But before you polish up your resume, NASA isn't loosening its standards. You must have at least a bachelor's degree – most astronauts have a master's or a doctorate – in engineering, biological science, physical science or math. You must learn Russian, but be a U.S. citizen. You must know basic physics. Being a medical doctor or a teacher helps. You must have vision that can be corrected to 20/20, no high blood pressure and be between 5 foot 2 inches and 6 foot 3 inches.

Given these tight requirements, NASA will still probably get 3,000 qualified applicants, Kavandi said. The job pays between $64,700 and $141,700.

Did you know I was personally responsible for SA's rise in popularity in the 00's? It's true! Just come to the Farms and find out how! It's the trash kingdom I deserve.

i'll go ahead and put some facts on the table since i taught high school

i started at $38,000/yr with a bachelor's degree (this was 2001)

if i'd had a masters degree it'd have gone to about $45,000/yr

this was about a decade ago but even with cola you're barely approaching average income, let alone the "dick" you get paid for being an astronaut

what you're forgetting is that we're talking about postgrad STEM who're nasa competitive and medical doctors

not some dumbass who paid tuition for their masters

these types of resumes generally go into finance or earn a shitload being specialist physicians

this is the crux of the problem and where the brains are draining to

especially the top ivy grads

these people simply do not go into teaching

e: also lol again if you think a bachelor's will get you into space

no, you can do as well as you want in math/pure science and if you don't have a ph.d. you can forget about ever getting a job much better than lab monkey or high school teacher. i don't care if you're top 10% or bottom 10%, pure science jobs are not easy to find.

nasa is actually one of the biggest employers of pure science college graduates in america and their budget is getting gutted weekly (same with darpa) so it's even worse than it used to be
