Yeah, the AM radio demographic is old and conservative, who I thought would be important buyers for Ford. AM radio regular usage may be dying, but I just don't understand what costs they're saving by dropping it.

There’s still a disconnect in how you are understanding the decision from Ford though IMO. The point all of the above posts have been making is not that AM radio demographic is old and conservative, it’s that it’s so old and conservative it is nearing extinction. If the number of people who purchase a car and want to use its AM radio is small enough, removing the part numbers will save the manufacturer real money. It could be well more than $1 per car, I don’t know.

If the dollar profit created by purchasers who need an AM radio becomes small enough, the dollars per year from all cars sold to people who care about AM radio may not be enough to pay the annual salary of the manufacturer employees that need to coordinate the $1 AM radio part numbers, design it into the infotainment, test it, etc.

They’d much rather pay people to work on features that sell cars, any cars, and AM radio no longer does.

So, it's not just the AM radio which is probably cents in the BOM. There's significant engineering effort that would go into making a functional AM radio on an electric vehicle due to the shielding and filtering required to keep the car's systems from interfering with the signal.

At this point, you have to decide if it's worth keeping through a legislative route, requiring cars to keep it around via regulations. Otherwise it's going away because it is not something that makes financial sense to develop.

I guess that my question then is why AM radios worked in the early / cheap EVs and are in the older, non-updated ones. The Nissan Leaf has AM radio, the Tesla Model S/X and early 3s had AM radio, all the Korean EVs and PHEVs have AM radio. Is there something that makes newer EVs electrically noisier?

Because it's not impossible. It just costs more (doesn't matter if those EVs were 'cheap' as that's irrelevant when we are talking about overall vehicle profits.)

It's the same thing about eliminating dipsticks and other cost optimizations. It costs more to put AM radio on electric vehicles and it's not an in-demand feature so they know they can remove it and pocket the money without affecting a statistically measurable amount of sales.

I get ya, but, only on that matte paint/chrome trim spec. The blacked out version looks way better.

The extra window not having chrome trim like the larger window opening is what does it.

Edit: PYF extra C pillar window. Sierra done, so how about a VS Statesman/Caprice:

They probably learned that it's not worth the time successor models. Literally everything affects AM and at least for some OEMs, a significant amount of testing is only on complete cars which is when you find out there's a tiny detectable hum at a single frequency that mandates part changes right when you want to be settling in for launch. PCBs and/or components are exactly what you don't want to be sourcing or changing on a tight schedule and god forbid the design update doesn't fix it or makes another tiny buzz.

Another new GR product the US can't have:

A....tray?

Indeed:

This is what AU/NZ are getting as the "Dakar inspired" Hilux GR Sport - slightly different to what South Africa, Japan and Thailand get already with the same name, with a bit more done to it.

https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2023-hilux-gr-sport-revealed-hilux-halo-coming-to-aus-this-year

quote:

Under the bonnet is the familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder making 165kW of power at 3000rpm and 550Nm of torque at 2800rpm – increases of 15kW and 50Nm over a normal ’Lux.

The six-speed automatic transmission has been re-tuned with a stronger torque converter lock-up, sportier calibration, and the addition of paddle shifters. The HiLux retains its selectable 4WD system with low-range transfer case and locking rear differential.

To enhance its off-road capability Toyota has widened the GR Sport’s front track by 140mm and rear track 155mm compared to a regular HiLux.

This means redesigned suspension wishbones and heavier duty rear axle are needed. There are also satin black overfenders fitted to the HiLux GR Sport to cover the new 17-inch alloy wheels shod in 265/65 R17 Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tyres.

Keeping the rubber in contact with terrain are new monotube dampers with more rebound and compression control as well as better heat management, along with stiffer front coil springs.

The GR HiLux boasts a 30-degree approach angle and 26-degree departure angle thanks to re-profiled front and rear bumpers. There is also a skid plate beneath the engine, rock sliders and red recovery points for enhanced off-road protection.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/131708869/pricing-revealed-for-the-most-powerful-toyota-hilux-yet

quote:

Toyota New Zealand has confirmed pricing for its new Hilux GR Sport – the most agro, capable, and powerful Hilux the brand has produced to date.

The performance pick-up will be priced from NZ$74,990. Whilst that price does not include Clean Car Discount fees (which are expected to be the same or higher than the Hilux SR5 Cruiser’s $3,795), it does include full on-road costs as part of the Japanese manufacturer’s local haggle free ‘drive happy’ sales structure.

As has been widely tipped, the Hilux GR Sport has undercut its nearest theoretical rival, the NZ$92,990 Ford Ranger Raptor, by a wide margin of $18,990 (Ford’s pricing does not include on-roads or Clean Car Discount fees).

The price differential won’t surprise most given that the pair of pick-ups – despite looking somewhat similar and having comparable gravel-bashing aspirations – aren’t necessarily direct rivals.
(snip)
Although the GR Sport’s changes mean more power and torque from Toyota’s 2.8, it is not a threat to the 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 in the Ford Ranger Raptor, with its 292kW and 583Nm.

To clarify pricing: Hilux is US$47.2k including GST, including On Road Costs but not 'Clean Car Tax'. Raptor Ranger is US$58.6k including GST, not including ORC, not including CCT.

NZ Car buying terms Cliff Notes:
GST: 15% on everything.
ORC: first time costs like registration, plates, inspection, dealer poo poo, usually about NZ$600ish.
CCT: Clean Car Tax, or "Ute Tax" if you're a hardworking tradie or farmer or a politician courting populist votes. Sliding tax based on CO2 emissions - vehicles over 192g CO2 pay a tax which directly funds a cash rebate for newly registered EV and hybrid buyers (under 146g CO2). So the Hilux will get hit with around $NZ3800 of CCT, while the buyer of an NZ$80k EV (the max price eligible for rebate, base Tesla Model 3 is priced to hit that point) get about NZ$8300k cash monies back from the govt. Applies to freshly imported used cars too. Buying a used Toyota Aqua/Prius C fresh off the boat from Japan for about NZ$12k gets you about $1500ish back, so it's not just for rich people buying brand new Teslas.

I mention freshly imported used cars from Japan because that's where we get a huge amount of our fleet and Aqua's for about $10-12k is about the cheapest hybrid you can buy and still get a CCT rebate, just illustrating the financials in our market.
