Waddup I worked in social games for too long and Dungeon Keeper is infamous. FOR BEING BAD.

Social/Mobile monetization requires at least some amount of finesse. Like yeah, everyone knows that you gotta pay real life money for the magic purple pony or for a sack of jewel currency or whatever. But you have to have at least a decent free game base to work with, and do a sort of wink wink when you shove ads in front of their faces. Like make it cute or fun or worth your while sort of thing.

Dungeon Keeper forgot this and EA turned it into a shambling cobbled-together corpse of a 'game' that required ludicrous and greedy amounts of currency to do basically anything, and shoved ads in your faces on basically every other click. No finesse, no shame, no wink wink, just pure unfiltered "GIVE US YOUR MONEY." This, combined with the much-beloved nostalgia of the original game, pissed off so many players that it gained a sort of infamy as the worst of its breed. You can still find lots of articles and blogs basically making GBS threads all over it.

Last I heard years ago, they were still trying to rebrand themselves from the debacle. No clue how they're doing nowadays.

considering these games are designed from the ground up to cost pretty much nothing, it's almost impossible for it to not have worked well for EA.

From what I understand only a minority of people pay for that poo poo but when they do it's like a gambling addiction and they spend tons of money.

there's plenty of stories about people that spent thousands of dollars on mobile poo poo, and those are of course not the major player base, but then you remember that it's not uncommon for someone to spend $50 or so on it over the years, an amount that's vastly higher than the game would have cost were you to pay in advance.

I used to play Puzzles and Dragons and put in a few hundred into the game over a couple years but at the time I didn't buy or play other videogames so it was easy to justify splurging on it.

I met someone who also played and he bragged about putting in over $1000 a month on it and over $30k total since he'd started playing. I didn't actually believe in that level of power-whaling before then so my mind was blown. He was soooooooo incredibly proud of this

Check it out I am a big publisher I will purchase smaller successful studios then force them to do things that are not in their skillset or things that aren't related to why they became successful and then when that doesn't work out I will shut down that studio and farm out the IP as a mobile game.

The reality of it is much funnier.
Game companies are rushing to partner with China mobile ones because its a poo poo load cheaper and easier to get it published in China.
If you are trying to get inside without one, you have to pay a fuckton of bribes just to get the game approved.
But having an internal company smooths the hand greasing a lot.

how does that lawsuit even work, doesn't Pitchford own Gearbox? if he wants to take $12 million for himself he just writes himself a check.

Evidently, he took an advance on the profits of Borderlands through a separate holding company of his, thereby avoiding Gearbox's profit splitting setup. In other words, he took 12 million just for himself, as opposed to dividing it up within the company like he was supposed to.

These charges are all laid against him by a former lawyer and friend of Pitchford's who was ALSO rumored to have stolen like 3 mil from Gearbox? Callender's suit alleges that Pitchford "breached his fiduciary duties by exploiting Gearbox employees and property to fund Pitchford’s private cravings," and one portion of the suit makes two sensational accusations about Pitchford's behavior: that he accidentally left a selection of "underage" pornography on a USB stick at a restaurant, and that he used his company's money to host parties where "adult men have reportedly exposed themselves to minors, to the amusement of Pitchford."

True unpopular opinion Alien Isolation sucked nut, was way too long, spent more time on the annoying Androids than Alien, and had really simplistic stealth mechanics with a boring rear end story and the Alien stopped being scary because it was just an annoying brick wall instead of a threatening presence.

Also lmfao the save system that was supposed to create tension broke the game. It would reset the Alien's AI if you loaded so you could do an objective, save, then load and instead of searching for you the Alien's AI would instead reset and default to its grace period where it would stay hidden and not emerge for about fifteen minutes unless you made too much noise. You could literally avoid the Alien for 90% of the game bar scripted appearances using this trick if you just avoided running and walked everywhere.

Oh yeah, that was the other problem, game was nothing but walking from one objective to another while engaging in stealth gameplay that was more simplistic and less engaging than 1998's Thief.

Your first and third paragraphs aren't wrong, but your second paragraph is dumb as poo poo. Yeah of course you can break a game by repeatedly spamming a technique that doesn't ever arise through organic gameplay. Jesus christ.
