Anyone try the Sierra Nevada Narwhal yet? My local Whole Foods just got it yesterday, so I picked up a 4-pk while trying to find some Bell's This One Goes To 11 (they only had one single left in the back, and another shop only received one case that was already reserved by someone, gah). Really impressed by it.

Frednecksburg has the same distributors as NoVA; Richmond is a different territory altogether (Charlottesville, too).

I've got three bottles left and it doesn't seem like a good candidate for aging, but I might do one bottle aged for kicks.

So I've only ever drank beer a couple times in my life. I decided I didn't like the taste, so I simply didn't drink it. This was when I was a crazy teenager doing a bunch of other drugs though, so, alcohol always seemed boring in comparison. Anyway now I'm 22 and know nothing about beer, and feel its probably a pretty great thing since people love it so much. Plus, socializing with people my age again would probably be a healthy thing. So, someone give me some names to try that are good and won't make me have to force it down purely for the sake of getting use to it. I live in San Francisco, and have some pretty fancy corner stores with tons of alcohol right next door to me, I dont know if that makes a difference as far as local things go.

the Gaffe posted:So I've only ever drank beer a couple times in my life. I decided I didn't like the taste, so I simply didn't drink it. i usually point people in the direction of mild stouts, porters, and wheat beers, as they tend to be the easiest on the palate and are very different in flavor than the American light lagers most people cut their teeth on. if you've got a place that lets you mix-a-six, get some of these: Guinness, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Anderson Valley's Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout and Boont Amber, Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss, Anchor Porter, Ballast Point Black Marlin, any German hefe or Oktoberfest beer, and maybe a SN Pale Ale to see if you like something with a little hop bite. should be easy to get and relatively cheap, then you can refine from there by figuring out which particular styles you dig and using sites like ratebeer.com to find other good examples.

Start low on the "good" list to develop a palate before going into the expensive stuff. I recommend sampler cases/packs from good names. Sam Adams, Lagunitas, etc. I don't know who else might do a sampler on the West Coast, somebody help me out here.

Almost all of them have limited distribution so something available in SF may not make it to NYC and vice versa. As for where to start, the best thing to do in my opinion is to find a shop that sells single bottles and does mixed-six packs. Paying $10-$12 for a sixer with a variety of things is the cheapest way to figure out which styles you like immediately. Also, smaller shops are nice because the people working their will usually more educated. After trying a few things, talk to someone in a shop and they can point you to more.

Ah, thanks for the quick responses. I'll look for those mix packs, and I think the place around the corner sells single bottles anyway. I'll report later about my opinions of random ones.

After talking to the guy who runs one of my favorite beer stores, I've learned that the reason I never see Dogfish Head 120 for sale in bottles out here in California is because they don't label the bottles with the ABV, which apparently isn't allowed if the ABV is over a certain level. Lame.the Gaffe posted:Ah, thanks for the quick responses. I'll look for those mix packs, and I think the place around the corner sells single bottles anyway. I'll report later about my opinions of random ones. Inevitably there's a getting used to the taste phase with enjoying beer. It's pretty rare for someone to just like the "beery" taste right off the bat. I personally think Newcastle Brown is the ultimate gateway beer since it's got enough going on to warm you up to certain flavors but isn't crazy assertive in any direction.

Drinking Maine Brewing's Mean Old Tom and it's a solid stout, though the cocoa and vanilla are very subdued which is either a good thing or a bad thing. So far their beers seem to hit the solid mark, but I don't understand the crazy hype I've seen on reddit's /r/beerporn. They put out very solid beers, but nothing that justifies a ~$5 500ml bottle imo.

I'm going with a friend tomorrow to bottle some beer which he brewed at The Brew Kettle. The bar is supposed to have Kuhnhenn DRIPA and 2010 Bell's Expedition on tap, and I'm looking forward to trying both. Have any of you ever tried the DRIPA? I've never tried a Rice IPA, but it sounds like it could be pretty good.

I went with a friend today and bottled some beer at The Brew Kettle. While there I got to try some 2010 Expedition, and 3f Alpha King (They tapped out of Kuhnhenn DRIPA right before I got there ) I had never tried a RIS aged more than a year previously, and wow, I now understand why people think Stouts are one of the best beers to age. It was one of the most flavorful, smooth, rich beers I've ever had. I wish I could have drank more than one, but at 10.5% abv it has a bit of a kick to it. Alpha King was also delicious, but it didn't seem nearly as good after having the Expedition afterwards. 3F definitely makes some of my favorite beer around, but that's because I like hoppy beers.
