In many ways, yes, but I attended a small prep school I could simulatanously be on the football team, student body treasurer, set the school's SAT record, and gently caress my girlfriend of two years...all while driving a minivan and playing Star Wars:CCG

Most definitely I was the nerd. I was still reasonably popular, not sure why. I did play D&D, and I was eagerly awaiting the release of The Empire Strikes Back and listening to Styx, Kansas, and Led Zeppelin.

You know in 30 Rock where Liz Lemon goes to her highschool reunion? She thought she had been bullied for being a nerd but really she was a huge rear end in a top hat? That was probably me.

In my highschool they kind of segregated the "smart" people from the rest of the students. 9th grade it was in the form of "gifted" classes, then my second year they formed the AP program which made it even more separate. I mostly went through the whole 4 years taking the same classes with the same group of ~25 people. It created a really weird insular group where that was most of our entire social network - I barely interacted with or knew any of the other ~350 people in my year. So probably I would have been some variant of "that nerdy kid" if I ever interacted with the non-AP crowd but honestly I think I was right in the middle in terms of normal/nerdy in the context of our group.

Junior Jr. posted:for real? you have to tell me more. There were a couple exceptions like a couple semesters of mandatory PE and intro classes like Algebra 1/Geometry and my first year of Spanish were mixed with the rest of the year, but after that first year it was practically all AP all day. We wouldn't even go to lunch in the cafeteria with the rest of the school, we had special permission to go off campus if we wanted to. It might sound appealing but it was an awful model and even though I got like an entire year's worth of free college credits from the exams I wish I hadn't joined it, or at least mixed in some "normal" classes here and there. It really encouraged a pretty unhealthy "us vs. them" mentality.

Junior Jr. posted:honestly, I feel sorry for you. that school must've treated you badly. To be fair we weren't forced into it, just encouraged to try it out. I think the worst part was effectively limiting our dating pool to the ~6 girls in the class. Things got a little weird romantically as time went on when half the guys had the same dating history. None of those relationships lasted very long, believe it or not, and last I checked only 3 people from that group are married/engaged (to people they met after school) 12+ years down the road.

I was popular, got into trouble a lot and sold weed to half of the school, where 75 % were girls. Good times. Was hoping that life after school will be the same. It is not.

I spent every day after high school either in the library or in the lab I worked at (so I could earn money for computer parts). Played mtg, chess, etc. And played computer games all night when I got home and posted on the forums.

gently caress yeah. My love nerd poo poo was so well known, my debate underlings gave me a nerd poo poo going away basket with dragons and other nerd stuff in it. I was the vice prez by that point. So yeh. I wuz pretty hardcore. I was really into certain roleplay mu*s at that time which is even worse, but I wasn't enough of a fool to let any of my school peeps know about that. I STAYED the gently caress in the closet and never came out as far as that was concerned. Thank christ.
