This sort of goes against the scope of this thread but I think it’s worth mentioning:

Watcher, a channel started by a couple of guys formerly of Buzzfeed who got popular with their mystery/ghost hunting videos, is leaving YouTube to put all of their new content behind a paywall.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-ohi1iYP5k

People are pissed about it, with the comments being almost unanimously negative, and the like/dislike ratio being ~35k:195k. Basically, they’re going to charge near Netflix prices for a sliver of what Netflix offers, based on what is essentially a niche product built on a cult following. Most of the fans think their CEO put them up to it so he can start a show where he travels around the world and eats expensive meals, but the talent, Shane and Ryan, have made their beds too. Between the terrible decision, the way it was announced, and some of the comments from their social media team (allegedly from the CEO), this is going to go over like the Hindenburg.

[update] ope, they walked it back, big time; still gonna launch the channel, but after a waiting period videos will go up on YouTube

Briesbe is an amazingly underrated content creator on both Twitch and Youtube. She gets into a wide variety of games and activities, ranging from horror game playthroughs to urban myths about body butter that attracts spiders, to her most recent video about the experience of watching Wrestlemania with friends for the first time. Every stream and video is a journey and Briesbe is an amazing guide. She also has a lot of intriguing interviews with her friends that she met through Twitch, Discord and Games Done Quick. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to her channel to see where she takes you next.

If you watch all of her videos and decide you need MORE, go ahead and check out the channel her husband and their mutual friends run at Drutherz Brutherz, where Briesbe is a frequent guest star, or head on over to https://twitch.tv/briesbe to catch her stream live.

Lore Lodge is yet another one of those channels about mysteries and some true crime. Which I normally have little appetite for, but the host avoids sensationalism, is even handed with theories and does his footwork, and talks about diverse topics. He pulls in a bit of history, outdoors / wilderness knowledge and Bible studies, obviously passion areas for him. Some interesting recent ones have included looking at lingering mysteries surrounding MH370, the 411 national parks disappearances theory, the origins of Halloween.

It's interesting seeing the other videos alongside Bobby's. I watched the slo-mo guys, I dunno about Adam's, I'd seen enough by then. Bobby is so talented/hardworking and authorial it's funny seeing him with youtubers on sort of equal footing in the first place. His stuff is what the Rubberbandits have always done, which is, put inarticularly, "artistic funny", and I'd never imagine them on even keel like that.

The dudes, Adam etc. goofing off unscripted and cackling at the slo-mo footage a dozen times vs. Bobby's video that barely even uses or needs that (incredible) visual element because he's a loving maestro of comic writing, performing, editing, writing and performing music, oh and all the actual craft on display in the video too. His stuff just runs circles around them. And, as I've pointed out, anything I've seen on TV for a long time. Maybe ever?

Anyway it's not to poo poo on youtubers, there's obviously a huge crowd that's OK with that level of quality in exchange for the quantity these other youtubers offer. And it's not like they're bad at what they do, it's just that what they do is so different. Bobby's stuff is like cinema and their stuff is like, well, Mythbusters. I guess I feel like stuff of Bobby's talent level deserves some kind of other platform instead of the baggage of what being a "youtuber" implies.

Yeah the quality vs quantity aspect is a big part of it. BF's channel has been running since August 2022 but he's only posted 5 full videos in that entire time and they're always under 30 minutes long, and sometimes as short as only 19 minutes. The Slow Mo guys have posted nearly 3 dozen videos over the same period and Adam Savage has posted over seven hundred, which is a rate of more than 1 per day. BF is using youtube as an outlet for his art but those other guys are using it for their careers, they're making huge bank off their channels and their business model is to churn out as much content as they can as often as they can to maximize views. BF's channel has only received 2.5 million views, Adam Savage's channel has over 1.5 billion and the Slow Mo Guys have over 2 billion. They're using Youtube for very different ends.

Also Bobby really did write an entire book for this episode, the audiobook version (narrated by BF himself) is 4.5 hours long and the print version is 233 pages long. :eyepop:
https://linktr.ee/bobbyfingers

Dan Olson also spent a whole month writing an entire book to prove a point for one of his videos but I think it was only around 100 pages long. He's another youtuber who only posts very very rarely

Here's a postscript to the event which I think is pretty emblematic of that difference you were talking about. That romance novel that Bobby Fingers wrote contains the secret coordinates of the buried Fabio sculpt but because he knew he was going to be collaborating with Adam Savage he also included a secret clue to the location in Adam's workshop where he was planning on hiding a secret gift
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yTDnuK0q7E

So not only did Bobby do all the work that went into his own video AND wrote an entire romance novel which was way way longer than it needed to be, he also made an extra model to hide in Adam Savage's workshop, wrote a clue into the book to help Adam find it and watched a bunch of Adam's old videos to find a good place to hide it. None of this was used in his own videos and he'll probably never even mention it publicly.

Conversely, when Adam found out about all this he didn't even bother reading the book to find the secret message placed in it just for him, he got his Discord members to read it and find the clue for him and when he went looking for it he used that as an opportunity to create some quick & easy 'content' for his channel

Edit: on the other hand this might have been a ploy by BF to trick Adam into making his Discord members buy Bobby's book and make a few extra bucks, lol

Especially since there's an audio book version and he could have just listened to that in an afternoon while he was doing other stuff.

Copa90 Stories is a channel that, among other things, make long documentaries about football/soccer. The best ones are hour long deep dives into specific clubs or rivalries, that often doubles as excellent docos about the recent history and culture of the cities as a whole. Episodes that I remember loving are the ones about Hamburg and Berlin, and especially the one about the superclassico derby in Buenos Aires.

Here's a fairly recent one about the Turkish club Trabzonspor as an example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MIVFzQ59HA

I should note that I've never cared about club football at any point in my life, so an interest in the sport is not required to enjoy these at all.

I watch Secret Base specifically for Jon Bois's videos, which have the knack of turning charts about sports statistics and pans across Google Earth into gripping tales about the ridiculousness of the human condition. (You might know Jon as the creator of 17776 and 20020, a couple of little stories about what American football might look like in a time after everyone became immortal, as narrated by three sentient space probes.)

He's just started up a patreon with an eye towards making more videos about topics that aren't sports focused, like that weird little political goblin from the 90s, Ross Perot. I haven't watched that one yet but I'm gonna.
