I'd forgotten how normal the ST looks after seeing my RS every day. (oh god it's so dirty)

That's the previous generation which is somehow more restrained than the new one. I can deal with boy racer if it isn't just absolutely garish and ugly. The new one is both of those.

The owners manual specifies driving behavior for the break in period.

Yeah, it depends between cars. Some have 500 mile oil change and drive like a grandma. Mine had ECU detuned for 1000 miles and lovely oil that they say not to change but might be a good idea.

The RS doesn't require any specific break in treatment according to the owners' manual.

The manual says not to exceed 2/3 of max RPM I believe but I don't think they detune the ECU.

Someone in the car blogosphere (Matt Farah maybe?) seems to think the RS has built in break in period, with reduced power for the first 1k miles or so. No idea if true. I went easy on my FiST (kind of) til about 1k miles. Changed the break-in oil, (which is shockingly green btw) and then started fanging it. Up to 8500 miles now, been running Cobb OTS stage 1 91 octane tune for the last 500 or so. The OTS 93 octane tune prompted some mild negative ignition corrections (prob my local gas being lovely) so I downgraded to 91.

Why is the service tech at my dealership telling me to use 87 petrol and the handbook says use premium? He said the 87 has less carbon buildup or some poo poo.

While he's right about the carbon buildup with DI engines and 87 octane;use premium. I'll take a little more build up over potentially throwing a rod through the block. This is a recurring theme even with the 3.5 ecoboost in the F150s

Well Ford seemed to have fixed the problem with the Gen 2 3.5 ecoboost by adding port injection on top of DI.
