Backbenchers rebel / abstain on minor things all the time and it's nbd but if any of them torpedoed the fledgling government they'd be annihilating their own political career in the process.

Ken Clarke was mentioned in the D&D thread because he's the most prominent pro Europe tory and is looking to retire soon, but he's a proper grandee - had multiple ministerial roles and is basically guaranteed for a peerage at some point - so I'd be very surprised if he could be convinced to break the party he's spent his life serving.

The absolute basic minimum level of loyalty expected for being elected for a party is voting for their Queen's Speech if you are elected as one of their MPs. Not turning up on any other day, nobody cares.

Especially as there will not be a formal deal with the DUP at that point so people won't be able to rebel based on whatever gay bashing laws the ullllllllstermen want

Yeah, it sounds like the DUP concessions are all budgetary things, easing austerity in NI and funding lots of stuff there.

That means no rebellion over social issues but the image of the conservatives inflicting austerity on England while sending money to Ireland is unlikely to please a lot of their backbenchers or voters.

I guess May is thinking that she can't possibly lose seats there no matter what she does so a more expansive policy position is safe.

I was joking about how every time May does something people like her less. There is no chance of her being liked less in norn so it's safe to do things there.

She actually can't commit to increasing spending on NI directly without the Barnett formula kicking in. For every £1 extra allocated to NI, tens more have to be spent elsewhere.

You can fudge this by giving money straight to councils or whatever, but it sounds like what the DUP are focused on is getting funding for health and infrastructure, which would trigger Barnett.

Does the Barnett Formula actually bind Treasury to certain spending ratios? I'd thought it was just convention, so if they really wanted to they could drop it at will.

Of course actually doing so would extract its own cost in political capital, which the government currently doesn't have a surplus of.

Treasury can technically change it any time they wish afaik, but yeah given the position they're in that doesn't seem too likely right now

The apartments are "newly built social housing" in a complex where the price of private homes starts at £1.5m.

There are 13 Scots and 8 Welsh tory MPs though, so discarding Barnett to appease the 10 DUPers is a risky strategic move.

Not actual luxury flats, just luxury-adjacent:

BBC posted:

Sixty-eight social housing flats in Kensington, London, are to be made available to survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire, the government has said.
The one, two and three-bedroom flats are located in two blocks that stand alongside a large luxury development, where private homes go for up to £8.5m.

Nestled off Kensington High Street, and a short distance from Westfield shopping centre, Kensington Row is the perfect example of London's booming real estate market.
It's £700 a week to rent a one-bedroom flat - for that price you get to live in the same borough as Prince William and Simon Cowell.

Builders are beavering away to finish the new blocks for the incoming residents, whilst placards that surround the site promise you can "find yourself in the clouds" after you move in.

You get a true feel for the development from the flats already completed.
On the hottest day of the year so far, the sun reflects off balconies and glass panels onto the tree-lined street and busy main road. The flats all have the luxury finish you would expect of this area - but of course the social housing blocks won't have the same trimmings.

But Kensington Row complex is just over 1.5 miles from Grenfell Tower.
It includes a 24-hour concierge service and a private cinema, the website of developer St Edward says, but it is thought unlikely the new tenants from Grenfell will have access to such facilities.
