Surprised "Man with the Machine Gun" hasn't been mentioned. I never cared for the original FFVIII version but the orchestra version is amazing.

And if we're getting into (normal) boss music, it's a tough choice for me between IV, VII and XIII. Until I replayed XIII I had forgotten how amazing Saber's Edge is.

Ehhhhhhh? I dunno, something about FFVIII's soundtrack just feels right with the midi synthesizers. That's a fine remix, but it doesn't feel like the same song at all. The orchestral mix makes it seem like an upbeat flighty song, and not a very good battle theme. That said, there are some really good remixes of the background music.

Yeah, my thoughts as well. It starts off very slow and builds to the good part but in a game where the battle system encourages you to win as fast as possible, that seems a bit dumb.

FF2 still has my favorite normal battle theme in an FF game.

It's my favorite too, and I love the FFXIV remix as well.

I still need to play through the DQ series.

For 1-3 the SFC versions or the mobile versions are the way to go. Mobile for DQ4-6 as well then 3DS for DQ7 unless you have a shitload of free time, like to explore everything constantly (or use guides), and really want a long and old school JRPG experience.

That's amazing. I'm glad someone at SE remembers FF2 exists. Whatever its other problems, the soundtrack had some great songs.

Thanks for the link. If I wasn't so against MMOs, I would be tempted to play FFXIV now. (I don't like multiplayer of any kind)

That is a pretty good remix, although the Garden theme has always been a highlight of the VIII soundtrack.

Well I don't have a 3DS and I'm not likely to get one unless I can order that kit that makes them playable on TVs/monitors. I was thinking of doing that anyway because some people were telling me how good SMTIV is.

Definitely listen to the regular theme before you listen to the Hard version, not just because Gubal's regular theme is one of the best tracks in the game, but also it gives the Hard version a little more context (as much as context can be given to a piece of music).

That's an unlockable track in Smash Wii U. It plays on Gaur Plains though, so it's always gonna be second fiddle to You Will Know Our Names.

I'm still disappointed that the Cloud DLC didn't include more music than Let the Battles Begin and those Who Fight Further. There's so many good picks no matter how you limit the pool!

It's kind of wrapped up in flowery language and unorthodox sentence structure, and what happened is really only implied by the lyrics:

So still this broken melody,
And therewith shoulder thee
One last step, only leaving
An empty hearth down by the sea.

Kill your mom (the broken melody) and then take one more step over the cliff to kill yourself. The first half of the song gives it a lot more context though.

Xeno soundtracks are pretty much always amazing. With Mitsuda or Kajiura, how could they be anything less than amazing? I could give the same advice as you for Xenogears or Xenosaga Episode III.

It's too bad you're not using some kind of device connected to a magical Information Superhighway that could answer this question, better just wait until you've literally finished a game to watch the credits. :what:

Hint: the composer likely got their job on the FFXV OST from their excellent work on Xenoblade.

Since FF15 is out and apparently good I want to make it feel better about its project management mishaps by reminding the world that XCX wrapped its soundtrack production without any no-vocals mixes so important story cutscenes have cheesey music lyrics drowning out in game dialog.

XCX had a lot of needless complexity. Sure I get that you can spend a bunch of time to set up lots of augments and soul voices in a symbiotic way to toggle murdergod mode but goddamn, it'd be nice if you'd make large enemies, including a late/end game boss, not just send you flying like a field goal attempt because they got close to you. People who did skell combat fights on foot are weird and if it wasn't for the "you get sent flying by large enemy movement (and can do the same to small enemies with your skell)" then I could at least see the appeal due to its challenge. Skell combat was pretty broken in general though. I think it took more time to go from 28-30 than it took to go from 30-40 because you go buy an Amadusias and just back attack beam scythe enemies a dozen levels above you and then finish them off a couple seconds later. It was a good game but XC was better in just about every way. Especially the music. And the Nopon.

World Tyrants having co-op is the biggest tease though. The next game just needs to allow co-op, either a drop in/out setup along the lines of games like Crackdown and Saint's Row or a more party structured freeform system like in Dragon Quest 9 and the leader can light up their bat signal when they need you to stop doing whatever you're doing and help them.
