still preferred the root triad with a ton of doublings, to all of the alterations and extensions available. i’ve never found one that didn’t more strongly represent what i was feeling or trying to capture in that moment than the basic triad.

Just ordered a Helix LT. Can someone who has one tell me how cool it is so I can hype up even more.

Also, until I get a cab I will just be using it with my monitors that I use in my PC/interface set up. What's the best way to hook it up so I don't have to constantly plug/unplug my monitors from my Scarlett solo to switch them around? Can I just take the helix and input it straight into the Scarlett's XLR without it causing weird issues? I know the Helix itself can just be used as an interface, but I don't want to have to leave it on all the time to have sound on my PC.

When I use my thr10 as an interface I just turn it on before I launch my DAW and select that as the input source. I installed the driver and it shows up as Yamaha thr10x in the menu, and then I turn it off when I'm done. It doesn't send my PC audio out of it when I'm not using it specifically for that.

edit running your cab sim into another interface into your PC is going to add hell of latency that you're going to have to compensate for

For what it's worth, I don't record all that often, and I'm willing to hook it up normally if I do that. I just want the default to be able to turn it on and jam without unplugging stuff and switching it around. What if I used direct monitor on my interface for when I'm just jamming? Wouldn't I avoid latency issues then?

Yeah, what you’re describing should work fine. I’ve got my HX Stomp plugged into one of the 1/4” inputs on my interface and use the direct monitor feature to listen through monitors with minimal lag. An XLR input should work just the same.

Just posting a follow up here. Found an "Angel of Deth" FS on the local auction site and was going to bid on it when I noticed the seller also had a plain black VMNT, allegedly completely unused. Messaged him with some questions and requests for pictures and, well, turns out the AoD one was Indonesian while this black one was a 2011 from the Un Sung factory in Korea. From what I've been able to find on these the korean ones are held in high regard while the Indonesian made version has more mixed reviews. Also, Dave supposedly used a bunch of Korean VMNTs on tour since he preferred their lighter weight to the US ones.

Well, Dean's not really a popular brand here in Sweden so the AoD went for 4800 SEK (around $480). A few minutes later I landed the winning bid on the black one for 4100 ($410). Seems like a heck of a deal considering what they tend to sell for internationally.

Got it home today and I honestly believe the seller wasn't exaggerating. It's absolutely flawless with no visible wear anywhere. Pickup covers have some discoloration but that's due to age. Original hardcase is in excellent condition, and a beastly leather strap was included (and a bag of Tortex .73mm picks of course). Plugged in a fresh 9V battery and tuned up and oh MAN does it sound sweet as all hell. Neck is wonderful as well. Really going to enjoy this thing and I feel like I got a lot for my $$$.

I think learning some solos note for note would help you on a few different fronts. I don’t have any tricks for learning them other than sourcing tablature and internalizing the music. Your ear training will get tested too, as tabs are prone to inaccuracies. Try different genres too. A Charlie Parker solo on guitar would be sick.

You might be surprised by what your piano teacher can offer on these questions too. They are probably a much more accomplished musician than I. They probably know a good deal about repertoire and memorization for one.

i know the theory stuff but it's kinda like

it's hard for me to learn solos note for note from tabs because a lot of the time, i don't understand what the hell is going on in tabs. so i have to basically translate it to the staff, so i can see the music/intervals, and then think about what chords the notes are above. and then suddenly it will make sense because i can understand it in terms of music theory.

i think it's kind of like, since i never went through an actual technique or system of learning scales and boxes, i can't look at tab, and see "this note on this string", and see what's going on in a lead context. i'm familiar with most chord shapes i end up seeing, so that's not as much of an issue.

and the reason i say any of that is that it's much, much easier for me to play solos and internalize that information when it has context. it's easier to break it into chunks, like the beginning of the weezer - no one else solo.

e
b
g -999
d ------99999666
a-----------------------77777
e

looks basically like complete gibberish to me. but then i translate it into notes - E, B, G#, E - and it's just a descending E major triad. and then that's a lot easier for me to play. and i know it's above the chords E, A, and A/G# - so all those notes make a lot of sense over those chords.

really i guess i just need a system to actually work through and understand all the major scale boxes and shapes so that i can look at a tab and go "oh, that's what they're doing there" and say "wait that doesn't make any loving sense, i'll just play it like (this) because it's easier for me" if needed.

yeah but the really cool, not frustrating thing about ultimate guitar dot com is that in the standard notation view, it doesn't have a key signature. so everything is loving insane to read, because it has a million accidentals, some of which don't make sense (like notating an e with a flat symbol next to it, directly before an e natural, even though you're in the key of E major and it makes way more sense to just have it on the D line with a sharp sign).
