it's interesting how the faux-cynical 'all politicians are liars' mentality allows politicians to get away with some genuinely spectacular dishonesty. nobody wants to look naïve so people appear to have genuinely internalised the idea that better things aren't possible and it's better not to try. pretty cool imo

but people say they know boris is a known liar, but they trust him and they’ll vote for him anyway there’s something else going on in there, or the lack of it at-least I suppose

legit a lot of people can't separate spin from outright lies and it's a big democratic problem because it means that politicians aren't disadvantaged for saying things which are flatly and obviously untrue. the reaction when they're caught is "pffft, politicians! all liars!" because jeremy corbyn keeps the tellie on in the background on christmas day and doesn't want to admit he doesn't pay attention to the queen's speech

identity politics have shown some pretty big flaws as a progressive cornerstone recently imo, especially with the antisemitism stuff. the right has seized upon the inherent subjectivism (people own their own stories, radical privilege of lived experience &c) and have realised that if one can create a perception that the left is hostile to them, so long as it's sincerely held it's very difficult to actually counteract. not that a lot of terribly unsavoury types aren't raging about anything antiracist being irrelevant idpol, but as a philosophy i think it's passed its zenith re: this debate, i like corbyn a lot but he's not the sharpest debater. i think he's uncomfortable with having to spin on his feet, possibly because he spent most of his political career not spinning at all.

he absolutely killed it in the labour leadership hustings, but presumably he's since realised that many things aren't suited for a wider audience and that there's a reason party leaders act as cagey as they do. in a way it's unfortunate, i don't think he particularly enjoys this style of politics

well that's ominously similar to the brexit referendum realtalk it's not bad for corbyn, this. he's not at his best in debates - whereas johnson absolutely is - and his personal approval ratings are in the absolute toilet, so being within the margin of error is OK

though "representative survey of viewers" is also an interesting point, one wonders who the viewers were - if the average is over 55 (is that the present crossover point?) i'd say it's downright Good

it's absolutely infuriating that the liberals who have spent the last two years relentlessly and to a large extent spuriously attacking corbyn's character are going to take the probable election defeat as a vindication of their, the liberals', project and a defeat of socialism. these idiots have worked actively towards their own ideological horror of a hard brexit and are now crying about why corbyn can't save them why is he so mean loving idiots
