They predicted a G4/KP7 equivalent due to the smaller nature of the multiple CMEs but it seems we got a pretty good hit after all. G5/KP9 The harder the hit the further south the auroras go in latitude, so if this is the strongest hit in 20 years there should be aurora as far south as Tennessee potentially in the US. I guess there being six had a cumulative effect Rectal Death Alert has issued a correction as of 01:28 on May 11, 2024 |

A Carrington event is better for the biosphere than nukes or plagues so I think we can all be rooting for the sun right now. You can do this big guy!!!

Okay, red auroras in the florida keys is a pretty interesting hit. Definitely in the once-in-(decades) territory. https://x.com/StormChaserLo/status/1789132924450664708 https://x.com/MikeTheiss/status/1789131514615054564 Here is a study on historical solar storms. The last maximum was oddly weak and this one is looking to be oddly strong. https://www.swsc-journal.org/articles/swsc/full_html/2021/01/swsc200106/swsc200106.html quote:First, we present a timeline and tabular description for the great auroral storms of the last 500 years as an example for space climate. The graphical summary for these 14 events suggests that they occur about every 40–60 years, although the distribution of such events is far from even. One outstanding event in 1770 may qualify as a one-in-500-year auroral event, based on duration. Additionally, we present two examples that describe space weather storms using solar, geospace and effects categories. The first of these is for the prolonged storm sequence of late January 1938 that produced low-latitude auroras and space weather impacts on mature technology (telegraphs) and on high frequency radio communication for aviation, which was a developing technology. To illustrate storm effects in the space-age, we produce a detailed timeline for the strong December 2006 geomagnetic storm that impacted numerous space-based technologies for monitoring space weather and for communication and navigation. I'm curious to see how things like starlink respond to this. Rectal Death Alert has issued a correction as of 07:23 on May 11, 2024 |

I've never seen the northern lights before and I'm definitely in a heavily light polluted area, but it was noticeable if you knew to look. I heard somewhere that it shows up better through a camera and that is definitely true, the naked eye was "oh yeah I can see that now that I'm looking at it," but even just pointing my phone at it I could see a lot more color and detail That was a neat experience, I'm glad I got to get a taste of that

Saw some in East Vancouver last night. It was dim but it was strong enough to make it through all of the pollution.

This storm is rare in intensity making the lights brighter and the sunspot was unusual in eruption so the impacts are numerous and spread out over time) The aurora might actually continue throughout the weekend. The 6 consecutive coronal mass ejections from that large sunspot have not yet all arrived. Whatever portion of the total hit us yesterday is what sparked the red lights in Florida with the G5 storm, which has subsided to G4 and would disappear entirely soon, but we are expecting more impacts today. Right now really. If the atmosphere is already excited from the G4 then there is a high likelihood that at least the same aurora from last night are back again tonight so if anyone is interested it might be worth it to attempt to see them without filtering if they are strong in your area and you are able to do so. This solar maximum might make this a more regular occurrence but as of right now this is a pretty rare event. Not sure if it will continue as that is entirely up to however much of the total eruption remains and how spaced out the 6 total impacts are. Last night could have been the peak.
