Man this really doesn't have anything to do with modding but I wish there was a little more going on with companions in Skyrim. Like how in Mass Effect (and plenty of other older CRPGs) you get to know your squad mates the more and more you spend time talking to them, and it makes you feel like they're actual characters travelling with you, fighting alongside you, etc.

In Skyrim all the companions I've met so far have all the personality of an old school FF NPC that stands in one spot and repeats the same phrase over and over again. But they can carry a lot of stuff.

Like what is even the point of marriage and children in Skyrim? It feels akin to picking out drapes to my house(s).

Get Inigo.

You need modded companions if you want some level of actual personality. Of course most modded companions are just generic waifus that have as much individuality as a blowup doll, so you need to find those that have some actual effort put behind them; usually if the description contains "custom voiced" or "fully voiced" and does not prominently features keywords such as "uunp", "cbbe" or "7b", it's worth a look. And if you want some level of Bioware-like party banter, you need companions that can chat with each others. So here's a list:

Each of these characters has at least some scenes with at least two others on the list, so you can create a small traveling party with these dudes.

I can only speak for Inigo and Lucien, but they're both awesome.

Don't bother with... I forget her name. Default look is black hair and anime face, but it's rated highly and has voiced lines. You find her naked in the Whiterun stables and she's inappropriate and everything she says is really bad sexual innuendo. Not worth it, she's loving annoying, not funny, and the creator tried way too hard to make her some sort of weird fantasy drunken waifu.

Sofia and 100% agree, it's not just really bad innuendo, it's hilariously awfully voiced bad innuendo, like a drunken 14 year old pretending to be sexy and really not knowing how.

Besides Apocalypse, I also really like Forgotten Magic Redone. It has 7 class archtypes with 6 spells for each. The spells level with their own exp system and you can pick perks for them. Some are brand new, some are functionally the same as vanilla spells but with some perks to customize them.

I don't want to go too in-depth into the maths involved, but will one option over the other give me the preferred output of making a mage whose gameplay does not consist entirely of backpedaling while spamming Flames at the enemy for minutes at a time? That's the experience I had playing a pure mage for a few levels last time I installed: bandits, draugr, anything really required me to backpedal while shooting flames and it felt overall way less satisfying than just playing a melee character. I'd ideally like to be able to just shoot a few firebolts at something and have it dead before it hits melee with me, like how you can easily do with archery, or maybe use a combination of wards + fireball to soften up groups of enemies. Anything other than just holding down my mouse buttons and waving my mouse around. New spells would be cool, too, but are not necessary. Just powering up something besides Flames.

I use Ordinator + Apoc and it starts off quicker than vanilla and becomes absolutely monstrous if you combine Destro and/or Illusion with Alteration. Alteration makes flesh spells work, make huge magicka pools able to be used as mana shields... you can get lifted up on a pillar if you stand still, etc... Ice destro spells are the hardest ones to start with but at 40+ skill (especially with stuff like Ice Shiv if you sneak or Ice Storm if you don't) and a couple traits, it handles itself very nicely.

Apoc adds tons of strong (damage or functionality) spells too which makes being chain melee'd in the face far less common.

Now if you just dual cast flames at level 20, might still happen :D

I'm surprised you'd never seen the effects of full Unrelenting Force before. It's shown in a lot of Skyrim videos. But yeah, getting the final word of a Shout can be a huge power boost over the second word.

Apocalypse and Lost Grimoire of Skyrim are the two magic mods I usually use. There's a bunch of good spells between the two. Also, SPERG adds scaling to the magic skills; Destruction spells scale in damage with your skill level, Restoration spells scale in healing, and most other schools scale in duration with your skill level, in addition to the normal cost reduction. If you just want the scaling without the rest of SPERG, there are mods for that too, but I'm away from my PC at the moment and don't remember the title offhand.

Ideally the mod in question would do more than just end combat when they yield. Like it would affect your Reputation in some way, perhaps have some sort of bandit faction or whatever.

Not this time! I think one thing every Skyrim player does in the game is Shout someone off the tallest bit of terrain they can find.

This aspect of shouts kind of bother me because yes I know it's not a real RPG but they're just such a no-brainer set of tools to have for *any* character. What archetype doesn't benefit from unrelenting force, whirlwind sprint, invincibility and so on?

And it doesn't take away from any other skill investment because it's just a free set of bonus powers. Not taking them is just artificially limiting yourself. Plus they're just really fun to use.

This annoys me considerably more than it otherwise would because if I have to watch the greybeards slowly shuffling around and mumbling at the floor one more time I'm going to kill myself. But what am I going to do, not go to high hrothgar?
