The only things i can remember about this movie from when I saw it was a child are giant lizard people, mario jumping on some moving metal platforms in some dystopia, and Dennis Hopper.

Only just starting to watch the riff and it is already extremely good.

Does anyone have a quick summary as to how this movie was created and became so incredibly awful?

Basically different visions between the directors (who wanted a weird Blade Runner post-apocalyptic adult film) and everyone else.

"One action-packed treatment seemed inspired by Die Hard. The script itself contained a scene in which Bruce Willis could make a cameo, scurrying through the air ducts above King Koopa’s office. Another script featured Mad Max-style death races."

I think the most amazing thing in the entire thing is that Nintendo just handed over the rights and was like 'welp go for it!'

Good reading though. The entire thing just sounded like a perfect storm of terrible things.

I think this'll keep them from doing The Wizard for awhile :(

This was really incomprehensible. I get mammals suck but, besides laziness, why were all the mushroom kingdom people humans? They hate people but want to be them?

I'm quite disappointed by the lack of accuracy in the car-based jokes in Cyborg Cop 2.

This car:

is clearly a 5-door Ford Sierra Mk1 and not a Festiva.

But other than that, Cyborg Cop 2 was great riff, the movie is sufficiently cheesy and nonsensical that everything works out. Really looking forward to seeing Super Mario Bros now.

Wellllllll......basically when during the climax Daniella is back on Earth and shouts "Look!" while pointing upwards...Koopa's tower phases in...overtop of the World Trade Center...and there's a hint of an effect showing the actual towers collapsing downwards...

Basically, Super Mario Brothers called 9/11.

I was wondering if they were going to leave that in. Normally I hate it when movies get edited but, eh, it's so short and inconsequential to the movie that I can understand the edit.

No poo poo! :) That's because nice photos of the 5 door Sierra with the correct grille were more difficult to find. Here's one, except for the number of doors you can see that it's still the same model of car:

Yeah, like a single "... well this is awkward" or something would've been better than editing it out.

Otherwise, yeah, SMB is easily one of my top 5 VODs now.

A couple of years ago there was an article in Game Informer that talked about the making of the SMB movie and apparently the whole situation was hosed on multiple levels. Stuff like nobody on the production end knowing or caring about anything Mario Bros as well as Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo spending the entire time drunk.

Real question, would anybody actually pass up the opportunity to sit around and get drunk with Bob Hoskins? Dude's awesome, it'd be way fun.

I had forgotten a lot of details about this movie, probably because most of them didn't have any substantial payoff. Like, why was King Koopa a hypochondriac? Was there a draft of the script where Mario threw a used tissue at him?

Fun riff, here's hoping they can get the rights to Double Dragon or Street Fighter.

Cheap as hell since 1971.
So I used a professional contact to get a hold of a copy of an educational short made by the people who did Setting Up a Room. Not the block one, sadly; this one is called Dramatic Play: An Integrative Process for Learning. As you might expect from the title, it's about children play-acting: playing house, etc.

It is also 32 minutes long. And it's not as polished as Setting Up A Room. And the last three minutes or so are... well, can you imagine a production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf performed by 5 year olds?

Youtube upload impending. I'm not certain it's funny, but it's sure something.

The twist is that all those kids playing "house" with the blonde girl were actually hostages. I think the short would work with some editing for pacing reasons but then again Setting up a Room was really great and I don't think we were spared a minute of that.

Why would that make it less legit? It's obviously Nat Geo's April Fool's joke. Having a bunch of people mocking their shows for the day seems like the joke itself.

I was moreso trying to determine if this was leading into anything more than just an April Fool's Day special. I guess that's still up in the air, though.

I have to say, if that movie contained a shot for shot remake of the bank robbery from Heat about halfway through, it would not only make the whole thing worth it, it also wouldn't even feel particularly out of place.

I honestly can't imagine anything that would feel "in place" in this movie.

Bobulus
Jan 28, 2007

It's very clear that the movie suffers from being re-written too many times. I can only assume some early version of the script, for example, showed Koopa seizing power in a military coup, since, in the first few minutes of the movie when he's pursuing the fleeing Princess Egg, he's got this military general outfit on that's never seen again. And doesn't thematically match at all with the weird 'it's a living!' VGA-graphics dinosaurs that also start the movie.

I remember seeing this as a nine year old in the theaters. I can't recall if I thought it was good or bad, but I do remember thinking the jump-boots were awesome.

Step right up and greet the Mets
This was my first time watching the SMB movie and left me scratching my head how a movie could be butchered so badly. I read this Game Informer article published last year on the disastrous production and found a few gems:
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/10/10/mario-s-film-folly-the-true-story-behind-hollywood-s-biggest-gaming-blunder.aspx

quote:

Filming was scheduled to last 10 weeks, but it slowly stretched into 15. Everyone had different ways of dealing with the frustrating production schedule. John Leguizamo, who had been cast as Luigi, started drinking. In his biography, Leguizamo describes how he started doing shots of scotch with Hoskins between scenes. During a scene in which Leguizamo was driving a van, the actor was reportedly drunk and braked too hard, causing the sliding door to smash shut on Hoskins’ hand. During certain sequences of the film, Hoskins can briefly be seen wearing a pink cast

quote:

The end of Super Mario Bros. was a hack job. Morton and Jankel had hoped to film an epic battle sequence on the Brooklyn Bridge. Storyboards were drawn up in which the two realities would start to merge as Mario faced off against Bowser on the iconic structure. Mario eventually won after dropping a Bob-Omb down Koopa’s throat then kicking him into the river before he exploded. The scene would never be filmed. The film’s producers were tired of spending money on the production. Instead, Koopa was blasted with the Super Scope guns and reduced to a primordial sludge.

I know nothing of the mario games lore or story, if any even exist. But it takes a special kind of creative drive to sit down to adopt them to the big screen and end up with.. this .
Why dinosaurs?
Why setting it in grimy urban decay sets ?
Why a stereotypical mafioso character as a semi villain ?
Why mojo nixon ?
why John Leguizamo ?
Why spend so much screen time of this allegedly kid movie on sexy dance with an aggressive obese lady ?
The fungus, oh god why so much Fungus . also the fungus is lance henriksen ?!
