Not necessarily. Some of the excess heat might go to the deeper ocean (afaik we don't have a good grasp on what is happening down there), some might be vented into space.

I like how the red line just carves its way up and up and above precious records through the year until you hit about July-August time, where it appears to settle on how far above the average it wants to be. Then it just comfortably coasts along, fluctuating but mostly keeping its distance right through the end of the year and then carries that on through the start of this one. It's impressively consistently keeping so far above the norm you lose track of where "average" is.

Wait. Not "like", I think I mean the other thing.
