DC told retailers at the last summit (that I was not at) that the Rebirth branding would stick around until the first stage of the Rebirth saga comes to an end. And supposedly Johns is going to write another one shot next year that will reveal the Watchmen connection in full.

quote:

Why can't you get it through your big dumb head that what I don't like is just changing poo poo for the sake of change or just to score points in the media.
This is a huge projection, you are assuming in bad faith that characters you don't like are "changing for the sake of change" to "score points in the media" and things you like are just perfectly normal. DC brought back the Lois/Superman romance, was that just "changing poo poo for the sake of change" or to score points with the media that remembers a 1990s television show and also a bunch of movies?

Maybe don't read D-list linkblogs that do lovely research? Watchmen launched a million lovely thinkpieces but I don't bemoan the fact that DC published the comic. There are probably 5,000 really dumb poorly researched things being said about representation of women or people of color or LGBTQ people on Atlanta and Mr. Robot and Arrow and Brooklyn 99 and Orange is the New Black and The Daily Show, maybe we should shut these shows down because THEY'RE NEW SHOWS CHANGING poo poo JUST TO CHANGE IT AND NOT BE SEASON 68 OF BONANZA AND ALSO THEY GET ATTENTION FOR NOT BEING ALL STRAIGHT WHITE DUDES AND THIS JUST MAKES ME SO ANGRY THAT SOMEONE CLAIMED HIS NAME WAS TREVER NOAH gently caress HIM FOR LETTING SOMEONE POST A WRONG FACT ABOUT HIS TOKEN SOUTH AMERICAN rear end ON THE INTERNET

quote:

First the article starts with "He’s here. He’s superhuman. Get used to it." which is so loving stupid when A)comics were one of the first entertainment mediums to accurately portray gay people, show them in positive light, and there have been gay characters since the 90s when I first started reading comics
You are getting mad at a faceless content aggregator who probably got $10 to jazz up a press release and post it on the morning of August 11. You're a young buck who only started reading comics in the 1990s, but trust me, I remember the 1980s (and 1990s, and 2000s, and 2010s) where people start articles with BIFF BAM POW, COMICS AREN'T JUST FOR KIDS but somehow I don't get so mad I tear up my Love and Rockets comics because someone wrote a lovely lede.

I'm also really not sure what you're talking about with "comics were one of the first entertainment mediums to accurately portray gay people". I mean if you're talking about underground comics by Howard Cruse or whatever, sure, but there were plenty of novels and plays and arthouse films that were contemporary to the underground scene.

If you're talking about Big Two comics, man I don't know what to tell you. Northstar? El Extrano?

quote:

B) comic fans have for the most part always embraced these characters. So why is the article written like "this ain't your childhood comics we got gay heroes now and y'all better get used to it!" Like wtf with the hostility and then the article is riddled with numerous inaccuracies and no attempts at fact checking (The Ray was first introduced in Justice League in the 70s wtf?) these writers are the kinds of people Dan Didio wants to cater too.
1) Holy poo poo you're projecting so much. The entirety of the "hostility" in the text is using a turn of a famous gay rights chant as a lazy opening. Everything else is in your head. Also in what world is the entire comics industry pandering to Power Broker Kimberly Roots and her website I've never heard of, and her 4,000 Twitter followers? How did you even find this person to focus all your anger on?

Here's what she did for fact checking: she googled "Freedom Fighters DC Comics" and didn't understand the vagaries of Quality Comics publishing books in the 1940s and then being purchased by DC and then eventually they retconned it so these characters were a team called the Freedom Fighters that never existed in the 1940s, and if you google "Freedom Fighters DC Comics" it states that the team's first appearance is in... wait for it... an issue of Justice League of America in the 1970s. This was the first appearance of a DC Comics character called The Ray, though it's not the same Ray, which is the sort of thing that people posting on obscure content aggregators don't care about.

quote:

I just hate things like sticking cyborg in the Justice league and pretending this is the first time the Justice League has portrayed diversity when loving Justice League International was doing a far better job of it in the 80s (not to mention Detroit, JLA, Extreme Justice, and Meltzer and Mcduffies runs)
Who is pretending this? Is is Industry Titan Kimberly Roots? Is it a sixteen year old on Tumblr who posted that they loved Teen Titans Go and are so happy that they're letting Cyborg into the Justice League even though this STUPID LITTLE IGNORANT BITCH has never even heard of Vibe or Tasmanian Devil? Who are you even talking abot?

quote:

it's just a bunch of baloney and cheap ways to attract attention without actually doing it in a meaningful way that serves the story and the DC universe.
If you're holding things to that level, DC should be publishing about eight issues a year. You seem to fixate on one very, very specific bit of baloney and cheap attention getting. DC just stealth-renamed a series THE DEATH OF HAWKMAN, how is that not more of an attention-grabbing, headline-baiting, desperate cry for help in a real and tangible way? How is a single line about Natasha Irons (who has appeared for approximately 10 pages prior in the New52) having a girlfriend in college a more base and callow attempt to sway the Giants Amongst Men, The Trendsetters Who Control Culture, the Secret Jewish Cabal of the Mighty TV Line Dot Com Website?

And why does one send you into a rage, but the other doesn't?

quote:

You want gay characters fine Batwoman, Bunker, and Midnighter being a supporting character in grayson and then getting his own title were all good ways to do it. Wanting to turn the Ray gay just for some headlines and to pretend this is the first time we're going to have a diverse Justice league that reflects America just grates me.
1) THERE ARE THREE GAYS, WHAT MORE DO YOU GAYS WANT????
2) Seriously. WHO IS SAYING THIS. Who is this half black half asian gender fluid strawman that haunts you so?

American Dracula, I want to understand.

Goku would be ashamed of you.
I can't tell if I should be enjoying New Superman or not. An entire story about cheap Chinese knockoffs of American superheroes seems a tad culturally insensitive. Plus the concept that mankind can just make new Kryptonians and Amazonians whenever they want fairly easily opens up a whole Pandora's Box of story problems. I mean, why would any world government ever put up with alien gods running around when they can just throw anyone they want into a machine and create a replacement that is loyal to their regime? America alone would cart off every hardline establishment supporting patriot they could find to a Superman assembly line. There'd be an entire new branch of the armed forces made up of fiercely loyal Trump supporting Kryptonians.

I feel like nobody involved with this particular story thought any of this through.

The superman creation machine specifically was powered by energy Superman released from his body when he died, the same energy that created the Superwomen. I think it was a one use machine.

As for the Chinese Wonder-Woman I dunno how they created her.

I have to say that, no matter how bizarre or even potentially-problematic it is, I personally find it very cool that Wonder Woman is now a real United Nations ambassador along with having been a fictional one for decades

There's evidently been some outcry over this from the UN itself, some of it quite valid -- we couldn't find an actual, real heroine to hang this accolade on? -- but at least parts of the other complaints seem centered on her sexualized appearance and American iconography. And I almost find that kind of ironic or amusing in its way, because those are after all the exact sorts of criticisms that detractors have leveled at the character, in-story, within the source material, in her role as an ambassador and role model. It's also the exact sort of issue that the fictional character herself would find invigorating and important.

Real life should be more like a Greg Rucka storyline more often.
