What a childish tactic!
Don't you think you should put more thought into your battleplan?!

In hindsight, maybe we should've forced that helicopter to land at our airbase instead of just blow it apart. Assuming it DID have Desantos, he would've been more valuable alive. If it DIDN'T have Desantos, well, who knows who we just killed, but it'll probably bite us in the rear end.

Lessons learned

1) For every op going forward, I need to set hard floors for the missions. This time around, I had it at 12k unless needed by attacking aircraft. A better solution would be to just retire those aircraft and only use stuff capable of firing above AAA range. The losses we incurred, however, remove a fair number of those aircraft.

2) Not enough CAP. I'd underestimated just how hectic things could get and we came very near to paying a heavy price for it.

3) I have to get a lot more specific with what I'll order as targets. We had no reason to be bombing FOBs on this, our final push. We had even less reason to have our frogfoot fire anti-tank missiles into the drat thing.

4) Right now it isn't really practical, but in the future we should have our jammer escort anti-radar strikes closer to the target to give it better OECM coverage.

To address #3, I had a really strict prosecution area but all the planes still wanted to bomb that damned FOB. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but we were threading a needle there.

It's Angola so the public won't care and the UN will probably be a bit miffed at worst.

The new damage model worked splendidly. Two planes took severe damage and limped home while one did not. The SK60's danced with SU-30's. Fly my fragile little butterflies. Fly free!

The Chinese Carrier Group arrived in international waters 8 hours after we completed our ops. The Angolan Government as we knew it is gone. In it's place is the provisional government and they told to the Chinese not to venture into Angolan waters. A quick shuffle happened at the UN and the new ambassador, Joboco, delivered a stirring address to the UN Security Council. The Chinese halted in position right at the boundary. At the same time a pair of Apple registered Zumwalt's shadowed the Chinese but did not fire.

Dos Santos is dead. He departed in his brand new Bell 525 with a thousand pounds of diamonds. Even now the children of Luanda are scattering his bones trying to dig up diamonds. Blood diamonds nevertheless. With his death is the end of the Dos Santos family rule. Now Angola has the potential for a new era.

The Free State has imploded. The council of three, the Triumvirate as they were known, have all abandoned the Free State and left with the $400 million or so that they were supposed to use to hire the Brazilians. I reached out and the Brazilians were never even under retainer. Even now refugees are flooding out of Cabinda and heading to sea as the DRC is sending troops in to restore order. Who ever would have thought that the DRC, of all people, would be restoring order in a country. The experiment that was the Free State was a pyramid scheme built upon the dreams and aspirations of a generation. But in a world of Randian dreams everyone awoke to a nightmare where a Waifu Shrugged.

Mbeke is dead. His command vehicle rolled over a small mine in the outskirts of the city.

I wish I had better news on that front but I received a broadcast from Von Hoff. Once I've gotten over the shock I'll put up a recording. But here is the synopsis. Von Hoff saw another strong man rising in Mbeke, a popular hero who would displace Dos Santos. So he did what he saw fit to do and had an explosive device planted in Mbeke's vehicle. As he said it, "Angola needs not old men or violent men, but statesmen."

I am told that Von Hoff's body was found early this morning, a pistol in his hand.

I don't think anybody ever expected a Good End to an African civil war. Best we can do is not leave it any more hosed up than we found it, and hope the history books at least think we had the right idea.

Statues are for heroes. We're just some guys who got paid to do a dangerous job and then did it.

I say we leave only memories and burning wreckage.

Let's console ourselves with the fact that we probably left the least bad option in charge of Angola.
