I'm going with landscape here since it doesn't really fit anywhere else...(ignore the weird artifacts that happen on the 500px thumbnails that happen for some reason) Taking A Break by Paul Frederiksen on 500px

maxmars posted:I like how you made the long exposure work here, but man, those highlights.. Why not to use a grad ND filter for the upper part? I may have a darker exposure for the sky, would have to check, at least on my monitor (calibrated a few weeks ago) it looks pretty good. Made the sky a bit darker in this version, any better?

Then when you combine them you get a mix between the smoothness of a single long-exposure with the water-drop detail of much shorter exposures. I remember it looked pretty good and was a nice change from the typical boring long-exposure shots. I'm going to assume that whoever is doing this is eating a whole shitload of drugs beforehand because otherwise it sounds like the worst possible way to enjoy a waterfall.

Gone with that, thanks for opinions! As for waterfalls I think it is a personal choice on what you want to capture. I tend to prefer a long exposure but that is more of a personal preference. It also depends on the situation and what you are trying to show. I am not sure on combing both fast and long shutter speeds when it comes to the water, seems like a lot of work for something that is going to look heavily edited likely but I won't pass too much judgement until I see an example...

Why wouldn't you just take one long exposure and take a few fast exposures, maybe with a higher iso to get that shutter speed high, and make a simple composite. seems like a lot less effort with the same effect. I doubt you need 50-100 shots and creating a proper HDR is needed.

I remember it looked pretty good and was a nice change from the typical boring long-exposure shots. I'm back, and I definitely did not do this. I can't say I'm too happy with how the pictures turned out. In all the hubbub and excitement I thought the pictures looked decent enough (on the camera's LCD). But now that I'm home I'm seeing so many things I could have at least tried to do better. Oh well, hopefully I'll have more chances in the future. In the meantime, does anyone have tips on how to post-process these? I did what I could but I'm wondering if anyone has another take. I actually kind of dig this. Maybe it seems a little underexposed in the shadows? The grass on the bottom right could probably be brought up a little instead of the dead space. I dig the composition of it though..
