I know this has come up before but how is the quality of the HBO content in the Apple TV app vs Amazon? The HBO go (and now) quality is really poo poo but I want to be able to download shows which you can’t do via the amazon app. I’m thinking I’ll just subscribe to HBO through the Apple TV app as it lets you download for offline viewing but I won’t do it unless the quality is just as good.

When you mean through the AppleTV app, do you mean using iTunes? Just a warning (far in advance) that if you subscribe to HBO using Amazon or iTunes your subscription doesn’t gets ported over to HBO Max when it comes out in May. Of course that could change before then.

Yeah the Apple TV is a separate app now. I’m definitely not subscribing through the HBO app / site because the PQ is straight garbage. I seem to recall the Apple TV app using its own encoding (like the amazon app) which has drastically better PQ.

Do any of the streaming services have a regular program guide? It seems like they’re all trying to ~disrupt~ tv watching. I’m doing a Sling trial because it has the channels we normally watch but I hate the UI. I haven’t tried Hulu Live TV yet but the regular Hulu app isn’t my favorite so I’m not holding out any hope on live.

Hulu Live now has a normal guide after not having one at the start. YouTubeTV as mentioned. Sling’s UI has always been poo poo and is one of the reasons I never stuck with them (the other is if you watch a lot of sports, they really don’t offer any real savings over the other services).

What device are you using it on? On AppleTV it had a normal guide interface but I don't remember if it was an option that had to be turned on or not.

I’m on a TCL Roku TV. I’ll take another look at YouTube. I seem to recall that it’s missing NickJr which will be a whole thing with my wife. Maybe we can also subscribe to noggin. My directv bill is going up $100 next month so now is the time to try these services out.

I went from DirecTV to YouTube TV. One thing you're going to have to accept is that you're pretty spoiled by the quality of the DirecTV hardware and interface which is so far ahead of every cable interface that it's difficult to believe they were designed to do the same things. By and large I'd characterize YouTube TV's interface as acceptable compared to DirecTV with most of my problems centered around ambiguities in what buttons take me where in the app. In terms of layout and presentation though, it's better than any cable system I've ever seen.

Disney+ may just be the end of my low cost cable cutting days. I can’t stop my kids from streaming 4K cartoons with Disney’s poo poo compression. Comcast is salivating as I am at 900 mb of this months 1gig cap. Since I am in a monopolized area, I am looking at $50 to upgrade to unlimited. At that rate I may as well go back on a bundle. Can’t there be a trash resolution option? My kids don’t need to get their rocks off watching Gadget in C&DRR in UHD. We did that in low-def back in the day just fine.

Is there a reason why ISP's don't just switch to 4G/5G internet without caps as opposed to offering Fiber/Cable/DSL? Wouldn't the completely wireless infrastructure be cheaper for them to maintain? With the mobile hotspots available from Verizon/ATT/etc., that appears to be where things are headed, but the prices are comparable to cell plans with throttling after a certain usage

Eventually you get to the point where it's not one hell of a lot different than running fiber to every neighborhood or house.

The wireless providers all have insanely low caps before de-prioritizing the poo poo out of your connection, anyway, so I don't know why you'd use them as a model.

That seems really weird. I had never thought that there was a distribution contract with the channels. I would have thought that if a content distributor made a channel, then they just did the channel....also, how does this work with the Disney-Fox deal? So this takes away Fox, FXX, National Geographic, Fox Sports....right?

FXX and Nat Geo would be Disney owned networks and not Fox anymore, so I would expect those are still there.
