I was impatient and pulled the trigger on a Chromecast. I have a Roku, as well so it seemed like the Firestick overlapped with that too much.

Didn't really matter because I just listened to Spotify all night, which my receiver supports natively. :downs:

Probably the right choice. If you want to do most of the fun stuff with the Fire TV you really need the full box instead of the Stick anyway.

I got my Stick for dirt cheap during that promo period so I don't feel bad about not using it. I got the Jackbox for it though so I just think of it as another board game that happens to plug into a TV.

Man, I'm about to give up on Plex for the Stick. It's such a stuttery piece of poo poo. I can't get through one movie or TV episode without it freezing up and having to go back to the Plex menu. And what really kills me is it works perfectly on every other platform except the Stick.

Back to Kodi it is!

I got the Stick a few days ago and have been using Plex until I get around to putting Kodi on it. I've watched two 1 hour TV shows and just tested out a movie for about 5 min and haven't had any problems. Everything is 1080. Could have just been lucky so far since I've only used it for a whole 2 hours.

Also ordered 2 fire TV boxes but they wont be in stock for about a week according to amazon.

I'm having issues with my Fire TV being really slow connection speed wise. Everything buffers every 3s for about 15s. My Chromecasts work fine on the same TV connected to the same network.

It’s been 4 months since the Fire TV received a software update that added new functionality. The last two updates have consisted only of bug fixes. Well, the drought of new Fire TV features is about to come to an end. My sources at Amazon tell me the next Fire TV software update, dubbed the “connectivity” update, should begin rolling out to select devices tomorrow, March 24. As always, the update will first begin arriving on a small subset of devices before ramping up and making its way to all Fire TVs.

This update is expected to add support for USB storage expansion, an item that has long been at the top of the list of most requested features. Additionally we’re expecting to get expanded bluetooth capabilities that should allow Fire TV owners to natively connect bluetooth headphones, speakers, and keyboards to their devices.

I’m told the timeframe for this update is not set in stone and may change due to the complexity of these new features. Amazon has not been shy to halt a software update’s deployment in the past. If you recall, the 51.1.1.0 update began rolling in June of last year only to be stopped and replaced by a new version two weeks later. Don’t be surprised if that ends up happening with this new update.

USB drive support would be huge for me. I've been going round and round over the best setup to host and stream files to Kodi on the FireTV. Currently I've got an external drive connected through a Time Capsule that is then connected to our FIOS router. Which is all much more convoluted than it needs to be. I've been waffling over transitioning everything over to a basic NAS or something a bit more robust and dedicated, but if I can just connect the external directly to the FireTV, I would be stoked.

USB drive support is the only feature missing that I care about, it will let me throw all of my roms onto a thumb drive or something. I've really wanted a cheap all in one unit for Netflix/Kodi/emulators for awhile now.

Amazon released a press release.

quote:

Amazon today announced new features are coming to the best-selling Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. These features will be delivered as part of a free, over-the-air software update in the coming weeks. Amazon also announced today that Fire TV Stick is now available in the UK and Germany, joining the #1-selling streaming media box, Amazon Fire TV.

“Customer response to Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick has been overwhelming—we’ve been working hard to build more of both as quickly as possible, and we’re excited to be adding new features we think customers will love,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President, Amazon Devices. “In the UK and Germany, Fire TV is already the best-selling streaming media box on Amazon, and we’re thrilled to be bringing our fastest-selling Amazon device ever—Fire TV Stick—to the UK and Germany. We think millions of customers in the UK and Germany are going to love this product.”

New features coming as part of the free, over-the-air software update include:
• Expandable USB storage on Amazon Fire TV—You can now use a connected USB mass storage device to expand your Fire TV storage for downloaded apps and games—this enables you to have more games downloaded for easy access.
• Connect to your hotel or dorm room Wi-Fi with captive portal support out of the box—Take your favorite movies, TV shows, games, and more with you away from home—Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are the first streaming media devices to enable you to connect to Wi-Fi that requires web authentication—this includes Wi-Fi at most major hotels, as well as some universities.
• Private listening on Fire TV—Enjoy favorite movies and TV shows after the kids go to sleep, without worrying about waking them up. Support for wireless Bluetooth headphones to Fire TV lets you listen to your movie, TV show, or music without bothering others in your household.
• Browse and search Prime Playlists—Prime members can now take advantage of hand-crafted Prime Music playlists directly from Fire TV and Fire TV Stick—there are hundreds of expertly curated Prime Playlists to choose from based on your mood, activity or even artist or decade of choice.
• Hidden PIN entry—With the new PIN entry screen that hides the numbers selected, you can now make sure your kids (or freeloading friends) can’t see your device PIN as you enter it on-screen to confirm a purchase on Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.
• New shortcuts—Quickly put your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick to sleep or enable display mirroring by pressing and holding the Home button on your remote.

Agreed. Only issue with the FireTV is just am android issue and that is no framerate switching from 60. I can deal with that and usually don't notice it too much.

Currently, I have Plex running on my iMac with a 5TB USB External plugged into it having CouchPotato and Sickbeard drop everything onto it. I have two FireTVs and a Roku stick (aside from tablets/phones which are used irregularly) to play Netflix/Plex on the various TVs. I think my only gap would be getting the USB content hooked up to one of the FireTVs to the Roku.

Should I expect any performance issues with running 1080p movies hosted on one of the FireTVs to another FireTV as long are both hardwired?

Time to blow up hotel wifi with Netflix streaming. No more tethering to my phone!

Yes it was possible with a sideloaded browser, bluetooth KB/mouse/etc. But a hassle.

Just sign right in and burn bandwidth. The Firestick just got a lot more logical for travel!

I had this happen on my big fire quite often, but it seems to have stopped recently so I don't know whether a Amazon update or a Netflix update fixed it.

I think the bigger issue is getting a hotel TV that let's you plug something into the HDMI port, or doesn't have a locked down remote. I guess if you're already packing the Fire TV, you have room in your bag for a $5 universal remote.

Every HDMI port I've tried works fine. I'm in hotels every week. Also, Note 4 IR blaster let's you in to the TV menu system just fine. :smuggo:

The Problem Solver.
Do you bring a laptop with you to these hotels? I'm not trying to be a smartass at all, but I'm wondering why you couldn't just bring along an HDMI cable and plug your laptop into the hotel tv and not have to screw with anything else. I could see if you want to watch something while working on your laptop but I was curious if you had other reasons. I know there's a ton of stuff that only works or works best on a streaming device vs a straight up laptop with a browser but I can't think of many that would impact hotel life.

However I can see how super easy it would be to throw a Roku/Fire/etc stick in a bag (or even a full blown Roku 3 since it's so small) and leave it there until you needed it without ever having to mess with the laptop/tablet/phone/other option.

Random question too since I only use a Roku and an HTPC. Is there anything any streaming device can do to change regions in Netflix? (i.e. using a browser plugin in Chrome/Firefox to make it look like I'm in the UK and can watch stuff not licensed in American yet)

I think the biggest issue is going to be how slow the hotel wifi is. The past few I've been to have been awful. I always end up tethering to my phone (not letting go of my ATT unlimited data).

Also if BYOStreamingStick at hotels becomes a frequent thing then they will probably start throttling that traffic to keep things usable.

aftv posted:

The big question everyone always seems to have when a new Fire TV update rolls around is if it negatively affects Kodi in any way. You’ll be happy to hear that several people who were lucky enough to be among the first to receive the new update have chimed in to let us know that Kodi is still fully functional. You can still sideload and launch Kodi just like before. Even better is that Kodi can fully access and play media files stored on an attached USB drive (as reported by Peter, Hitcher, and Cabe). Additionally, it appears that you can move Kodi itself onto an attached USB drive, but Kodi’s data, where the large thumbnail directory is stored, does not get moved to the USB drive. Keeping the thumbnails on the Fire TV’s internal storage is ideal for smooth scrolling through your Kodi library, however it’s likely possible to move the thumbnails to USB storage as well by editing Kodi’s advanced settings. I’ll look into this further and create a guide if it is in fact possible.
