HDR and Wide Color Gamut. I have to admit, I've been impressed with a few 2k upscales because of this. Mad Max Fury Road for one. Kingsman also looks noticeably better than the Blu-ray. It isn't any sharper, but you finally have a color space that matches theater protection. That said, there's a lot of poo poo out there too. Quite a few discs are mastered with elevated black levels. Others, like Oblivion, were slathered with DNR and the resultant UHD disc has less detail than the HD Blu-ray. I really like older titles on the format, but many will be turned off by film grain (which usually leads to the DNR problem.) Labyrinth is one such title. There's so much grain in some scenes that it looks like digital noise, but that's just being faithful to the source.

Yeah I have that Labyrinth disc and while it's accurate as hell, it might not be the one you want to show off a brand spanking new, and expensive, system. I watch a bunch of late 70s/early 80s horror produced on the cheap, so film grain is part and parcel of what to expect in those releases. Better accurate than DNRd.

I'm tearing my hair out here. I've just bought a Hisense 65M7000 and my xbox one s will not play nice. HDR games work fine, the 4k is working fine but trying to play any movie results in audio and the disc menu only, no video. It's not the Xbox, I've had that replaced but it plays fine on other tv's around the house. Googling around and I seem to be the only person on the planet that has this issue. Does anyone have any idea's as to why it's doing this?
|
# ? Dec 18, 2016 08:06 |

First guess would be a HDCP failure for some reason. Does the hisense support hdcp 2.2? It might only be on one HDMI input so try switching them.
|
# ? Dec 18, 2016 09:22 |

Yeah, supports 2.2 through HDMI 3 & 4. I've tried both HDMI ports, different HDMI cables and have tried the xbox on an older 32" 720p tv I have and the UHD disc played fine on that.

So, receivers. The major sites weren't much help in terms of making heads or tails of what is worth getting. I really just need 5.1, HDMI-CEC, and 4k 4:4:4@60hz support, at minimum cost.

The ancient 57" rear projection that's been in the house for almost two decades let out the magic smoke today, now the picture looks like an old 3D image and there was a pretty foul smell coming out of it. This just means we can finally upgrade Right now I'm choosing between: Samsung UN65KS8000 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV or 2016 VIZIO SmartCast™ P-Series™ 65” Class Ultra HD HDR Home Theater Display I would also need a stand and soundbar either way. Kinda leaning to the Vizio and popping a Roku stick in it or something, but this is all new tech to me.

I bought a Sharp LED TV about 4 years ago and recently it started clicking off as soon as I turn it on with no picture at all. I told it to the Sharp TV repair shop in town(apparently there's only one) and they told me the main power board is fried and it would be $500 to fix it. I think the exact model number is Sharp Aquos LC-52LE925UN. Basically my question is, would it be worth it to fix it at this point? Or better yet, can I fix it on the cheap myself at home with a soldering iron? I'm probably going to get a new 4k TV in the summer anyways...

Looks like you might be able to snag a replacement for about $100 on eBay, but you'll have to open the TV to match part numbers. Probably no soldering required, those things usually use connectors.

No built in upscaling, but your tv will do that anyway.

Similarly priced is the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX101 which is also pretty future proofed. Both those receivers look pretty great for the money.

The 4k upscaling on the lower models is pretty much useless anyways since they max out at 30hz for the upscale. 24p native content in a 1080p60 transport upscaled to 4k30 isOHMYGODSTABMEINTHEEYESMAKEITSTOP. I have an x2200w and I can't use the 4k upscaling at all because of that. Not that it matters.

How salty did they get? I know when I got them to price match my W900A with Frys, the manager was acting as if I was personally taking food out of their kid's mouth complaining that Sony might come after them for doing this. Floor guy was pretty stoked though, he was considering doing it himself (it was something like $800 off their price.)

Not salty at all really. I had to wait a bit for a manager because they seemed pretty busy, but when he finally showed up to authorized the price match, he spent all of 5 seconds looking at the price on my phone and performing the authorization before practically running away to go help other customers. Of course I also didn't mention that it was the EPP price. I simply showed them the website pulled up on my phone. If they wanted to pull it up on their computer, I would have just said "it's one of those websites where you need to log into to see the 'real' price" and given them my credentials. I probably would have just stuck with my EPP order if I didn't hear terrible things about how difficult it is to deal with Samsung's customer service return/exchange if your TV shows up broken. Even cancelling my order the same day I placed it felt way more difficult than necessary, so I'm willing to believe the stuff I've heard.

I would hope that the long-term support and software update story would be better on an Xbone S than a dedicated blu-ray player, and the 4K DRM specs are so aggressive and constantly changing that to be able to play discs 3 years from now, software updates will be needed.

# ? Dec 20, 2016 20:52 |

You would hope, but Microsoft has shifted focus back to games and they've said as much. The fact of the matter remains is the XboneS was incapable of playing several UHD titles and they were taking their sweet time to fix them. I still don't know if you can play "Lucy" on a one S. It's also been temperamental about HDR output for UHD discs and a bit glitchy about black level output. It's just not a very polished experience and is very slow to improve. If you want an XboneS for games, then it doesn't necessarily make sense to buy a standalone player. If you want it mostly for movie playback with a very occasional game, then it may not be the correct choice.

I'm not sure Samsung has shaped up but I had a standalone blu ray player in 2006 and the disc compatibility issues and months-long waits for firmware updates were maddening. Then they just stopped supporting it one day.

Yeah I'm particularly unimpressed with the Xbone S disc compatability as I've mentioned a few times. One UHD that won't load full stop and two bluray that crash at the main menu, out of say 12-15 discs I've put through it (all latest releases). I'd probably still go for it over the Samsung, but that is a pretty good deal and hopefully a sign of things to come if the format has any chance of surviving.

I'm so lost looking at TVs. Want a 55-60 inch screen. I'd like 4K and HDR due to more shows on Netflix and games starting to support it and I guess it's good anyway! Everyone online is pointing towards the Samsung KS8000 or whatever, I guess a few things I just don't know. I'm mainly just going to watch Netflix or play PS4. 1. Curved vs flat? I looked at two of the Samsung models in a shop today and the curved seemed kinda nice but not sure of what the benefits are. We are in a room which can get some glare. 2. I like the smart TV stuff as I currently don't have one. I have an iPhone and iPad and a PlayStation 4. I understand Samsung seem to kill it with smart things, what else would work with what I have (or is it irrelevant) or what other brands are just good in the smart space while also being good TVs? 3. The KU7500 vs the KS8500 is a 750 difference in price where I am, what would o get for that price? Finally I'm in Australia (melbourne) where is best to look? Jb hifi? Good guys? Online?

Is the Sceptre brand one of those cheapos that should be avoided? They seem to pop up at Walmart a lot but Wikipedia says the company has been around since 1993. Otherwise it would be used for Netflix and Blu-ray. My budget is $400 or less. I've skimmed some reviews and it seems alright for that?
