Obviously it's a bit early for a definitive answer, but in all the preview videos I've seen the grinding seems kinda slow. They put this huge emphasis on, "GOTTA KEEP MOVING! GOTTA STAY LOW!" but then you see the avatar trundling along at a less than break neck speed. So what I'm asking is can you boost or get a speed-up red bull or whatever?

I've got a real question: Can you run faster than the guy in Prototype?

I would think there's a delicate balance that needs to be kept; as the game pretty much requires you to kill poo poo while on the move and if you were going TOO fast it would become that much more difficult to aim and hit stuff while making sure you don't grind off the edge of whatever you're riding, causing you to lose your combo points.

To slow down you simply hold the left trigger to aim whatever weapon you're using and you'll slow so you can hit things. It's not too bad but I will admit that it's a bit difficult at first because I feel now there are times where I've been running and jumping in one direction only to hit a building and be staring at a wall as I try to rotate the camera around to find the next thing to jump on.

Here in the UK it doesn't come out till Friday (Halloween!). Today I pre-ordered the Sunset Overdrive Special Edition White Xbox One bundle, got a deal from Shopto.net where it includes a free preorder for COD Advanced Warfare. I'm not into COD; I haven't played a COD game since Modern Warfare 2, but figured that for free I could't really go wrong. And I know the knew has lasers in it. I like lasers. This has been a surprising decision for me. I'm mainly a PC gamer, and I figured that when I did eventually get a "next gen" console it would be a PS4, since PS4 seemed to be just doing everything better, and most of the multiplatform games run better on PS4. But none of the PS4 exclusives interested me, while Xbox tempted me with Sunset Overdrive and D4. (Big fan of Swery due to Deadly Premonition.)

While I'm pretty sure Ranger Ace started this thread to mock the game but then the game ended up being pretty good so I guess you might as well post your impressions here unless someone starts up another Sunset Overdrive thread. I think most of the poo poo posts are staying the general Xbox One thread.

Played it for 90 minutes so far, still getting the hang of long-term grind combos but it's really starting to open up. I hope they improvise on the mission types because they've felt somewhat samey but it plays well. Feels a lot like Ratchet and Clank, at least where the grind-and-shoot mechanics that popped up from time to time in that franchise are concerned. The humor's been 50/50 for me. Laughed out loud a few times during some missions, sat there stone-faced during others. So far I'd have to say it's a Good Game.

Grapplejack posted:well, is the game good? Yes, I like it a lot. I'm saying that as someone who's taken the policy of almost completely ignoring any coverage of upcoming games and disregarding any hype. I was actually unaware that it was being released today; thought it was due sometime next year. I've spent about four hours playing it, one hour of that at least with multiplayer, and I'm really digging it. It has the flair of Jet Set Radio, the presentation of Borderlands, and the wacky survivalist atmosphere of Dead Rising. This is a game that, while playing it, you actually want to get better at playing it, not just playing it "good enough" to get through to the next bit. If that makes any sense. I also think it's the sharpest looking XBox One game to date. The visual cues in the environment that let you know what things you can bounce on and what things you can grind on are obvious without being obnoxious, and eventually you start traversing the world with the same ease as you would in Titanfall, for example. The game forces you to switch between weapons constantly on account of enemies not dropping ammo for the weapon you're currently using, which stops you from finding the biggest, hardest hit-scan you like and then just mowing everyone down. Multiplayer is a fun affair. You get dumped into a random lobby with seven other players and then you all vote on a mission to play. Within the mission there's an overall goal (kill this guy, defend this place, etc.) and then each player has individual goals to meet, such as x melee kills or get x bear butts - completing these goals awards money for vanity items and Overcharge which unlocks new weapons to use, both in the singleplayer and multiplayer. There are also leaderboard challenges and weekly challenges that award money and Overcharge as well. And given the cost of in-game items, you'll want to try to complete them. I think where goons are going to get their grapes Gilberted is the humor, which, yeah, makes plenty of references to any and all memes made in the past 15 years. It's not in your face, constantly, but you'll definitely be like "Oh he's talking like that stupid Doge meme; har har har." There's also a LOT of coarse language in this game. It's enough to take me out of the immersion, at times. Not that I'm a saint by any measure, but it does reach Samuel L. Jackson levels of "motherfucker." Cursing's fun, but it doesn't really elevate the game in any meaningful way. Another strike against the game is that death really is meaningless. You can be on the final leg of a ten-minute mission, get killed, and then respawn instantly and get right back into it. No loss of money or Overdrive or anything. I'm grateful I don't have to restart the mission, thank God. But even LEGO games deduct a penalty on your currency upon death. And I guess if you're some serious professional gamer then you might take issue with the aiming in this game, in that you need but point your reticle in the general area of the enemy and you'll land hits. But given how fast you move around in this game, constantly changing speed and height, you'll need some sticky aiming to kill anything. It's okay; you're not training for next year's Quake Con or anything. The game has prioritized fun above all else, and it delivers that in character customization, freedom of movement, and presentation. I haven't seen a character I actively dislike yet (a lot of goons bitched about the character on the boxart being the main character, but you don't play as him at all - unless you customize your guy or girl to look like him). Is Sunset Overdive a reason to buy the One? I say it's the best reason yet to buy it. There's a Kinect-less Sunset Overdrive bundle out soon, and I say there'll be no better way to get into the Xbox One. If Sunset Overdrive was multi-platform, I think it'd be enjoying the same adulation Shadow of Mordor is basking in at the moment.

As a counterpoint (and I say this as someone who really enjoyed SoM), I feel like Sunset is a better whole package than Mordor. Mordor has one trick that it does really, really well, but I found the rest of the game surrounding it to be fairly average. Again, the nemesis system is a really innovative, fun thing to play with so it wasn't a huge deal. I feel like Sunset does a much better job of stringing together all of the parts of the package - it really just plays very, very well and it's a ton of fun.

This game does the whole "not your usual brown shooter!" in the most boring, by the numbers way imaginable. It's like they took a focus group and then told them it was opposite day or something, but they just came up with a different flavor of bland as poo poo.

It's like what a game studio would do if they had all the style and flair cut out of their last game and in protest made their next game so intrinsically full of wacky internet memes that it would be 100% impossible to get rid of them.

The wacky humor is generally pretty garbage but it plays like a fun cross between rachet and clank/infamous and a tony hawkish game. At first I thought it could be faster to at least match jet set radio futureish grinding speeds but honestly when you're trying to shoot at the same time you realize it's more or less fine. Cool ability/cosmetic options too, I like how the game doesn't really lock your character into anything at all outside of points spent. Worth the money if you're into the gameplay style i described I think as long as the game is reasonably long.

Well, the 'stacking the gamefly queue full of pre-order titles so you get the new release you want' plan has worked again. Sunset Overdrive has shipped! The little bit of streams I caught have looked promising and pleasantly non-brown.

As one of the guys above said the jokes are hit and miss and a lot of reviews say it gets a little aggressive and potentially even mean later on, but I haven't gotten there just yet. Either way I'm enjoying my playthrough and I especially like that any character can wear anything.

I love that I can give my petite chick character a beard. Sadly there's no fat girl/guy option, I'd love to see an obese character grinding on telephone wires. I'm still in the very beginning, but so far this is one of the few games that drops f bombs in a way that doesn't seem forced or 'edgy'. Maybe it gets old later on, but so far the voice acting and writing comes off as natural and fun.
