I have a request. Ive been listening to a lot of older stuff ranging approx from 95-05 and thinkin how cool it would be to hear some modern day rappers spitting over these older beats on a mixtape or whathaveyou. Might just be a nostalgia thing for me but anyway, closest thing like that that comes to mind is this Christmas freestyle thing waka did where he rapped over a bunch of old classics...

edit: this https://soundcloud.com/wakaflockaflame/classicsvol1

Well he's not new but 50 made a living on rapping on almost every popular beat ever. If you go and download any of his own mixtapes he and the unit probably rapped on most of all of the beats from that era. poo poo, sometimes their version was so good (50 was known for adding a new hook to a song), I wouldn't know that there was an original version till wayyyy after.

Yeah thanks I actually haven't heard many of 50's mixtapes. What are some of the best ones to start on? (I always like that Lil wayne did this same thing, there's got to be like a dozen SQuad tapes in addition to all of his other material)

kinda off topic buit yeah im not sure how they thought this would be a success. to most people, spotify / google play sound just fine so why would they want to switch to a service with higher quality streaming as its only selling point. maybe they could have marketed it as a more niche product to people who do stream music through expensive enough stereos / headphones to care but as is i don't think this product can recover.

because one style and delivery can get very loving tiring. an example that jumps out would be necro. he is one of my favourite producers, and i absolutely love all the beats on one of his more recent albums. however listening to his lyrical content for more than like 2 tracks is exhausting.

The problem is there is no market for exclusive streaming services. So, Jay Z's brand doesn't help the business at all. People who want exclusive music go to shows and those that care about sound quality buy vinyl.

I don't mean to overwhelm you but http://www.datpiff.com/mixtapes-search.php?criteria=50%20cent is a drat compendium of tapes. 50 cent is the future, guess who's back, nobody likes me, power of a dollar, am I my brothers keeper (heavy on lloyd banks if that is your thing), best of gunit radio, gatman and robin (eminem heavy), the rulers back.

That's definitely part of it, but labels often do play a part in it. Also kinda surprised people still checking for necro, dude's production has always been insane but his raps pretty much peaked on i need drugs. i know for the longest time i had hoped he'd work more with people outside of psychological, but by the time he did it seems he's only doing poo poo with dudes older than him. (as an aside, if you haven't checked his early movies they're definitely worth finding if you're a fan. kinda "artsy" stuff almost and at the time made me wonder how much of his "horrorcore" thing was just some elaborate satire or something).

i think the point was to sucker/guilt some people with the whole "artist control" model (even though they've never revealed how they're gonna pay any more than spotify etc), as well as creating a market a la beats by dre headphones. there's tons of ways that doesn't work though (as they're finding out).

Also for dudes who dig instrumental stuff, Prefuse 73 has a couple singles up and an EP coming out near the end of the month. Also supposedly has 2 more things out this year and is producing an album for a mystery rapper. Checked one of the new songs and it's really good. Seems to blend a lot of what he did early with his later (2007+) albums. A lot of the more "synthy" sounds that he started using as he moved away from more traditional drum sounds are such a big part of a lot of rap now. It's kinda funny because at the time it was seen as him moving away from hip-hop stuff, but hip-hop ended up there anyways. Like pretty much any of the Clams Casino type stuff really sounds just like a tweaking of Prefuse's style.

edit-i'll even include the song

Yeah for sure his production has always been top notch. Kinda in a situation like the main Anticon producers (Jel and Alias) where their truly top-notch production got overshadowed and caught up in all the stigma associated with the music their production was often featured on.

Sorry if we already discussed this, but the Wu Tang Clan's 20th anniversary tour is in London in July and I'm wondering whether it's worth it to buy a ticket. I really liked Sour Soul, but aside from Ghostface I haven't kept up with any of their recent stuff so I have no idea whether the others are still worth listening to. Also didn't they release a million dollar album or something last year? That's some Jay Z poo poo.

Bit late on this, but it really depends on who's there. I saw them here in Dublin a few years ago and they were great, but it was mainly because of Meth. He's a hell of a front man and ran the show from start to finish. Without him it wouldn't have been half as good. A year later, I saw Ghostface/Gza/Raekwon and while it was solid, it was missing that spark Meth has.

If it's the full line-up it could be great and Brixton would be an excellent venue for it. They've always been a bit shambolic live in my experience, but when it clicks it can be great. They're playing a mini festival here around the same time, but there's nobody else on the lineup I'm bothered with, but on their own I'd probably go.

Agreed. OG Maco got big cause he was way the gently caress out there and now he seems like he's trying to fight that by putting out a bunch of generic sounding rap. There were a couple tracks off his recent EPs that were solid but nothing on the level of any track off Give Em Hell.
