What he's saying makes sense, he's just terrible at communicating. (Judging by the rest of his timeline, he's one of those "well I know what I said" guys.) Here's the context that helped me work it out: https://twitter.com/markallanbovair/status/1027191866876456960 So in his view, this person with the $100,000 income isn't saving enough (the Roth IRA and 401(k) contributions only add up to 24%), and still only has ~$4,000 a month for living expenses like rent/mortgage, food, car payments, etc., which isn't a lot of money to someone living in a large city. He's trying to get across that people living in Manhattan, San Francisco, etc. will find it hard to save as much as he thinks they should, because they'll have to lower their 401(k) and IRA investments just in order to put food on the table. Help I have a six figure salary and I don't know how to feed my family! If only some noble hero would perhaps grant me some tax cuts I would be able to fully stock the fridge in the boat house. Alas! Mine is the plight of the everyman, destined to toil away in a corner office for 3 hours a day in between relentless tee times all while harboring a growing suspicion that my wife is having relations with my gardener. Woe betides me (but not as much as woe betide that gardener once I call ICE).
