Any suggestions for podcast related gifts? I'm trying to figure something out for my brother, who's a big fan of Jordan Jesse Go, MBMBAM, Comedy Bang Bang, and other podcasts like that.

I love the idea of ever getting to go to MaxFunCon, but I'd only entertain the notion if I was assured to meet either Merlin Mann, Adam Lisagor, or Scott Simpson.

I would then explode.

It's weird how, when you listen to podcasts to the exclusion of most other entertainment, your pantheon of people you consider to be "celebrities" changes.

He introduced the show, but he was only up there for 3 minutes maybe. Aimee Mann was also there - she sang a song and played percussion with the reigning monarchs. (She must live at Largo. She dropped in on three of the last three shows I've seen there. Not that I mind.) Patton Oswalt did some standup, and Karen Kilgarrif sang her comedy songs with the band.

Overall it was a really good show. No dud guests! Greg and Dave were hilarious, even though they seemed a little uncomfortable dual-hosting a live show. And there was free ice cream at the end.

I think the one-man podcast is really hard to pull off. Ham Radio was my least favorite in the Earwolf Challenge, Gelmania is already wearing thin, and although PFT is my favorite comedian, the "Great Undiscovered Project" segments have never worked for me.

Ironically, Mike Schmidt's podcast would be good if it wasn't for Lily's unbearable cackling at every loving word out of his mouth.

Hands raw with high fives.
During the intro to the rafflecast, after the college radio bit, I was thinking, "Huh, ok, a podcast send-up of shock-jock radio with some sketches, this could maybe actually be good."
Then it turned out that the entire podcast is made up of the worst segment of other podcasts, the listener submitted stuff. I am listening to your comedy podcast because I want to hear actual comedy, and not "haha, so random!" listener submissions.

I think it's completely because of Largo, which is a club in LA that books a lot of comedians and songwriters. They end up getting to know each other and participating in each other's shows. I went to see Michael Penn there and Patton Oswalt was the unannounced opener. I went to the Paul F. Tompkins Show and Jon Brion, who used to do a weekly concert at Largo, played a few songs.

I think Aimee Mann is also a genuine fan of a lot of these comedians, and they're genuine fans of hers - they usually seem pretty happy to have her there.

Like wafflesnsegways said, I think it's just that she likes hanging out with comedians (who wouldn't?) and appreciates comedy, and most of the comedians she knows love her music. The first time I'd ever heard of her was when she was on Stephen Merchant's BBC 6 music show a few years ago and she mentioned being a big fan of comedy, so I wasn't very surprised to see her turning up on all these podcasts and being friends of comedians.

Hopefully some day soon we'll get Smerch on Never Not Funny or something and it will be glorious.

For anyone that has abandoned The Nerdist but loved Michael Rooker's appearance on Doug Loves Movies... Rooker is on the latest Nerdist podcast and it's great. The bouncing around of topics works well with Rooker's apparently short attention span and general craziness. It's funny to hear Rooker complaining about how he would deal with a zombie invasion vs. what his character does on The Walking Dead.

I'll still listen to it sometimes, but it is in my B-team of podcasts I listen to at work. I may be wrong but I just get the feeling that the podcast is a chore for him that he feels he has to do every week. There's not the enthusiasm that you get from Joe Rogan or Howard & Kulap. I feel they love doing their podcasts and are having a great time.

I enjoy it the most when his girlfriend is on, and I don't listen to it that much anymore. It still cracks me up on occasion, but there's a lot of filler. I listened to the Thanksgiving one recently. So strange for him to hold a grudge for so long, considering Michael (and the other Michael, Showalter), who I both like, haven't had much success since if you measure it in terms of cancellations. It's Black's own self-deprecating opening joke in 'Very Famous'.

I think Maron needs to step outside his comedy bubble a little bit, because he made the State sound like some broad MTV Gen Y hit, when really it was never that scale and has gained a devoted cult following since -- although very few people I know my age, 22, would have heard of them.

Maron's a complete and total rear end in a top hat, no two ways to put it. It just so happens that sometimes he has good interviews and some people like his standup. I can only imagine how awful he'd be if he did indeed step outside of the comedy bubble. Suicide, probably.

As long as he can find some common ground he's actually really good at interviewing people; he seems to get a fair bit out of them. If he has nothing, then you get a Gallagher interview or a Conan interview. I mean, listen to the Donald Glover one - he gets some sort of connection established early on and it's a great interview.

It's something I've never thought about but it is surprising how serious people most stand-up comedians are. Guys like Maron or Rogan aren't funny people. They're just approval seeking machines, aren't they. Quite sad really.

His phrase that I find the most annoying is "Who are your guys?"

I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it has something to do with the implication that most people can be defined by a small group of writers/comedians/whatever that they enjoyed when they were 15/20/X years old.

But it's probably mostly the phrasing. If he asked, "who were your comedic influences when you were first breaking into comedy?" it would bother me much less.

He begrudges everyone who's gotten a sketch show or sitcom out of jealousy without really defending his own attempts at the genres. Is he any good at acting? Or more importantly auditioning? I feel like those are some pretty important skills to have if you're going to, you know, work in entertainment. He seems angry that nobody's had the balls to look past his lack of skill and make him a success just based on his standup.

The one where he gets interviewed does go into some of this; like his show on Comedy Central getting passed over for The Daily Show leading to resentment towards both it and Jon Stewart (which is petty but I can understand it).
