The trick with sports anime is it is a battle shounen, but since it is about sports the contrast makes it inherently hilarious. The insane over the top nature of shounen makes everything way more exciting too. I'm glad Zack has grasped onto this so hard.

Eyeshiel 21 is a comic everyone should read, as an example.

Speaking of Jojo parallels, I like that despite Max's Jotaro-esque attempts to remain aloof and cool a lot of the time, he still occasionally is just a big ol' goofy loser.

There was also another occurrence of some type of bird behind Johnny, wasn't there? At least, I remember a comment from Zack about him forgetting about the eagle appearance and making a joke about it becoming a Thing.

"The {name} child" seems to be common phrasing among spirits so I'm not sure this means that the spirit knows Francisco.

Right but why would this particular spirit know her last name? I don't think it's been said in its presence.

That part at least could suggest a familiarity with the family.

Maybe it just also gets knowledge from whoever it's controlling? The spirit also flailed around and said "STAR WARS" in a very convincing ploy to reassure everyone he was Jeff, and how does a spirit know what a Star Wars is?

It's not like he went into a complex discussion on why Wookies aren't hairless, he just said "Star Wars". I don't think it's far fetched for a spirit to pick up on the surrounding human culture.

It does seem kind of interesting. You'd think this spirit would be known, since it has a fairly distinctive MO, is obviously very dangerous, and has presumably been inside the relatively small area inside the barrier since it was put up (so, at least since Spender reached puberty).

I agree, however, Spender isn't around to ID it, Spender is well established as not telling the kids anything useful, and the spirit hasn't yet directly revealed itself.
