I've been pretty down about getting dumped or whatever. In these situations I listen to a lot of Tom Waits. This song is one of the ones I keep coming back to. It usually makes me cry. But it's also kind of nice.

Here is a good song I like to chill to when I have time to chill:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh0yEHedLP0

some other tunes I've been bumping a fair bit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch-TDGW-zXs noisy as hell psychrock/krautrock from 70's Japan, this one of their more mellow and laid back tunes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoLwgsx7hWA a chill techno track. I've been getting back into electronic stuff recently after a while. Really like the vibe here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCWUH-nMRPA mellow indie rock. well produced and i like the singer's voice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNXxd3yYDaM Somekinda... psychedelic trap? I dunno. Dude was in Digable Planets if anyone here is into mid 90's hip-hop. Bonus the video is animated by another of my favorite artists, Chad Vangaalen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKHD6INztfA One of Chad Vangaalen's tunes. He's also an animator so he did his own video.

No Trend was needlessly antagonistic towards their audience and most people in general but I always find them cuttingly funny. They started as a punk band, when that was becoming popular they released a noise album, when that was popular they put out an album of Muzak Teen Love is a favorite and I think it's hilarious and weird.

I never really got into Anal oval office but this kind of cracks me up.

Talking Heads hold a really special place for me in my heart. I remember listening to their albums as a kid with my dad and trying to sing along to Burning Down the House, although I only really knew the line "Burning down the house!" which I'd probably sing/scream as loud as I could. My dad was and is a big Talking Heads and Devo fan. It's about the only music we tend to agree on. Sorry dad. I just cannot get into The Grateful Dead. But I have a fond memory of my dad helping me move from Santa Fe to Portland by car. He took the time off of work and we'd camp along the way, just like back in the day when I was a kid, but it was just the two of us. I didn't know what I was doing after graduation and didn't start college until two years after graduation. We'd drive all day, when we stopped my dad would buy a six pack of local beer, we'd set up to camp in his tiny little trailer thing, we'd drink that six-pack and chat. I learned a lot about my childhood, my family, his relationship to his family, and his mindset when I was born. I have always dealt with depression in one way or another and for a while was convinced I was a mistake, more or less. That trip helped me realize that that wasn't the case. My dad was into it. He loved me. I knew he did but it confirmed that and despite all of our ups and downs he's always the family member I can go to for assurance, love, support, or just someone who will listen. In a lot of ways I think it's just because we have a lot of things in common mentally. But we were drinking that sixer and dad was talking about music. How he saw Devo on SNL with his step-dad and sister and everyone thought they were too weird but he thought it was really cool. He talked about The New York Dolls. My dad does have a love of punk in many ways, when I was getting into it I found his old In God We Trust Inc. and Jealous Again LPs in his stash. Then he started talking about Talking Heads, for some reason he started talking about the song Heaven and how it's very Buddhist in concept in a lot of ways because it's about serenity through lack of change and constant but not overwhelming happiness. So this song kind of always takes me there and comforts me.

I like the Hold Steady fine, they're just kind of samey. I don't know them well enough to really define any different periods in their sound, they're just kind of costant. I was pretty into Stay Positive when it came out.
