Ms. Fat Booty has been posted in a couple other threads already so I don’t need to post the video but I’m going to nominate it. Black on both sides is one of my favorite albums of all time, and that’s the obvious pick but I wanted to nominate one of the other songs first. Hip hop is such a great track and the way they play with the rhythm is so cool, Do it Now is such a good party song, but Ms Fat Booty has that incredible Aretha sample and it’s just too good to pass on. So Mos Def - Ms Fat Booty. throwing in the link for u bro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZvjiLbDQq8 Somebody fucked around with this message at 01:33 on Jan 14, 2022 |

Witness (1 Hope) - Roots Manuva (2001) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltP7L16A8Hs - absolutely filthy bassline that was supposedly from Roots trying to recreate the Doctor Who theme - flow that keeps jumping between time signatures with constant rhymes - it would be a reach to call this grime but it's definitely got some shared dub / dancehall influences and Roots was unapologetically British long before grime got international recognition, rapping about pints of bitter and cheese on toast - he might have actually made up the word "cruffiton" for this track as every source for it refers back to the song?? - if it's got a weakness it's that all the best lines are in the lead up to the first chorus but those twenty bars are loving amazing and do not let up: quote:Taskmaster burst the bionic zit-splitter also this shouldn't have any bearing on its inclusion but the video makes me laugh every time

#3, in no specific order Atlanta in the hip hop landscape of 2000-2006 was fun. Outkast, Lil Jon, and Ying Yang Twins had banging but still poppy hits. Most of the lyrics were just about getting hosed up, which everyone can relate to. TI showed up angry and violent and was Atlanta for years, pretty much eclipsing Jeezy and owning the sound until guys Young Thug. He had been pushing darker tracks since the early 2000s, but after getting out of jail and finding out trap was bigger than him he dropped King. The entire album is TI declaring himself the new king of Atlanta, and daring anyone to challenge him on it. He still has that trap underpinning to the beat but he got Just Blaze because he knew he needed a heater to open the album strong. This is peak TI. His life from this point on was living up to this song. TI - King Back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AV4fyId29o

Clipse - Grindin' I had a hard time with this because Clipse is my favorite rap group of all time. I think Pusha T is pretty much impeccable across the board and i could post about 20 songs that he's insanely good on. This doesn't have my favorite lyrics/flow on the album (Young Boy is an unbelievable song especially as the first track on the album. So raw and hosed up.) but Push and Malice are both great on it. The beat, though...it was incredible when it came out and its still hot today. Early Neptunes - they crushed the whole album but this one was special. gently caress now I'm writing this and I want to talk about Cot drat...When the Last Time...Virginia (might be the best lyrics on the album) but I think this one has to be my nomination because of the beat. I love this album so much. Hell Hath No Fury is absolutely sick as well but I feel like Grindin' was like a nuke that got thrown on the radio. So I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong. Hope other people nominate other stuff by Clipse because gently caress they own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArgD6codGc0

Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JZom_gVfuw Just because it's an obvious choice doesn't make it a wrong one at all. This may not have been the biggest single from Ready to Die (that was probably "Big Poppa"), but I think this one holds up the best. Is it an obviously marketable song? Maybe, it's not nearly as heavy as what comes before it on the album - "Things Done Changed," "Machine Gun Funk," and probably one of the most underrated tracks is right before it, "The What." But when the sample starts... The use of the "Juicy Fruit" sample continues to piss off Pete Rock to this day (because he's 99% positive Puffy copied his homework on it and is probably right) but it's setting such a vibe. It's the ray of sunshine after a day full of dark clouds and rain. Lyrically, this is where Biggie gets to spin himself the rags to riches story ("birthdays was the worst days / now we sip champagne when we thirsty") while keeping the edge the rest of the album has but still being incredibly approachable. And, come on. It's Biggie. One of the cornerstones of 1990s hip hop. The evolution of Big Daddy Kane, the predecessor to what Jay-Z would eventually morph into much later. He's in a similar vein to Jimmy Hendrix - an absolute comet flashing by that changes everything but is gone too soon.

harperdc posted:Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy I was too deep into my backpack to appreciate Biggie contemporaneously so all of my appreciation has been posthumously. I don’t remember what big journo outlet did it, but in the last year or so there was this great article about how Juicy is this perfect time capsule/love song to hip hop. I’ll see if I can find it. One of my favorite dumb twitter moments is Juicy related. Had a friend tweet out something like “every Saturday crack attack, mr magic garbage y’all” and then like 2 or 3 months later followed that up with a reply to one of those “gun to your head, what song can you rap word for word” tweets with Juicy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GND7sPNwWko i want to submit RUN-DMC's Rock Box This song is from 1984 but still sounds fresh. The clip has a classic ridiculous white guy intro that would later be copied in a lot of other rap clips. Lots of energy and fun here, and it's probably the first rap song to use rock elements like an electric guitar, but does so in a way that perfectly blends with the rap beat and the lyrics. The actual lyrics are short but really sustained and cohesive, lots of alliteration and rhyme throughout but never reaching for anything. Not a single second of this song sucks and it always makes me feel good immediately

(The best rap song of all time is T.R.O.Y. for reasons already stated. It tells a wonderful, loving story, it's got a legendary producer at his peak, its soulful and lasting etc. It calls to mind warm reflections of the people I love and miss and when art can do that effectively it's very special.) I think this conversation will naturally gravitate toward songs that have had time to breathe and fill out a legacy as classics, which makes me feel loving old since there's like TI and Clipse and poo poo listed here which were foundational to me developing my music taste as a budding retard, so with that in mind I'm going to endorse pretty much all the 90s and 80s suggestions and focus on the 00s-on when thinking about my nomination. Still, I hope to see recognition for Wu-Tang, De La Soul, Snoop, Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, Fugees as well. Hell even Will Smith made perfect party rap for a whole decade, but an argument for Miami as the best ever rap song is very very narrow. So I guess with that in mind I gotta think on the 00s. Bear with me as I work through this decision via text. 50 Cent's Tyson-style reign had its peak with Hate It or Love It which I guess Game will tell you is all his. Scarface's On My Block hits a lot of the same notes as T.R.O.Y. for me but it doesn't have the same depth. Jay Electronica's Exhibit C is so good he could never really follow it up no matter what he did after it. My favorite T.I. song is What You Know because that production is loving powerful. Kanye West hit different tracks out of the park on his first four albums (among them Jesus Walks, Diamonds from Sierra Leone, Good Life, and Street Lights). I have the chorus of Trick Daddy's I'm a Thug stuck in my head regularly. Of course I've got a huge list of songs I'm *not* picking and there's a million more in the conversation that I'll feel dumb for forgetting in like an hour. What I am nominating from the 00s is this classic: UGK ft. Outkast - Intl. Player's Anthem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLNzTZVvoWs Pimp C and Bun B are legends in their own right, but for me Andre 3000 and Big Boi really pull the track to its heights. Outkast's music means a lot to me as Hey Ya was my bridge into the genre and I went backward from there after that. Getting to see them on their halfhearted reunion tour was bittersweet and I won't soon forget it. The beat's crazy. Juicy J gets a credit because it was originally a 3 6 Mafia song that didn't take off or something, so that's cool. Everyone has a good-to incredible verse on this and they manage to tell stories that basically run the gamut of their experience with women. It's touching, funny, and always impressive. Iconic video too. Just a perfect song for driving by yourself or blasting at a function. It's the best rap song of the 2000s. ~~~~~ I guess when it becomes easier to produce and mass distribute music via the internet everyone's gonna try to do it. There's just so much music that I know I probably missed some increedible poo poo, but for the first half of the decade I was pretty dug in to all sorts of stuff from the full spectrum. Freddie Gibbs' Thuggin with Madlib sticks out to me. I hadn't picked something he was involved in for the 00s, I'd probably put up Big Boi and Gucci Mane's Shine Blockas. A$AP and Odd Future are linked in my heart and both had some incredible early stuff with poo poo like Peso and Orange Juice. I didn't expect Tyler to be the one that really evolved out of it but he's really excelled as he got older. Fetty Wap wasn't really a one-hit wonder with Trap Queen but he was a one-album one, though it's probably one of the best albums of the decade. Migos and Young Thug kept Atlanta rising with the cloned Gucci Mane doing his part too I guess. Obviously Kendrick and TDE had some great stuff. I'm particularly mindful of Danny Brown being an incredible spaz for a decade. There's a lot more but I realized I'd never stop so instead I'll get to it. Kanye West ft. Pusha T - Runaway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhEoCOWUtcU For my money My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is the best album of the decade, and this is the best song on it. I posted Never See Me Again recently in another thread and this very much feels like a companion piece to it. Kanye's never been the best rapper (that's not really what you listen to him for, right?) but he comes across as raw and honest here in a way that's both off-putting and endearing. It seems to be honest reflection. It's very easy to get fake deep about this song but I think it's genuinely something that anyone with regrets about their relationships can relate to. Also Pusha T kills on this. If not for Rick Ross spitting the verse of his life on Devil in a New Dress he'd have the best verse on the album. It's the best song of the 2010s and with the rest of MBDTF and 808s & Heartbreak set a new direction not only for himself but arguably for the genre. 2020s are Griselda's bitch doot doot doot doot doot doot rap music rules Somebody fucked around with this message at 02:52 on Jan 15, 2022 |
