There's nothing wrong with this. If you run a Facebook page and you want to advertise to a certain demographic, it's ok to get options.
What if you sell skin treatments that are mostly applicable to whites than to black or Asians? Or if you're selling Ebony magazine, excluding whites and Latinos would get you more of your target demographic

The notion that Uber in London is a mosaic of 30,000 small businesses linked by a common ‘platform’ is to our minds faintly ridiculous.

Ms Bertram [Uber’s regional general manager for the UK] spoke of Uber assisting the drivers to “grow” their businesses, but no driver is in a position to do anything of the kind, unless growing his business simply means spending more hours at the wheel.

Reflecting on the [Uber] case, and on the grimly loyal evidence of Ms Bertram in particular, we cannot help being reminded of Queen Gertrude’s most celebrated line: ‘The lady doth protest too much, methinks’.

The absurdity of these propositions [Uber’s arguments on the contract between drivers and passengers] speaks for itself.

We are satisfied that the the supposed driver/passenger contract is a pure fiction which bears no relation to the real dealings and relationships between the parties.

It is not real to regard Uber as working ‘for’ the drivers ... the only sensible interpretation is that the relationship is the other way around.

Problem is they also let you do that filtering when you are advertising for housing, which skates pretty close to (if not directly into) some civil rights violations.

It's not really the laws of physics that have the spectrum divided the really dumb way that we have it divided. It's just a quirk of history that we gave smaller and worse spectrum every time a new thing was invented because no one knew ahead of time how useful radio would be for how many diffrent things.

Sure, if we could magically reset all RF licenses and divide things up in smarter allocations there could be improvements. It's happening very slowly anyways, like with the digital TV changeover. Look at the allocation now, TV is still the biggest consumer. Other stuff maybe doesn't need as much as it does, but I don't know how or what the aircraft navigation bands do and suspect that even if they could be a lot smaller, replacing all the equipment that uses it would be really expensive.

But the point is that even with the most efficient use possible, there's a hard maximum to how much information you can send through a medium. If we devoted the entire radio frequency to internet data, and everyone wanted to use internet at the same rates they get via current cable/dsl/fiber at home, we'd still need to build a hell of a lot more cell towers.

Wireless radio transmission is just not the optimal method for high-bandwidth transmission that is unique to every person, like internet access. The air is a single wire.

That is really different than calling it a limitation of the laws of physics. The wireless spectrum is really poorly used for the modern world because it wasn't planned ahead. Changing it now all at once is impossible but it's not like the physical properties of radio waves are what are limiting our internet speeds and coverage. Some alien on some other planet has way better internet on their space phone at our exact technology level just because they allocated spectrum better or were more aggressive about reclaiming it.

But that's what Klyith is saying, we can get more bandwidth by re-allocating the spectrum, it's just difficult to do in practice. And we'd still be limited by physics of course - we can get closer to the theoretical limits with more development, but breaking them is as likely as FTL travel. Improving either or both of these ares would let us download cat gifs faster.

Whether they recognize the irony that the Palantir were the original data mining tools used for good, but whose very power inevitably lead to the corruption of its users (and the Palatir into tools by which the powerful could oppress and exploit the weak), is probably lost on them. The kicker is that, like Big Data, the Palantir always told "the truth" but what they showed to any one person could be manipulated in any direction, making them useless for gathering accurate knowledge. Its almost too much.

You shouldn't have stopped there at my post. I acknowledged and addressed in advance a lot of things which you said in your future post.

My post could have been summarized as: "When it comes to communication capacity, fiber is king, and is the high performance option. Wireless will never upset fiber in long distance backbone communication. However, communication is primarily a cost problem. If it weren't, Google Fiber would have been a smashing success and we'd all have fiber connections to every home and apartment building in the US. We already have optical fiber communication--Google Fiber wasn't really inventing any new technology. There may be a role for wireless to play in the 'last mile' connection from communication hubs to homes."

Klyith posted:

You can increase the bandwidth, but there are lots of users that want RF spectrum.

The FCC a couple of months ago opened up a lot of the radio spectrum at millimeter-wave frequencies. http://www.bna.com/fcc-opens-spectrum-n73014444868/ At these carrier frequencies, there is a lot of available bandwidth.

Klyith posted:

You can increase power, but phones work on batteries and most people don't want a big high-gain antenna sticking out the top of their smartphone.

At millimeter wave frequencies, efficient antennas don't have to be very big. At high enough frequencies, they can be manufactured on chip. The increased path loss when compared to UHF frequencies is kind of a big problem, but everyone is talking about electronically steerable antenna arrays which are highly directional and the directional antennas are supposed to help make up for the path loss. Electronically steerable antenna arrays used to be an expensive military technology, but now it is becoming more commonplace and can be found in automotive radar systems in mid-range cars.

Klyith posted:

So the most efficient thing is to have lots and lots of little cell sites, which also can divide their capacity among fewer users. But that sounds pretty expensive. Wired connections can double capacity just by adding another wire.

I wouldn't pretend like you know a lot about how much things cost. Adding another wire can be extremely expensive. This is the reason why cellular communication has exploded in developing countries. It isn't obvious to me whether fiber or wireless will be the prevailing technology to connect the 'last mile' from communication hubs to homes in the US.

A similar sort of system already exists in many third world countries, where vans and small buses that are a blend of bus and taxi are used on somewhat impromptu routes. These systems are much less efficient than the transit systems that exist in the first world with with set routes.

This system is basically the utopian vision for autonomous transit that Musk and others have described. From what I've read there seems to be a great deal of skepticism from transit experts toward this sort of system, mostly focusing on the fact that small buses that aren't on set routes will never be as efficient as what we have now, which is large buses on set routes. I suspect this is another one of those situations where SV is thinking that they're outsiders disrupting the closeminded establishment, but in reality they've put absolutely zero thought into the problem and are just hand waving about efficiencies from routing using big data.
