You can sort of see the steering wheel working itself loose before coming out altogether. Also, you can see the cross bolt still stuck in the steering wheel just past the end of where the steering wheel broke off, so it's likely a failure in the steering column, if that's the right term, rather than an intentional release.

It's a pretty cool truck, but throwing a shiny, modern engine in that truck and calling it a rat rod is kind of a stretch. Tell him to finish his project truck. Rat rods are dead anyway. No genre in American car culture has become as played out as fast as rat rods....even vans had a longer run. Seizure Meat fucked around with this message at 12:41 on Jun 23, 2011 |

VikingSkull posted:No genre in American car culture has become as played out as fast as rat rods....even vans had a longer run. It's really sad, because an actual rat rod in the original sense of the term, with the slapped-on random paint, "whatever fits goes" approach to repairs etc. is pretty cool. "Rat"-styled hot rods that are specifically styled to mimic the aesthetic are dumb.

If that truck had a rusty nailhead in it and matching patina doors it would totally rule. As it is now, if it was alone in a parking lot it's worth a look, if it's in a street rod show like Goodguys you wouldn't even notice it because half the cars look like that. The legit doorknobs are kinda hilarious though. Rat rods, or the original definition of it, are supposed to look like a 50's hot rod dragged out of a barn in the modern day. They were never supposed to be a car built with whatever you had laying around. You need period correct speed parts, period correct custom touches to the body, all covered with patina. Not a modern engine in an old car with hardware store parts just because. Seizure Meat fucked around with this message at 13:57 on Jun 23, 2011 |

I always thought rat rods were a "function over form" concept, as a counterpoint to the highly-polished "custom" hot rods that are hardly ever driven anywhere. A throwback to the original post-war rods, stripped down and built to go fast, who cares how it looks kind of thing. No bones about being period-correct, well thought out or even pretty, just meant to get on the road and go fast.

Unfortunatly a case of physics wins over good design - the Smart is in reality quite good. Just not when king hit with something three times it's own weight Another 5star small car meets much bigger car. Physics wins again over good design http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pVF1Wr7GLQ&NR=1

It also raises the question of why a 2.5ton+ behemoth like that is even necessary and why it can be driven with only a normal driver's license. I believe Audi revised the design after the crash test, since it was discovered that parts of the Q7 acted almost like spears in a collision like that, which was especially dangerous in collisions with small cars.

It's also not helping the Smart any that it has basically nothing but a passenger compartment. There are no crumple zones to speak of, except the A pillars it seems.
