If you wanted to jump straight to 7 for the improved grid dungeon crawler or 8 for the overall best experience that's cool, too, I just think of 6 as a starting point. Wiz 1 is the one to play if you want to see what the influential game was, but the barrier to entry is sky high on that one. All of the console versions of wiz 1 that I know of have the English version on them, including the many, many Japanese console versions, so you can pick one and go with it.

So he's got that over most retrogaming Youtubers at least. All I did is put a spare 120GB HDD I had (sucks it didn't come with the offical HDD but I got people on the hunt for me) and format it. It works. Asa far as I am concerned, I call that good and it goes on the shelf display shelf. No point pulling it apart to redo paste or RGH/JTAG as it's not really going to go in service. A bonus is I received 5 Xbox Ones last week and they all work enough for me. Today I got 10 Xbox One Controllers and so far 2 work completely fine minus lack of batteries.

emSparkly posted:As much as I love the 7th gen, I do wanna interrupt to ask: Hot take, Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land for PS2. Not part of the original series & developed by a different company, but it has the Wizardry trappings without being more obtuse than enjoyable (usually). It's streamlined a little in some areas like character building which I think might be good for a first timer. If you'd prefer the more traditional experience, then seconding what Random Stranger said re: 6-8. 6 is cool and probably the best traditional, 7 is great and when they started trying to really shake things up, and 8 is a great and wonderful game that's very different from any other Wizardry.

I just beat Wiz 8 and have played 6 - I skipped 7 for reasons I don't remember. 6 is good but you have to be OK with every single screen looking exactly the same whether you're on a mountain path or in a dungeon, and making a map by hand or using a 3rd party tool like grid cartographer to map. Wizardry 8 is good but the combat is so, so, so slow even with max speed mods for enemy movement animations. The last big fight of the game lasted about 35-40 minutes for me. I'd still recommend both games and will probably play 7 at some point with a 6-8 playthrough with the same party but there are definite caveats to the games if you want to try them out. I'd also recommend the SNES port of Wizardry 1-3 with an english patch, I enjoyed those pretty well when I played them and they turn the wireframe graphics to some pretty nice looking sprites and such.

Going to second the recommendation for the SNES port. I started with 5 on the SNES and then went back to try 1-3 when it got a fan patch and it felt like a very solid adaptation. I also love 8 a lot, but if you're trying to figure out "what's the deal with this Wizardry series they love in Japan" it's not a good place to start since they largely built their games off 1-3 and 5.

I’ve been looking for a cheap flash cart or multi cart for my Nes (UK Mattel version) and I’ve noticed a lot of the listings on websites like AliExpress say they don’t work on that system, is this a thing? As far as I knew there was little to no difference between them…. I can’t find any info when googling

I could have loaded up on a bunch of weird huge controllers, but I'm also dumb enough that I've already had and gotten rid of a lot of my dumber huge controllers. Tired of waiting for Surugaya to have BC PS3 back in stock while their free shipping was a thing, I started checking up on places where I could buy one for a good price and preferably with its OG box. And found this beauty: Just look at it. Ancient box in bloody good condition, all inserts included, even the original ethernet cable is still packed in place. It's a CECHB00 model and its glossy finish is in amazing shape too considering how these things get scratched by air friction alone. Two(!) Sixaxis controllers in pretty good condition for both their age and how lovely these things last. It even came with some games: Though the only surprise here (other than some bootleg Tetris game as the previous owner's single only PS2 title) is the fact there's a 2018 football game on a console that came out in 2006? drat! Preparing to test it out I was very worried that I would gently caress this pretty thing right away and long story told short: I seem to have done just that. I read somewhere that the very early PS3 models do not have a multi voltage power supply so I didn't want to even risk just plugging it in directly in my European 220V 50Hz current mains. No, I had a stepdown transformer from when I first got my Neo Geo AES years ago, this thing below and thought it would be safe: Apparently not. Maybe it's not powerful enough? I plugged its original power cable on the transformer and, let me tell you, it looks weird as hell. There's a tiny, strange green wire built into it, which I have no idea what it is. What the hell is this tiny wire? Anyhow, the console turned on at first and I was ecstatic! Asked me for language, timezone, and if I could see the 1080p HDMI video mode. Just as I finished answering those questions, the system proceeded to shut down. I turned it on again and proceed to answer the same questions only to have the system shut down again on the exact same spot. And then, it did not turn on anymore from here onward! I did not smell any burning components, the system was running pretty cold when it did turn on, but my suspicion is that I fried up something, hopefully just the power supply and none of the vital chips. Please advise? I was planning to get at some point a different, compatible power supply from a later model that would run at lower temps, or maybe even build an external one with a modern PC power supply (saw a guide for this last week), but I'm not sure if this is the right way to proceed from here. It's also pretty annoying I can't tell if I'm even pressing the power button properly since they aren't real buttons that would provide me actual "this got pressed" feedback.
