I'd forgotten how normal the ST looks after seeing my RS every day.

Oh those flaps look good.

Might as well do it for less than a hundred. That sparkle paint is not going to be cheap to touch up.

That's the previous generation which is somehow more restrained than the new one. I can deal with boy racer if it isn't just absolutely garish and ugly. The new one is both of those.

Very nice!

Speaking of brand new cars, anyone know if there is a recommended break in mileage for these? I'm trying to keep it below 4000rpm or so for the first 500 miles.

The manual for the FiST says just not to drive at a consistent RPM for the first 1000 miles. I don't really think you have to worry about it. Drive it now like you'll drive it later.

Had the same question about my GTI and the dealer was like "don't bother. Drive it like you stole it."

Yeah, it depends between cars. Some have 500 mile oil change and drive like a grandma. Mine had ECU detuned for 1000 miles and lovely oil that they say not to change but might be a good idea.

The RS doesn't require any specific break in treatment according to the owners' manual.

My Focus ST said to vary the driving conditions during the first 1,000 miles. So, a mix of highway / city driving.

2014 Ford Focus ST Supplement Manual posted:

BREAKING-IN YOUR VEHICLE
Your vehicle does not need an extensive break-in. Try not to drive
continuously at the same speed for the first 1000 miles
(1600 kilometers) of new vehicle operation. Vary your speed frequently
in order to give the moving parts a chance to break in.
Do not add friction modifier compounds or special break-in oils since
these additives may prevent piston ring seating.

The manual says not to exceed 2/3 of max RPM I believe but I don't think they detune the ECU.

The dealership consists of sales people, not engineers who designed every piece of your car. Those guys want you to come in for service. :v:

Someone in the car blogosphere (Matt Farah maybe?) seems to think the RS has built in break in period, with reduced power for the first 1k miles or so. No idea if true.

I went easy on my FiST (kind of) til about 1k miles. Changed the break-in oil, (which is shockingly green btw) and then started fanging it. Up to 8500 miles now, been running Cobb OTS stage 1 91 octane tune for the last 500 or so. The OTS 93 octane tune prompted some mild negative ignition corrections (prob my local gas being lovely) so I downgraded to 91.

Why is the service tech at my dealership telling me to use 87 petrol and the handbook says use premium? He said the 87 has less carbon buildup or some poo poo.

While he's right about the carbon buildup with DI engines and 87 octane;use premium. I'll take a little more build up over potentially throwing a rod through the block. This is a recurring theme even with the 3.5 ecoboost in the F150s

Well Ford seemed to have fixed the problem with the Gen 2 3.5 ecoboost by adding port injection on top of DI.

What? How does lower octane fuel lead to less carbon buildup?

Correct answer. Catch cans are a half-assed patch and having multiport injection on top of DI also allows for much easier power increases.

Lower octane fuel burns faster supposedly leading to less vapor and carbon buildup. I don't know how big of a difference it is but I've heard it from my dealership and several places online pertaining to the F150

This is not true. Faster burn rates would increase effective octane rating.
