That's as much as I understood from googling but how do they technically do it?

They start the ETF at some baseline, usually a ratio of the original instrument, and then they multiply whatever percentage it goes up or down by 3x (not exactly but as close as they can) using derivatives and sometimes debt

Here's a relatively basic graph that kind of shows how it would should look:

Ah, well, you see, you take all but a single bullet out of the chamber and give it a little spin, as the first step.

We should probably effort post a new first post or thread though, it's gotten pretty long in the tooth.

Is there any risk on not being able to fill both sides of the spread or does the broker handle that for you?

Edit: I guess you buy the put first?

Spreads (up to 4? 6? legs) are always executed as an atomic operation by the exchange. The options exchange has a Complex Order Book where the spreads are put up for other to see. This is how you get fills for values inside the Ask/Bid range for the spread: your order gets posted to the COB, a computer laughs, logs "SCRUB" on a dot matrix printer and fills your spread order because you're gifting them money (or you just fill a hole in their risk wall).
If your order can be filled by the normal options prices, the exchange logs "SCRUB" on a laser printer, and fills your order from the non-spread components, for maximum detrimental order execution. Because you should always play the Ask/Bid midpoint when doing spreads.

You can see the COB on some brokers, IIRC IB has the option to check it out. Maybe the exchange site will let you peek at a delayed COB.

TLDR: atomic at the exchange level, up to a number of legs.

Well, lost about $20 over the course of yesterday trading, then about $40 or SEC/FINRA fees on top of it. Not ideal - I need to do better at determining when the market is moving sideways.

Is there any scenario near election time where these stocks don't go up? They may dip before then, but...

Biden wins --> Trump supporters buy guns and ammo to defend the Republic
contested election --> Trump supporters buy guns and ammo to defend the Republic
Trump wins --> riots in major cities --> Trump supporters buy guns and ammo to defend the Republic

Everyone is already buying guns and ammo. They started with the lockdowns and the empty toilet paper shelves and they ramped up with the BLM protests.

I know, those stocks have all run up big this year. Hence my comment about a possible dip before the election. But do you agree that the election is bullish for all of them?

FreelanceSocialist

I can't really see them going up too much more unless congress starts mailing out more stimulus checks. Most of the people buying the guns and ammo are the ones who can least afford it.

At the beginning of the pandemic the gun store had a very diverse demographic clogging the aisles, all eyeballing each other. Was amusing. Ammo all gone.

We haven't had a good chance to use it on each other yet, are you sure people going to buy more?

My neighbor bought like 10k rounds of ammo and told me that even if he doesn't use it all he'll just trade it for stuff he needs when the world ends, I guess? I figure I'll start the opening bid for one wet nap, one packet of ramen, and one surgical mask at 100 rounds of 5.56.

In terms of evil stocks, CoreCivic and GEO are trading at high dividend yield. If these companies can pivot into transitional detention facilities and treatment centers then they could be great long-term buys.

I've been giving iron mountain some glances lately. High seemingly safe dividend. They're growing their data center business since that's the future of their corporate storage business. If they can get some headline traction for the data centers the stock price probably has some upside and coupled with the dividend it could be a good play for the next year-ish. It would also be somewhat of a risk hedge because I mean c'mon it's iron mountain, they're not going under and they're probably not going to see a 100% increase.
