syntaxfunction posted:It was such a clusterfuck and it was great. Disable IE and suddenly you can't see file sizes or random other bugs. I can't remember specifics but it was fun times. They didn't do it on accident, they specifically tied IE into the OS to kill off Netscape, the vastly superior browser at the time. Once it had been murdered, Microsoft could safely adhere to the antitrust laws and decouple the browser and the OS and dominate the web market.

Also from what I've read they're doing a gradual rollout of the update to kill it and the 15th is just the first day it's getting pushed, so some of you might get a few extra days or weeks of IE.

But if your IT people haven't figured that out yet they probably won't so it'll be more fun to watch those old apps crash and burn. Oh they figured it out; I'm pretty sure the end users aren't going to be able to!

Gonna be real cool for the guys still at work when they can’t access work orders anymore. I got Edge to act as a faux IE for the time being before I quit, but I never showed anyone else how to do it. None of the other guys are computer savvy lol

My main memories of Explorer were it constantly installing poo poo without my permission or knowledge. Trojans, search bars, spamware, adware, the list goes on and on. It felt more like that browser was pro-scammer than pro-user. I remember when some porn site installed like 50+ porn links into the bookmarks folder without my knowledge, and my mom flipped out and took away my computer privileges for a while. I also hated the uncontrolled ads and pop-ups, and all the other jank it had without ever getting better because Microsoft had a monopoly at that point and didn't have to do poo poo for anyone. I was so happy to find Opera back in the early 00s. Its tabbed browsing blew my mind, and its control of all the poo poo Explorer had no control over was amazing at the time. Rest in Pisssssssss, Explorer. Netscape had so much more charm. Edge isn't all that bad, but I wouldn't give up Vivaldi for it. However, for my needs, Edge is one of the best OS-built-in PDF readers around. It allows for text highlights in multiple colors, adding notes and handwriting, AND it saves it all permanently in the PDF itself, meaning all your additions will show up no matter where else or in what software you open it with later. It was a great help during my master's degree because I could always keep a cloud back-up of all the articles with my notes and open them on my phone or tablet, or send them to my cohort if necessary.

Thought this thread was going to be about Kirk Johnson. Goons were claiming he died around the same time as Lowtax, but at the same time rumors of his death have been circulating since... probably the first time somebody got Goatse'd, honestly. If no evidence of his death exists then we can safely proclaim Goatse to be eternal.

Hate to break it to you, but that's how it is now with Windows 10/11 and Edge, except 1000x worse. MS intentionally made Edge not just a requirement for the OS to function properly, but an integral part of it.

There's two Edge's... Edge HTML (originally shipped with Windows 10) and the newer current Edge which is Chromium based. So why would anyone use Edge Chromium instead of Chromium itself, or just Google Chrome? Personally, I keep Edge HTML around just because it's an alternate browser, while Edge Chromium isn't. I also keep IE11 around just in case! Main browser is Firefox Developer.

I spent a month writing a grant to get the cash to set up a 40-computer learning lab, with Internet access. We got the grant, got the computers, got the Internet access (A fractional T-1 frame relay!) and within a month of letting kids get onto it, every single computer was laboring under the slowdown caused by BonziBuddy. Apparently, the district had not added some of the security software that we had specified, because they thought it was not necessary. Without the software, kids were free to add BonziBuddy (and lots of other malware) which pretty much wrecked the computers until the district relented and gave us the software. Everyone has a learning curve.

Genesplicer posted:(A fractional T-1 frame relay!) I worked in enterprise telecom for a while and as recently as 2015 there were still a bunch of smaller companies using fractional T-1s for internet access. Some of them were set up for VOIP over the same line so if your coworker in the next cube over was on the phone your shared 768kb connection dropped to 744kb and so on. Also these little companies were so cheap that that it required Herculean efforts to get them to upgrade to the full T-1 (a whopping 1.5Mb). Also keep in mind that a T-1 can be like $500 a month or more depending on location.
