What is a level of authenticity? Is it like how grez's dad is now a more authentic woman following his operation?

Pissflaps posted:What is a level of authenticity? in American football, the real uniforms have a couple different kinds of fabric and numbers stitched on and fully stitched logos and stuff. The cheapest replicas have all that screen-printed on, more expensive have really cheaply stitched numbers and names, slightly nicer ones look a little better, than the "real" authentic ones are like $250 (£150). It's about as stupid as the baseball tops are here too (and those are somehow even more expensive at the top end).

given the amount of contact in American football, the uniforms are made out of really sturdy material. The "authentic" Philadelphia Eagles jersey I own has thick polyester fabric for the body of the jersey, with elastic panels on the side, elastic cuffs and collar. The logo patches on the sleeves, script on the chest, numbers, and letters are all their own separate pieces of fabric, which are then sewn onto the main jersey. Since that isn't really necessary for most fan jerseys, you can get a cheaper one with no elastic material, and all of the numbers, letters, and graphics heat-sealed to the shirt. There also exists an intermediate jersey type with no elastic and the team graphics heat-sealed, but the letters and numbers sewn on. Here's a pair of sample Eagles jerseys, for reference: This first one happens to be the lowest quality kind, the dead ringer being the holes visible in the number, indicating that it's sealed on. The second is an "authentic," although I believe that the name and numbers are computer generated in this one (they generally take a picture of a blank jersey and CGI the name and numbers on so they can use one picture for multiple players.) In particular, the comparison shows how the authentic has elastic cuffs, a thicker build in general, and the Eagle patches on the sleeves are actually patches. This same difference exists in baseball, for no real reason, and to a lesser extent in hockey, for similar but different reasons related to fabric quality and their water absorption. e: but, really, it all boils down to the jersey manufacturers figuring out what fans will pay for. Rugby: A sport which is pretty much based on grabbing your opponents by the shirt and dragging them down. Sells a replica shirt which is just a slightly thick polyester polo. It's about US$150. The 'supporters shirt' is just a slightly worse polyester and costs $30 less.

So in that case a slightly polyester polo is probably the best thing for most supporters.

That was going by All Blacks shirts. Super 15 shirts are $150 and are listed as "as worn by the players" but they don't have any higher/lower tier ones. Embroidered logos, heat sealed (or whatever it's called) sponsor/comp logos. It is worth nothing though that (at least in recent memory) team logos/numbers etc sometimes come off.

But on the other hand, Adidas makes this sort of thing and that totally makes it worth it: Adidas do make fantastic rugby jerseys. Also, the numbers fell off of this one during a game against Ireland. edogawa rando fucked around with this message at 11:12 on May 12, 2011 |

I know Adidas likes to use their newer logo for athletics while retaining the old one for fashionable or retro looks, but have they ever actually done research to find out if anyone on the planet actually prefers the new one for use on anything?

I think the new one (must be 20 years old at this stage?) looks better for jerseys and stuff. Could be just from seeing the seperation of the two for all this time that it just makes sense, though.
