Veev posted:I always pick the knight looking guy because it has enough strength and dex that you can use most weapons you pick up pretty easily. Yeah Vagabond (I.e. the knight), Samurai (similar to vagabond but slightly more emphasis on dex and starts with bow as well), or confessor (sort of a paladin: sword, decent armor, and seems to start with some healing spells) all seem to be pretty new player friendly. The knight in DS3 was probably the friendliest-to-new-players starting class in any souls game. Good armor (not that armor is super helpful in DS3), good shield, good sword that you can use the whole game if you upgrade it, and you are still under 70% weight so you even get medium rolling.

Wasn't DS3 knight fatrolling at the beginning of the game unless you took off the helmet or shield?

Vagabond seems to be the objectively optimal pick because they have the lowest value in the useless(?) Arcane stat at 7. Samurai is a close second with 8 and is interesting because the archetype has never been a starting class before. However, I'm gonna pick Prisoner because Estoc is Bestoc and I can't resist that alluring mask...

You can just buy the mask at the Old Hagmonger lol, you wont survive a second in the Mokey Copse wiht that stat layout

can't decide between Samurai or Prisoner... Also no offense to those PC people but drat this is why I like console only threads, half of it is talking about gfx cards or gpu or whatever. Why not just have a system that just works with the games!!

Hmm my processor doesn't meet the minimum but the odds of this game being processor-limited considering I can run stuff like Deathloop are so low that I'm pretty sure I'll be fine with my i5-6600.

Arcane allegedly scales with some unseen magical powers and changing the name from luck makes me think it might do something interesting. Also resistance to the inevitable zone wide death swamp.

CottonWolf posted:Oh, if that's accurate, that's so cool. I'd love if Arcane made you an item specialist. That's what the Ninjitsu stat does in the Nioh games and it's really cool there. Basically it lets you equip special versions of consumable items that will replenish themselves at checkpoints and you can really build around being a firebomb and shuriken guy or whatever -- sounds a little like how the Cracked Pots will work in Elden Ring and that's great

Nioh 2 did nerf ninjutsu a bit by reducing the amount of each thing you could equip. In 1 you can demolish most bosses with feudal Japanese shotguns (triple throwing knives) and feudal Japanese machine guns (regular throwing knives).

What I want to know is if this game does the same thing that DS3 did where you the game expects you to have something in every armor slot, and if you don't it penalizes you with extra damage for each slot you left empty, regardless of how could your pants are. I want to take my helmet off and bask in my beautiful face.

I haven't seen confirmation of it but I wouldn't be surprised if From threw in a hide helmet option for this one. Armour never mattered too much anyway tho, I don't think a helmet's stats are more powerful than the confidence that comes with being gorgeous.

It's fun to theorycraft characters and builds but for newer players who are expressing worry about making the wrong choice: don't worry. You can brute force your way past 'bad' stat allocations by just getting a few more levels and applying them to the stats you want to buff. And eventually speed runners are going to be beating this game with unleveled starting characters.

These games seem to encourage hoarding. I never want to try to like lightningify a sword or use all my blood cocktails or whatever because if it doesn't work, I'm out those items forever. I wish you got what you used back if you immediately die like an idiot

my recommendation for breaking yourself of the bad habit of "but what if i need it later!" is to actively start using your one of a kind super nuke weapon on a single harmless enemy, for funsies

While my usual archery is "My mish mash knight happen to have the stats needed for a longbow anyways-ooh Dragonrider bow looks neat" idiocy just happy to be able to get attention from a distance. I do hope we have more Dragonrider style bows in the space between "Plain vanilla Longbow" and "Wacky caster stat bow, or Huge premium great arrows greatbow" Though at least with mounted combat, in theory we might be able to do greatbow drivebys?

I'm overanalyzing starting stat allocations like mad just to give my anticipation an outlet - it's something that only matters once the pvp level targets shake out, in any other context a few misplaced levels you just... go get more levels. So far I've concluded that Confessor is probably strictly worse than Prophet as a Faith-focused build, and unless Arcane has more going for it than just being renamed Luck, Bandit is unlikely to be a good first choice either. Every other class has some optimal use case depending on your dump stats (I'm assuming all points sunk into Vigor, Mind and Endurance are useful), which is a nice mixup from DS3 where as someone else said, Knight was by far the premiere choice for almost every build.

I wish you got what you used back if you immediately die like an idiot Never bothered me too much in Dark Souls because the items aren't usually that impactful -- if I can't beat this boss already, using a fire paper probably won't make much of a difference, but I might as well slap one on there for a few extra DPS. Sekiro made it kind of painful though with that consumable that weakened ghost enemies -- while they're definitely possible without it, losing that crutch hurts and the consumable is pretty scarce if you're not intentionally farming it

I still don't understand why those system requirements are so goddamn high. This game is going to run on the PS4. The PS4 is eight years old. Its graphics architecture dates from 2012. It's equipped with the rough equivalent of a GeForce GTX 650. Unless it runs at 360p and 5 FPS or some poo poo, there's a version of Elden Ring that is x86-compatible that runs with far lower system requirements than this. I should be able to run the game (my processor is the real question mark), and my computer is getting a little long in the tooth, there's no question, but a PS4-compatible game having minimum specs like that is asinine. (ofc what gets me is that the minimum reqs and "recommended" specs are barely any different, the 1070 8GB is somewhat better in overall performance but not that much, there's a reason I didn't rush out to upgrade the instant it came out)

yeah it was kind of an odd decision not to make it infinitely purchaseable until as late in the game as they did, alongside the prosthetic tool that utterly neuters ghosts. can't tell if it was intended to be a "ok, now you can go clean up all those ghosts!" sort of breakpoint or just kind of an oversight as it being something unimportant

X was frequently dipping to 50 frames or less (sometimes inexplicably while just walking around) and PS5 to ~50 in action but a bit more stable overall in the CNT.
